various stages along the bar as one empted he would buy another, never saw him
appear drunk or anyone else do the same thing.

Bad habits catch up. Lemmy's health was poor from his 50s onwards or before. The conditions he died of are what you'd expect to see one at a time in a 70 year-old. Ozzy has dementia and Parkinson's disease.

Just being alive isn't really enough.
TBF I've been drinking like a fish since I was 16. Not sure why I'm not dead, let alone being in half decent health. But we are all different.

I was going to say my drinking had led to some seriously bad decisions, but it was also responsible for me being with my wonderful wife of 25 years (till cancer got her) so there again it's swings and roundabouts.

I've never had an issue with booze - in fact after a few awful, pukey hangovers in my 20s I've kind of left it behind apart from a small half-glass of wine that I like to savour, or a thimble of a good port or liqueur, or a half of shandy or occasionally lager/a decent cider.

If I'm asked 'how many units of alcohol do you drink a week?' I truthfully answer about 0.2!

I knew a lovely lady who was a heavy regular, daily drinker of wine - maybe 3/4 bottles a day. She got to about 60 and then developed alcohol-related dementia and died within 6 years. Such a waste.

My substances of choice are nicotine and speech radio/audiobooks.

I haven't touched a cig for 11 years (previous to that I smoked on and off for 22 years with quit gaps of up to 5 years!), then I was an early adopter of vaping, which I am certain saved my health, and since a nasty virus this time last year I am now popping nicotine lozenges and mouth spray. Nicotine is a very useful mild stimulant - it's the delivery method (inhaling burning plant matter) that kills.

As for the audiobooks, I am a lost cause.

This happened to several heavy drinkers I knew in my youth and 20s. I even ended up looking after some in hospitals. As you say, a waste of a life.

Being such a late starter probably saved you.

In all seriousness though, when and where I grew up, no one would bat an eyelid (as long as you didn't cause trouble) if you were 11 or 12 - same with smoking which you could do in pubs back then.

Whether it's still the same over there I don't know, but I often wonder how many of us from that era/area became alcoholics.
