Scientists Call For Serious Study Of 'Unidentified Aerial Phenomena'

Hasnt this been done already?

What about project Hessladen??
Exactly right and in the '40s too, with the Estimate of the Situation. And the RAND document later:

And the Cometa Report:

We already know what they are.
They are... "Not visionary or fictitious"..

This last kerfuffle has happened because UFOs monitoring our military have caused problems for us again and plausible deniability is being shaken up again. A real generalized AI would see it in a moment.

Wilbur Smith's opinions from the fifties has little or no relevance today, I'm afraid. He had almost no evidence to go on. We have more evidence today, and it seems to point increasingly towards the unreliability of eye-witness testimony. Whenever we have good evidence to examine, like FLIR1, GIMBAL and GOFAST, the explanations have been uncovered by analysis.

Determining the historicity and commonality of the phenomenon across time is important for reasons that are obvious. Disagree about the videos and of course you are dismissing all of the circumstantial evidence and witness testimony over a long period of time. Somehow folks think the genie is going back into the bottle. It ain't. UFOs have been seen visually while recorded on systems simultaneously --latest occurring on Nimitz.

The Hessdalen investigation has been questioned in this paper;
http://www.itacomm.net/ph/rebuttal.pdf
at least some of the detected lights were cars on a private road running though the forest.

I suspect that some of the other lights were simply fire lanterns deliberately released by the students, or other interested parties, as a joke.

Ive got a 60s book on the subject; cant recall title. Carl Sagan was involved.

And what about Hynek???

He was a proper scientist, wasnt he?
I don't know of his involvement with that phenomenon. He started out as a swamp gas skeptic --kind of like Neil deGrasse Tyson, and then later realized they were real and changed his tune somewhat. You can see footage of the change in I Know What I Saw
