Spills & Sundry Messes

This overturned semi-truck on Interstate 40 in Oklahoma spilled its load all over an exit ramp. The reporter in the copter declined to answer a studio question concerning the nature of the spilled items. This Oklahoma blog site claims the spill consisted of dildos and (sex) lubricants. Wrecked semi shoots load of dildos and lube all over I-40…

Yesterday morning, a roll-over crash involving a semi-tractor trailer and a box truck occurred on I-40 near Mustang on the western fringes of the Oklahoma City metro.

The accident prompted the rubberneckers at KWTV News 9 to apparently scramble Patricia’s Sky News 9 for a live shot, and boy did chopper pilot Jim Gardner deliver.

After he gave a brief and vague update of the scene, intrigued morning anchor Lacey Lowery asked what cargo the truck was carrying and, specifically “what’s all over the road?” After an awkward pause, a somewhat bashful Jim Gardner stuttered his way around the question and the cameraman zoomed in. ...

We haven’t received official confirmation of what cargo the truck was carrying, but A) That sure looks like a bunch of vibrator boxes and tubes of lube scatter over the highway, and B) The accident did occur near a major adult-product-focused distribution hub near I-40 and Morgan Rd., so if your vibrator of the month shipment is delayed, that may explain why. ...

A truck spilled coffee creamer all over a highway in Pennsylvania.
Spilled coffee creamer causes temporary road closure in Philipsburg, officials say

Officials with Hope Fire Company in Centre County say a tractor-trailer hauling coffee creamer caused the temporary closure of Route 322 in Philipsburg Monday afternoon.

Authorities say some of the creamer spilled onto the roadway while the truck was stopped at a red light, and subsequent traffic caused the liquid to be spread across an approximate 1-mile stretch of the road.

Fire officials say Route 322 was closed for nearly an hour while crews dumped absorbent material on the roadway to help cleanup the spilled creamer.

Authorities say the road may remain slippery, due to the absorbent material, and motorists are advised to reduce speeds and use caution ...

Being American do they mean chocolate?

Being American do they mean chocolate?

"Candy" is not uniquely synonymous with "chocolate" in American English.

Anyway ... The crash scene photos I've seen don't clearly show the spilled cargo.

What is the accepted etymology of that word, in American English? Is it actually a loan word from Hindi/Urdu?

As far as I know the noun's origin is one and the same, but its usage varies (between British and American English). The noun pre-dates colonization of the Americas:

candy (n.)

late 13c., "crystallized sugar," from Old French çucre candi "sugar candy," ultimately from Arabic qandi, from Persian qand"cane sugar," probably from Sanskrit khanda "piece (of sugar)," perhaps from Dravidian (compare Tamil kantu "candy," kattu"to harden, condense").
https://www.etymonline.com/word/candy

The verb dates back to the early 16th century.

Candy was a luxury product that wasn't widely present in North America until the 18th century, and then primarily as an imported digestive aid or medicine (a la Ricola) rather than a confectionary treat. It was in the 19th century that commercial candy manufacturing and marketing really took off. I suspect the diversity of cultures and recipes mixed into the American scene had a lot to do with the widening scope of what was called "candy."

The broadening of the American English usage to generally cover both modern British English's "sweets" and "candy" had occurred no later than the late 19th century. I don't know how far back the sweets / candy differentiation extends in British usage.

In modern American usage "candy" connotes pretty much anything that's produced from and / or heavily laden with sugar - hard candies, boxed chocolates, candy bars, jelly beans, lollipops, gum drops, etc., etc., etc. "Sweets" is used to connote a more general category of sugary food items including baked goods, pastries, and ice cream. At least in some regions "sweets" can be taken to include sugary soft drinks and chewing gum.

A fire department spokesperson told The Telegraph that the majority of fish have remained inside what's left of the structure, although they are presumed dead.
He said authorities still did not know what caused the incident.

The crash was so large it registered on seismometer used to record earthquake and volcano tremors.

Thousands evacuated before ‘controlled release’ of toxic chemicals from massive train derailment

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced the mandatory evacuation of thousands of residents of East Palestine, a small town of about 4,700 on the border of Ohio and Pennsylvania.

The emergency started on Friday night, when a massive train derailment sparked an ongoing fire just west of the state line.

The train was carrying 100 cars, about 50 of which were derailed in the accident. Twenty of the cars were transporting hazardous material.
First responders are now worried that the fire will spread to rail cars carrying vinyl chloride. If those cars catch fire, it could cause an explosion propelling shrapnel and toxic fumes as far as a mile away.

‘They are describing the explosion as “potentially catastrophic,”‘ DeWine said.

The chemicals onboard the train have the potential to cause skin burns and lung damage to residents, DeWine said. Their fumes are also known to cause liver and other cancers.

‘We’re gonna place a small charge, it’s gonna create hole about two and a half to three inches in the tank car,’ Scott Deutsch, a representative of Norfolk Southern Railway said alongside DeWine. The chemicals will then flow from the car into a ditch dug by emergency workers. They will then be ignited by flares placed on the sides of the ditch.

‘We’re doing this so that we can control this tank car that we have concerns with,’ Deutsch said. ‘This allows us to control that operation and not have the car react and do it itself.’

‘If we don’t do that, the car could continue to polymerize, and the entire car will break apart.’

Arizona nitric acid spill caused by deadly rollover leads to 'extensive closure' of freeway, commutes affected

An update at 8:14 p.m. MST announced the driver of the commercial vehicle was dead. The driver's identity was not shared.

Work on the controversial project was stopped for several hours on Saturday after dog walkers watched on in horror as the bizarre substance bubbled up at Ruislip RFC on Saturday.

HS2 workers moved to seal off the area after the hole opened up which was “most likely caused” by one of the tunnelling machines passing through a small pre-existing borehole.

Despite the slurry pool being cleared away, locals raised concerns as to what could happen when digging passes under populated areas.

At the end of last year, locals and officials were bewildered when Whitehaven Harbour in Cumbria took on the tertiary hue.

The waterway - believed to be “the gateway to the lakes” - was previously used for importing fish, sugar and chemicals for a detergent factory.

Tests were carried out by the Environment Agency when the water first changed colour at the end of last year. It was concluded there was no evidence of sewage, but “increased metals in the water” were identified.
