For most foreigners, in speaking of China, the first city comes to their brain must be Beijing. As the capital city of China, Beijing is so time-honoured. Since the mid-term of Yuan, Beijing has acted to be the capital, except for a short break at the beginning of the 20th century. For this reason, I would like to share a few ghost stories happened in this city.
A Woman Standing out of the Window
I heard this story from a senior journalist 10 years ago. A young man, he is a friend of this journalist, comes to Beijing to look for employment. Because renting an apartment in the central area is too costly, the young man decided to live in the outskirt of this city. The room he rents is located in a traditional house, a block which surrounded by four houses.
At first, everything seems OK, this young man goes out to seek jobs in the morning and goes home at night. One day, this young man gets up to go to the washroom in the midnight. However, he finds that a woman is watching him from the window. This young man is frightened that time, but he calms down quickly.
Since then, the young usually watched the same thing in the midnight. After a week, he cannot repress his fear anymore and calls his mother for help. Perhaps you would ask me, why this young man asks for help from his mum. In fact, his mother is a soothsayer and has some incredible skills.
It is said that his mother had saved a mink when she was young. Soon later, his mother often dreamt that this mink wanted to repay this and wished to impart some supernatural abilities to her. At first, his mother refused steadfastly. However, after declining the request of that mink, she could not stop eating the earth. Even though she was full by the earth, she could not stop this. At this moment, she saw the mink again and agreed to study what the mink wanted to teach. In so doing, she has mastered some supernatural skills.
Returning to the story of the young, the young man knows his mother's ability and calls for help. Over the telephone, this man describes what happened. His mother tells him that he should insert some incenses to the crack between the door and its frame.
Next day, his mother calls the young man. Firstly, his mother describes the layout of the house correctly. The young man is so surprised that his mother's description is as the same as the house he is living in. Next, his mother tells the young man what happens these days. The female who was watching the young man is a ghost, and she was a member of a noble family before. In his mother's words, the female does not want to hurt or scare this young in fact but wants to see an old bench in this room. Even though his mother does not know the emotional link between the female and the bench, she suggests her son discards this bench as soon as possible.
This young feels a sense of relief. He picks up the bench and throws it into a garbage truck. However, afterwards, this young man finds the landlord's expression is subtle, perhaps the landlord is aware of what happened. Although he sees that the young man wants to throw the bench out, he does not stop him but keeps quiet. This reaction seems very abnormal.
