Overturned Van Spills 700 Live Rodents

Overturned Van Spills 700 Live Rodents

Feb 7, 2004 7:15 am US/Pacific

PEARISBURG, Va. (AP) A cargo van filled with cages carrying more than 700 gerbils, rats, mice and other rodents overturned Thursday, sending the animals scurrying onto a highway and sparking a bizarre large-scale rescue of the small animals.

The accident occurred when the van, driven by Thomas Marcinko of Zanesville, Ohio, hit an icy patch of U.S. 460 and ran off the left side of the road, hit a guardrail, overturned and slid onto the shoulder.

The animals, being transported in plastic cages, made a break for freedom.

"We caught probably 20 or 25 outside the vehicle. We caught another 25 inside the vehicle," said Bill Davis, one of eight members of the Giles County Lifesaving Squad who responded to a call for help. "Then we realized they were everywhere."

Marcinko walked away from the accident, and once he was checked out, the search for the critters was on.

"As cold as it is outside, we couldn't just leave them," Davis said. "I just started throwing them in back of the ambulance."

Monkey Waste Spills On Zoo Interchange

Waste Presents No Health Risk

POSTED: 12:16 pm CDT May 4, 2004
UPDATED: 5:39 pm CDT May 4, 2004

MILWAUKEE -- There was some monkey manure mayhem Tuesday on Milwaukee's Zoo Interchange.

A county truck carrying a load of monkey waste spilled across three lanes of traffic in the Zoo Interchange at about 10:45 a.m.

It closed both eastbound Interstate 94 and southbound Highway 45/I-894, but the lanes were reopened by 2:30 p.m.

The spill occurred because of a faulty latch on the county truck that was transporting the waste, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department.

The truck left the scene by 12:15 p.m. The vehicle can carry up to 2,000 gallons, but it's not known how much waste it was hauling.

An environmental specialist was called to supervise the cleanup.

Milwaukee County Zoo spokeswoman Jennifer Diliberti said the waste and algae was dredged from a moat at Macaque Island.

They dredge it twice a year and send it to a landfill in Franklin.

"I think it's comparable to any sort of sewage," she said. "One of the zookeepers said from a scale of one to 10, the smell's a nine," Diliberti said.

Diliberti said the waste doesn't pose a health risk and can simply be washed off the interstate.

The material had been "aged" at the zoo for 48 hours before being loaded into a Milwaukee County Parks Department truck for removal, she said.

That destroys any virus that might be in the material, she said.

A bloody mess

Flood of Blood on Highway

Wed Jun 9, 9:20 AM ET

BERLIN (Reuters) - A German motorway was flooded with 34,000 liters (9,000 U.S. gallons) of pig's blood on Wednesday after an accident that caused a 20 km (12 mile) tailback, police said.

A Dutch tanker spilled its bloody contents after colliding with a truck next to a slip road, police in the central town of Rotenburg said. Heavy rain obstructed the clean-up of the blood, which was on its way for disposal in Hamburg.

Pig blood spill: Traffic nightmare

Wednesday, June 9, 2004 Posted: 1125 GMT (1925 HKT)

BREMEN, Germany (AP) -- A truck carrying 9,000 gallons of pigs' blood was rear-ended and spilled its entire cargo on the German autobahn Wednesday, forcing the highway to close for several hours.

The truck hauling the waste blood from the Netherlands for disposal was pulling onto the autobahn near Sittensen at about 4:15 a.m. from a rest stop when it was rear-ended by another truck, police spokesman Klaus-Dieter Kroll said.

The entire load of pigs' blood formed a large slick that caused another truck to crash, Kroll said. The highway was closed, creating traffic jams 13 miles long on both sides.

The driver of the truck that crashed into the vehicle hauling the blood suffered minor injuries. Damage is estimated at 1,000, Kroll said.

Nine Million Angry Bees

Truck hauling bees crashes in Montana
Dumps honey, sending bees on rampage

BOZEMAN, Montana (AP) -- A tractor-trailer overturned on a curve on a highway, spilling its load of hundreds of bee hives and unleashing some nine million angry honey bees.

The bees buzzed furiously as driver Lane Miller, his arm scraped to the bone, struggled to flee his rig after it overturned Monday in Bear Trap Canyon west of Bozeman. The truck slid across the highway before coming to a stop between guardrails.

"I had to kick the windshield out of the front of the cab and the bees were on me from that moment," said Miller, 41. "I've never felt so much fear in my life."

Miller walked away from the crash, and two people picked him up and took him to the hospital. Miller underwent surgery on his arm and suffered bruises and about 20 stings.

The state road was closed for 14 hours as crews and beekeepers cleaned up the 512 hives Miller was hauling from Idaho to North Dakota.

In spite of bee suits and extra clothing, beekeeper Gary Clark said he counted about 60 stings of his own.

"Everybody had literally thousands of bees on them, in their hats and on their suits," Clark said. "When we pulled the boxes out, big globs of them would fall on us."

Firefighters directing traffic also suffered stings.

"The bees were so agitated you could barely see the beekeepers or the wreckage itself, just because of the cloud of bees that were swarming," said fire chief Shawn Christiansen.

It wasn't until 3 a.m. Tuesday that a tow truck got in to haul out the tractor-trailer, leaving behind pools of honey from the overturned hives.

State Transportation Department employees dropped sand on the road to soak up the sticky mess.

Crash leaves 1,000 birds in road

Police were forced to close a busy dual carriageway after up to 1,000 chickens were scattered across the road.

The birds escaped from a lorry when it was involved in a collision with four other vehicles on to the A420 just outside Oxford at 0950 BST on Friday.

RSPCA officers helped to catch the birds, enabling police to deal with the crash in which one person was seriously hurt and three received minor injuries.

Police estimate that between 500 and 1,000 chickens escaped onto the road.

The Game Fair is on and we are going to ask if there are any wagons or nets that we can use to get the chickens together
Thames Valley Police spokesman

Two lorries and three cars were involved in the accident which closed the road in both directions between the Botley Interchange and Cumnor.

It intensified traffic problems in the area as thousands of people made their way to the CLA Game Fair at Blenheim Palace.

A Thames Valley Police spokesman said the escaped birds "are all over the carriageway."

"The game fair is on and we are going to ask if there are any wagons or nets that we can use to get the chickens together."

He said that although it was a priority to deal with the people injured in the accident, officers would also be helping round up the wayward flock.

Wasp attack spreads German traffic jam
Tue August 17, 2004 09:49 AM ET

BERLIN (Reuters) - A German truck driver lost control of his vehicle while trying to swat a wasp and spilled his 15-tonne load of jam jars on the motorway.

"He was trying so hard to kill the wasp that he smashed the truck against the barrier," a spokesman for the motorway police in the western town of Greven said on Tuesday.

"That's when he really started attracting wasps. There was jam all over the motorway."

Police had to close the A1 motorway for two hours while they cleaned up the mess, causing a long traffic jam.

15t of eggs hits German highway
From correspondents in Berlin
19aug04

A GERMAN autobahn was closed but for one lane for hours today after a truck crash scattered 15 tons of eggs in slimy mess across it.

The truck swerved to avoid a metal object on the road, hit a barrier and overturned near Hanover at about 1am, police said.
The 43-year-old driver was injured and taken to a hospital, but was expected to be released later in the day.

Two of the three southbound lanes were shut down as crews cleaned up the mess into the afternoon. Police estimated the total damage at 100,000 euros (about 3,000).

Well in some ways this and the above annswer the age old question: It appears the eggs came first:

Dead chickens foul drive on Highway 14

Wednesday, September 1, 2004
By JOHN BRANTON, Columbian staff writer

Motorists were squawking Tuesday after a load of dead chickens flew off a pickup on state Highway 14 east of Pearson Field.

"It was absolutely awful," said Jennifer Watkins, a Columbian copy editor who drove through the chickens on her way to work. "I saw feathers flying and chicken parts and whole chickens. I just saw blood, blood, blood. I came in shaking."

About 11:15 a.m., said Washington State Patrol Trooper Garvin March, an older Chevrolet pickup was westbound near the Southeast Evergreen Boulevard exit when an estimated 30 chickens fell from its bed.

The pickup didn't stop, but a witness noted its license number for police.

With the chicken carcasses littering the highway, troopers performed a "rolling slowdown" to the east, turning on their flashers and slowing westbound traffic.

Meanwhile, workers from the state Department of Transportation cleaned up the mess, a process that took about 20 minutes, March said.

Troopers spoke to the truck's registered owner and learned that an accident at a chicken farm had claimed the birds' lives. It wasn't known Tuesday where the farm was, when the birds died or exactly what happened, March said.

Trooper Barry Ching was trying to contact the pickup's driver, but hadn't done so by Tuesday evening.

The driver may not have been aware that the chickens were spilled. Nevertheless, it's possible he could be ticketed for failing to secure his load, March said.

There are number of chicken farms in Clark County, and a major processing plant in Kelso.

March said he's witnessed far worse accidents involving chickens.

About 15 years ago, he said, a tractor-trailer rig overturned on Northeast 10th Avenue (state Highway 502) near Northeast 199th Street, northeast of the Clark County Fairgrounds.

"We had hundreds of dead, dying and panicked chickens all over the highway," March said.

Dutchman escapes after manure shock
Tue September 07, 2004 01:10 PM ET

THE HAGUE (Reuters) - A Dutch driver was covered in hundreds of litres of manure when a tank burst on a lorry carrying fertiliser, police say.

"It was a nice night ... so he probably opened his window when he stopped at a traffic light, and then -- (it) happened," said Dana Kragten, spokeswoman for police in rural Drenthe province, on Tuesday. "The tank had a small window which burst, probably due to pressure ... The man said he had no time to back away his car or close his window."

Police said the man, whose car was sprayed with an estimated 1,700 litres (370 gallons) of liquid manure, escaped injury though his car had to be towed away.

Massive tomato sauce spill

Story

A massive tomato sauce spill brought northbound traffic to a halt on Interstate 95 following a truck accident in eastern Connecticut Friday night.

It was one of the more unusual accidents to beset the traffic-choked and accident-prone highway that connects major U.S. cities in the populous Northeast corridor.

Carlos Nieves, 38, of the Bronx, N.Y., traveling northbound, was transporting about 21,000 pounds of tomato sauce. He struck another truck as he changed lanes, state police say.

He continued in the breakdown lane, went over a guardrail along the right shoulder and rolled over an embankment. The truck rested upside down.

Nieves and his son, a passenger, were treated for minor injuries at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London, state police.

I-95 northbound at exit 72 was to be closed into early Saturday morning as workers removed the tomato sauce.

Load of Pig Guts Spills Across Ark. Road

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) -- A load of pig entrails sloshed out of a truck hauling the guts to a dog food plant, leaving the slop across a busy Little Rock intersection.

The Monday accident occurred when a tractor-trailer driven by Billy Day, 55, made a quick stop and about 1,000 pounds of the innards gushed past a tarp that covered the trailer.

Fire officials say the slaughterhouse helped with the cleanup, and fire crews used hoses and bleach to wash away the remainder.

The 11:20 a.m. accident tied up the intersection of University Avenue and Col. Glenn Road in the south-central part of the city.

Police said Day was ticketed for having an unsecured load. Officials said they didn't know the name of the slaughterhouse.

One sweet road closure

GROVELAND, N.Y. - Rocky road was the flavor of the day after a tanker truck crashed and spilled 45,000 pounds of liquid chocolate on an upstate highway.

State Police said no one was seriously injured in the mishap, which occurred shortly after 5 p.m. yesterday on Interstate 390 in the Finger Lakes region.

The syrup, from the M&M Mars Co. in Elizabethtown, Pa., oozed along the highway, covered a bridge and a car on another road below - and then hardened. "It smelled like a Hershey bar," Groveland Fire Chief Lloyd Butler said. "There was a lot of chocolate, but no peanuts."

A road grader was used to scrape it off, and the desserted ... er, deserted ... highway was closed for five hours.

Truck driver Bert Nestlrode, 46, of Ephrata, Pa., told authorities the accident occurred after he swerved to avoid a deer, the truck rolled over and the tanker split. Nestlrode was treated for cuts and bruises. No tickets were issued. Groveland is 36 miles southwest of Rochester.

Truck Drops Modular Home on Vt. Interstate

Nov 23, 5:46 PM (ET)

ROCKINGHAM, Vt. (AP) - A one-story modular home skidded along the middle of Interstate 91, blocking traffic and leaving a trail of plywood splinters and styrofoam scraps in its dust.

The home, on its way north to a foundation in Lempster, N.H., was strapped to a Kenworth flatbed before dislodging at around 2 p.m. Monday near Exit 5, according to Vermont State Police.

"No one was hurt, fortunately. And we're still investigating the cause of the accident," Cpl. David Gerard said as he watched a crane and bucket loader push and lift the damaged home off the highway and onto a new flatbed.

Gerard said the driver of the Kenworth, Michael Luker, 46, told officers that he was traveling at 55 miles per hour when he felt a "wobbly herky-jerky pull" right before passing the exit ramp.

Once the home became detached, Gerard said its momentum sent it spinning approximately 500 feet forward on the highway, scraping violently against a west side guard rail as it crossed a Route 5 overpass. It trailed Luker as he pulled his tractor onto the shoulder of the road.

Gerard said the only cars on the road at the time were two escort vehicles contracted to monitor the oversize load in transport. The highway was closed for about three hours. Northbound traffic on I-91 was directed along a detour route around Exit 5 until the accident was cleared.

The home was the product of Premier Homes and was en route from Muncy, Pa.

Swarm of bees attacks rescuers at crash

November 24, 2004 - 6:52AM

Emergency crews suffered multiple bee stings when they were attacked by a swarm of bees at the scene of a fatal honey truck accident on the Golden Highway near Dubbo.

A 66-year-old Dubbo man died when his truck, laden with beehives and wax, crashed into the back of a semi-trailer near Dubbo at 7pm (AEDT) yesterday, a NSW police spokesman said.

The driver of the semi trailer loader, a 39-year-old Singleton man, escaped injury.

But police and emergency service workers suffered multiple bee stings from a large swarm of bees which escaped from the damaged hives.

Local beekeepers were brought in to remove the beehives and bees which blocked the highway for more than three hours.

The roadway remained extremely slippery from spilt honey and wax.

Police inquiries were continuing.

Meanwhile, a woman has been charged after an elderly pedestrian was knocked down and killed in central west NSW, police said today.

A 74-year-old woman was hit by a Ford Fairmont sedan as she crossed Lambert Street, Bathurst, at 2.30pm (AEDT) yesterday, a NSW police spokesman said.

An off-duty police officer tried to resuscitate the Bathurst woman but she died in hospital a short time later.

The driver, a 38-year-old woman also from Bathurst, was arrested at the scene and taken to Bathurst Police Station where she was questioned by police.

She was charged with driving on a cancelled licence and registering a mid-range blood-alcohol reading.

She was granted bail and is due to appear in Bathurst Local Court on December 13.

Millions of Bees Spilled on Vegas Freeway

Dec 16, 9:31 AM (ET)

LAS VEGAS (AP) - A truck carrying 12 million honeybees hit a wall on a highway ramp, dumping its load across the pavement shortly before the evening rush hour.

The truck was carrying 480 bee colonies, each with 25,000 insects, to California to pollinate the state's almond crop when it struck the wall Wednesday afternoon.

The collision spilled the bees and gallons of honey onto the highway and forced troopers to close the southbound ramp between Interstate 15 and U.S. Highway 95 for more than four hours.

State police believe the driver lost control on the curving ramp.

Authorities summoned beekeepers to help but decided capturing the bees alive would take too much time and money. Firefighters doused the insects with water to kill them.

"We're talking millions of bees," said Don Grogan, owner of Sedona Honey Co. in Las Vegas, who was helping with the cleanup. "And tomorrow they'll all be dead. ... It breaks my heart."

Truck spills ammonium nitrate in St. Charles County
By Susan Weich
Of the Post-Dispatch
01/06/2005

A truck carrying 12,000 pounds of volatile ammonium nitrate overturned on Highway DD near the August A. Busch Conservation Area in St. Charles County at 7:22 a.m. Thursday, spilling about half its load.

Fire crews and the St. Charles County Bomb Squad worked to clean up the chemical, which is the same substance used to blow up the Oklahoma City federal building.

Missouri Highway Patrol Trooper Julie Scerine said at 11 a.m. that the area was safe, that the chemical requires another agent to make it activate. She added that the cold weather had helped with the cleanup because the temperatures were causing the gel-like liquid to solidify.

"It's containing it to a smaller area and it's not spreading through the ground and into the ditch," she said.

The driver, who works for Dina Noble, had been heading south on Highway DD about three-fourths of a mile south of Diehr Road when he drifted off the side of the road, overcorrected his truck and rolled over. He suffered a minor head wound in the accident but refused medical treatment. Scerine said.

One resident, who lives about 100 yards from the accident, was evacuated to a nearby residence.

The highway continues to be closed for about one mile on either side of the accident.

Human Waste Tanker Crash Shuts Down Stretch Of U.S. 1

POSTED: 7:29 am EST February 1, 2005
UPDATED: 5:45 pm EST February 1, 2005

MIAMI -- U.S. 1 was shut down all day Tuesday following a violent crash between a tanker carrying 6,000 gallons of human waste and a car on the 18-mile stretch leading into the Florida Keys.

The roadway was shut down through the evening rush hour. The tanker and car hit head-on, sending both vehicles into the shallow water along the road at mile marker 113. The tanker was resting on a 36-inch pipe that carries fresh water to Keys residents. The pipe was not ruptured, but workers were on the scene in case anything went wrong.

A passenger in the car was trapped underwater briefly. That person was airlifted to the hospital but is expected to recover.

The tanker driver was taken to the hospital by an ambulance. He later returned to the scene, dressed in a hospital gown and puffing on a cigarette, to answer investigators' questions.

Drivers were advised to use Card Sound Road as an alternate. Tolls were lifted on the roadway, but there were also reports on that road of slow traffic due to a crash on the Miami-Dade County side of the road.

Other traffic headaches were also expected in the Keys Tuesday, thanks to a commercial being filmed on the Seven Mile Bridge just south of Marathon. It was expected the shoot would cause periodic traffic stops.

2,184 cases of beer on the road ...
Thursday, May 12, 2005
Canadian Press

Rush-hour traffic on Canada's busiest highway was snarled yesterday morning after a tractor trailer hauling beer collided with a small car and flipped on its side.

The entire load of beer was spilled, creating a "sea of beer," police said.

The accident, at about 6:30 a.m., brought traffic to a standstill in the eastbound express lanes of Highway 401, northwest of downtown Toronto.

"The good news is the young lady that was in the Honda Civic is not seriously injured -- she's in quite good condition considering the damage to her car," OPP Sergeant Cam Wooley said.

"The bad news is traffic is not good -- this is the busiest stretch of highway in North America."

Police say the driver of the Civic swerved from her lane into the tractor-trailer, which slammed into the cement guardrails and flipped, spilling its load of 2,184 cases of beer.

Bulldozers were called in to clean up the mess, and the task was completed by early afternoon.

Police later charged the 19-year-old woman of Mississauga with careless driving.

Motorcyclists blow cool £10,500 in M3 spill

Richard Jinman
Friday June 17, 2005
The Guardian

One motorist said it was like driving into a cloud of money. But for the two unlucky motorcyclists who lost £10,500 in cash when their rucksack burst open on a motorway, there was no silver lining.

Drivers on the busy stretch of the M3 near Winchester could scarcely believe it when £20 notes began blowing out of a rucksack being carried by the bike's pillion passenger. Several motorists stopped on the hard shoulder to help gather them, but strong winds quickly blew the notes across both carriageways.

The distraught motorcyclists and several drivers tried frantically to collect the cash. But when a count was done only £500 of the £11,000 had been recovered.

Judy Mizen, who was driving in a car behind the motorbike with her husband when the bag burst open at about 7.30pm on Tuesday night, said: "It started off as a few notes, but the bag quickly started spewing huge chunks of money. At first we thought it was just paper, but then I said, 'Oh my God, it's money!' It was like we had hit a wall of money."

Things only got worse for the motorcyclists, who were from the Isle of Wight. Realising they were unlikely to recover any more cash they continued on their way, but their Kawasaki broke down two junctions along the M3.

They have also attracted the suspicion of police. "The fact they had that much money on them did cause suspicion," a spokeswoman for the road policing unit said yesterday. "As a result various checks are taking place into the backgrounds of the individuals. Their excuse was that they were going to buy a car, but we're checking out all the possible options."

Ms Mizen and her husband, Chris, did not stop to help collect the money as they felt it was "a bit dangerous". But she said she saw at least four cars pull over.

"It's that dilemma, isn't it?" she said. "People we have mentioned it to either say, 'You couldn't possibly take any' or, 'I would have grabbed some'. But the bottom line is that it isn't your money."

Police do not know whether the missing cash will be recovered. "There seems to be £10,500 unaccounted for and we don't know where it is," the spokeswoman said. "The money was blowing all over both carriageways of the motorway and could have gone anywhere."

Giant Snapple project floods New York square

Last Updated Thu, 23 Jun 2005 08:35:04 EDT
CBC News

An attempt to erect a 16-tonne ice pop in a New York square froze traffic and created a sticky situation for the company behind the stunt.

The soft-drink maker Snapple tried to get into the Guinness World Records book by installing the 7½-metre confection in downtown Manhattan on Tuesday.

As a construction crane began to haul it upright, a pink tide of kiwi-strawberry-flavoured fluid spread across Union Square.

The slush forced pedestrians to flee for higher ground. Firefighters closed off several roads, fearing that vehicles and bicycles could slip.

"What was unsettling was that the fluid just kept coming," Stuart Claxton of the Guinness Book of World Records told the New York Daily News.

"It was quite a lot of fluid. On a hot day like this, you have to move fast."

The frozen treat had to be fully standing to beat the world record, set in Holland in 1997 by a 6½-metre, nine-tonne ice pop.

Snapple called off the stunt while the ice pop was only partially lifted, fearing that it would collapse in the 27 C heat.

The company was trying to get publicity for a new line of frozen treats called Snapple on Ice.

Corpse Falls Into Traffic in Texas

The Associated Press
Wednesday, July 13, 2005; 4:05 PM

DALLAS -- The body of a Louisiana man strapped to a gurney fell from the back of a pickup truck Tuesday onto a south Dallas highway and into the path of oncoming traffic. "I didn't think it was possible for that to happen," said Mary Ellen Douglas, who was driving to work when she saw what she initially thought was a package that had fallen from a truck. "I wanted to get out of there. It was too freaky for me," she said in a story in Wednesday's editions of The Dallas Morning News.

Authorities said the driver was carrying the body to a Shreveport, La., funeral home after the man died Monday at a Mesquite hospital.

"The driver of the truck was not aware that he had lost the body," Dallas police Lt. Rick Andrews said. "He saw the open door. He stopped and looked. He turned around, went back and retraced his steps and found the body."

Drivers swerved to avoid the corpse and gurney.

Dallas police Senior Cpl. Max Geron said no charges are expected to be filed.

2,000-Pounds Of Human Waste Spill Onto Interstate

POSTED: 10:56 am EST January 18, 2006

EVERETT, Wash. -- You may think traffic stinks where you are, but it could be worse.

You could have been on Interstate-5 in Washington state Tuesday, when 2,000-pounds of treated human waste spilled.

The Washington State Patrol says it happened when a truck driver had to brake suddenly about 25 miles north of Seattle. The trailer had only a cloth top and much of the waste sloshed out. It spilled over the cab and onto the southbound lanes.

Not only did it stink, but it took about five hours to vacuum it up. Traffic was rerouted.

A spokesman for the state Ecology Department advises anyone who drove through the stuff to go to a commercial car wash.

The muck was being hauled from a wastewater treatment plant to be made into compost.

Mistaken oil delivery ruins home

Mistaken oil delivery ruins home

Associated Press

BETHPAGE, N.Y. — A suburban New York couple came home to find that at least 50 gallons of heating oil had been pumped into their house, rendering it uninhabitable, after a company made the delivery to the wrong address.

A driver for the Benit Fuel Oil company on Tuesday mistakenly pumped the oil into the family's home on Long Island through a long-idle filler pipe after misreading the address on a bill, said Juliann and Edward Tesoriero, who were forced from their home by the error.

The oil flooded their basement and rendered the house uninhabitable, the couple said. Everything in the basement — including carpeting, furniture and pictures — was ruined.

"When we came home, we smelled it," said Juliann Tesoriero. "There was liquid on the floor of the basement and we said, 'Oh my God, it's oil.'"

Benit General Manager Dennis Barlow said the driver pumped 50 gallons of oil through the pipe before realizing the mistake less than a minute into the delivery. The Tesorieros estimated it was 150 gallons.

"We are doing everything we can for the people," Barlow said. "We hired a company to restore the house."

The homeowners said they had switched from oil to natural gas about 35 years ago, although the pipe on their property remained intact.

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/biz ... 31673.html

Something similar, though not quite so dramatic, happened at the apartment building where I used to live. They were delivering oil but the driver was new or something, and used the wrong pipe, pumping lord knows how much oil directly into the ground under the building. It took a couple of months for them to dig it all up and replace it with clean fill. (while the smell and the equipment were annoying, I was secretly pleased because the place was owned by an evil, lying, violent dipshit of a man and I hope it ruined him)

TURNER, Maine -- A dump truck made quite a mess when it crashed off Route 219 in Turner and spilled its load of chicken feces.

Androscoggin County Sheriff's Deputy David Rancourt said the egg farm truck went out of control Wednesday afternoon, struck a pole and rolled down an embankment.

The crash left a sticky mess, and the road was closed for more than five hours to remove the truck.

Rancourt said the first deputy at the scene had to wade through the mess, which stuck to his boots like glue.

He said the Department of Environmental Protection has ordered that the spill be cleaned up Thursday, because it is close to a stream.

Truck spills 40 tons of cow intestines

Fri Feb 9, 10:02 PM ET

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. - A truck driver distracted by his digital music player tipped his semitrailer on Thursday, spilling about 40 tons of cow intestines onto a major highway in eastern Wisconsin.

Parts of Interstate 43 were closed for about two hours while authorities cleaned up beef byproducts such as intestines and bones, said Sgt. Blaine Spicer of the Sheboygan County Sheriff's Department.

The accident happened in the Town of Mosel around 2:15 a.m. when 25-year-old Ryan Engle's truck veered off the road as he adjusted his MP3 player, Spicer said.

Engle, of Kenosha, was cited for inattentive driving, and taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Spicer said.

The semi had to be towed from the scene. It is owned by Birchwood Transport, of Kenosha.

Truck spills 165,000 eggs on Va. highway

By LUBNA TAKRURI, Associated Press Writer Sun Feb 11, 5:43 AM ET

WASHINGTON - Drivers on their way to breakfast in northern Virginia on Saturday found it all over the road after nearly 165,000 eggs spilled out of an overturned tractor-trailer on the Capital Beltway.

"It looked like a large omelet," said Michael Karbonski, of the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The tractor-trailer crashed into a guard rail just after midnight Saturday, spilling its runny load and forcing officials to close an exit ramp to Interstate 66 and the far left lane of Interstate 495 north for several hours. Everything reopened just after 11 a.m.

The truck driver fled the scene before police arrived and had not been located by Saturday afternoon, said state police spokesman Sgt. Terry Licklider. He said the driver would likely face charges for fleeing and possibly other offenses.

"For him to just up and leave like that, that's kinda odd," Licklider said.

The truck and trailer are owned by H.L.W. Inc. in Moorefield, W.Va., Licklider said. The owner of the company, H.L. Wilson, told The Associated Press he hadn't heard from the driver either.

"Don't know where he's at," Wilson said. "Don't know what the deal is."

Fairfax County police used a helicopter to search for the missing driver.

VDOT spokeswoman Joan Morris said the eggs made their way to a drainage ditch, where they created "a river of yellow yolk."'

It's a good thing it wasn't summer, officials said, because the mess could have been worse. But cold temperatures prevented workers from using any water to clean the road for fear of freezing the eggs and the roadway.

Instead, the cleaning crew used kitty litter — 250 pounds of it — to absorb the highway omelet then swept it up and took it away in three trash bins, Morris said.

Wilson, 60, said the eggs were destined for a hatchery in Salisbury, Md., where they would have become chickens to be eaten at fast food restaurants.
