A famous rabbi made an eerie prediction in the 18th century that seems to mirror the rising tensions and military build-up between the two Eastern European nations.

Tensions between Russia and Ukraine are heating up, sparking fears of an imminent war — and a prominent rabbi claims it's a sign that the coming of the Messiah is near.

Conflict between the two nations has been brewing for the past seven years, ever since Russia annexed Crimea in the wake of the Ukrainian revolution.

On March 24, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree essentially declaring war with Russia, calling for the "de-occupation and reintegration of the temporarily occupied territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol".

The worrying escalation in military tension has been cited by religious scholars as the fulfilment of an apocalyptic prophecy made in the 1700s.

Rabbi Elijah of Vilna

Rabbi Elijah of Vilna, also known as the Vilna Gaon, was an 18th-century Jewish academic who made many significant contributions to understanding the Messianic process.

While Christians believe Jesus Christ was the Messiah and will return to Earth in the Second Coming, Jews believe the Messiah has yet to visit us and are awaiting his First Coming.

The Vilna Gaon handed down a prophecy to his son that said: "When you hear that the Russians have captured the city of Crimea, you should know that the times of the Messiah have started, that his steps are being heard.

"And when you hear that the Russians have reached the city of Constantinople [Istanbul], you should put on your Shabbat clothes and don't take them off, because it means that the Messiah is about to come any minute

"And when you hear that the Russians have reached the city of Constantinople [Istanbul], you should put on your Shabbat clothes and don't take them off, because it means that the Messiah is about to come any minute."

Seeing as Russia & Turkey are more or less allies at the moment I won't put on my Shabbat clothes just yet.

Apologies to those who know this already, but here are some thoughts of mine as a Jew:

The belief in the Messiah is one of the 13 key attributes of Judaism as clarified by Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon.

The study of when and how the Messiah will be revealed is fascinating, involving both mainstream and obscure texts.

The Vilna Gaon's prediction should not be read in isolation, but in context with other things he described, such as descriptions of the time period of history the Messiah will be revealed, as also mentioned by other Rabbis and scholars....a mix of social conditions, economic conditions, technology, geopolitics and various other religious signs.

There have been in human history, various times when the Messiah is more likely to be revealed, these could be regarded as special "windows of opportunity."

Some of those "windows" which have been in the past, are known about by a wider group of people.
It is possible other windows existed which are known only to a handful of people or to none at all.

It is a subject needing many hours of study.

Until the Messiah is revealed, then the exact timing, the way it happens, and resultant changes in the world, though written about in different Jewish texts, are not provable because they have not yet been verified by global observation and acknowledgement.

* The Daily Star description needs a touch of clarification.

The Messiah in Judaism has two emergences, one of a more military and temporal leader (Messiah from Joseph) and one of a more spiritual and scientific leader (Messiah from King David).
Both these emergences have existed in history in the form of individuals, but neither emergence has yet to be fully revealed in their final form.
The majority of discussions of "The Messiah", and the above prediction by the Vilna Gaon, relate to the Messiah from King David.

Ukraine and Russia have been in a shooting war for years - I have a friend in the US military who has served several tours there. (advisors...) And there was that phone call. They also have a long history of shooting wars caused essentially by Ukraine's access to ports in the Black Sea and Russia's lack. So I think the train has already left the station on this prophecy.

It's been predicted so many times in the past.. Now if "The Messiah" is a codename for some kind of Doomsday Weapon, well, I could believe that!

The Rabbi is on his own trip there...

And by the way Russia is already fighting in Ukraine.
