Spills & Sundry Messes

An Oregon highway got "slimed" on Thursday when a truck hauling eels overturned and turned the coastal road into a gooey mess.

Oregon State Police on Thursday posted a photo on Twitter that showed damaged cars covered by the slimey eels. The agency also posed the question: "What to tell the £drycleaner?"

Meanwhile, the Depoe Bay Fire Department posted a video of workers using a bulldozer to clear the eels from Highway 101. ...

Lorry engulfed by fire on A2 London bound near Bluewater

Motorists face hours of delays after a lorry carrying chocolate was engulfed by flames on the A2 at Bluewater, Kent.
Three of the four London-bound lanes have been closed after the lorry and its cargo was destroyed earlier.
The vehicle is still smoking and emergency services remain at the scene.

A crash between the junctions for Gravesend west and Gravesend central is also adding to the congestion. Normal traffic conditions are not expected until around 11:00 BST.
...

Firefighters are in the process of removing what is left of the cargo, believed to be a consignment of chocolate bars, so that the vehicle can be moved.

NO USE IN CRYING: SPILLED MILK TURNS INDIANA CREEK WHITE

Authorities say an accidental milk spill at a food processing business ended up turning a central Indiana creek white.

The Kokomo Tribune reports the change in the hue of Cicero Creek in Tipton was noticed on Tuesday and investigators determined that no more than 300 gallons (1,100 liters) of milk spilled from the Park 100 Foods plant.

State environmental officials indicate the spill wasn't dangerous.

Crews used hay bales to help contain the milk and a cleanup company removed about 14,000 gallons (53,000 liters) of a water and milk mixture from the creek.

Tipton County Emergency Management Director Chuck Bell says the creek was back to its normal color on Wednesday.

Swedish meatballs are always a welcome sight on the dinner table, but less so when 20 tonnes of them block the road in front of you.

This is the spectacle that faced unwary drivers on 15 November along the Skara-Lundsbrunn road in southwest Sweden, when icy evening conditions meant that the trailer of a lorry skidded into a ditch, taking the meatball mountain with it, Skara Lans Tidning reports.

The lorry itself remained on the road, but all the meatballs needed to be first offloaded onto the carriageway before the trailer could be hauled out of the ditch.

"The trailer was heavier than the lorry itself, and it is very slippery out there," police officer Tommy Emriksson told Swedish TV.

No one was injured in the accident, and social media users have viewed the incident with humour.

Middlewich canal collapse leaves up to 20 boats stranded

A section of the Shropshire Union Canal has collapsed, causing water to drain into the River Wheelock and leaving up to 20 boats stranded.

The collapse is affecting part of the canal which leads to an aqueduct over the river near Nantwich Road in Middlewich, Cheshire.

The canal and towpath have been closed for repair work and to allow the cause of the breach to be investigated.

The Canal and River Trust said it would offer help to the owners of the boats.
etc

Luckily the canal water drained into a nearby river rather than onto the main road a hundred yards or so along. That would've been a catastrophe!

We had a stroll along there today in the snow and took some pictures. The canal bed is full of old bikes and shopping trolleys, as you'd expect, and there were Waterways guys in waders walking along rescuing fish. If I still had young children I'd've dragged them over there to see it.

Edit - oh yeah, forgot to mention that a handgun was found in the mud!

Here's the lock, looking a bit sorry for itself. Not as sorry as that fish though.

Sometimes the mess is made by the stuff intended for cleaning up messes ...

Chinese village beset by giant mass of soap suds
A Chinese village was left with a giant mass of soap suds when a person cleaning plastic bottles let too much soap go down a drain.

Video filmed this week at a village in the Nanning City area of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region shows villagers examining the giant mass of soap suds.

Locals said a villager was cleaning some plastic bottles and allowed a large amount of soap to go down the drain.

The soap started to bubble when rain fell into the drainage area and stirred up the soapy water.

Having had something to do with locks in the past, I am trying to work out how leaving one of the gates open could cause this.

INT21

Either [1] the top gate would have to be closed but the paddles left open. If the bottom gate was then left open it would drain the entire length of the canal from that lock to the next one 'upstream', but fairly slowly, leading to overflow effects downstream & grounded boats upstream, or [2] the top gate was left open & the bottom gate closed but with the paddles left open with a similar effect.

It'd have to be deliberate or stupidity in opening paddles after you've left a lock as you can't get through a lock without closing the gates & paddles. I'm surprised nobody was around to notice before disaster struck.

I agree. it doesn't make sense for this to happen accidentally. Particularly as the water rushing down the spilways should have drawn attention if nothing else did.

A sizable choco-mess in Germany ... The company boss was relieved this accident didn't happen closer to Xmas. His name? Markus Luckey ...

Factory mishap paves street with chocolate in Germany
A street in a western German town got a repaving worthy of fictional candy maker Willy Wonka when a ton of chocolate flowed out of a factory and solidified.

[A] ... “small technical defect” involving a storage tank caused the sweet and sticky spill from the DreiMeister chocolate factory in Westoennen.

After hitting the chilly pavement, the milk chocolate quickly hardened. About 25 firefighters got the job of prying the coating off with shovels and using hot water and torches to remove remaining bits from cracks and holes.

Company boss Markus Luckey told the Anzeiger the factory would be back in action on Wednesday. Luckey said if the spill had happened closer to Christmas, “that would have been a catastrophe.”
