This article covers a whole number of cases of government fraud being used to stoke up public support for war or dictatorship, from ancient Rome right up to the Gulf War:

Not necessarily relevant to the present situation, but still a good read for anyone who is naive enough to believe that the average politician wouldn't sell their own granny in a heartbeat.

"The Gods of Eden" by William Bramely isbn 0-380-71807-3 Avon books examines history along similar lines. It's worth a read!
Hashishins (assassins), the dream of utopia, the promise of heaven in return for a dastardly deed...

:eek!!!!:

To justify war with Poland, the Nazis took dead concentration camp inmates, dressed them in Wehrmacht uniforms, then scattered them around a Polish border crossing and claimed the Polish sentries fired on them.At least it fooled some of the German populace,as there were already tensions between Germany and Poland over Danzig and the Polish corridor between East Prussia and the rest of the Reich.

and the Gulf of Tolkin resolution of war, which made American action against North Vietnam 'legal, was drafted two days before the Gulf of Tolkin incident happened.

Wehrmact Myth

Concentration Camps did not open until 1941 - in fact, there was not a single one on unoccupied (i.e. pre-1939) soil - Primo Levi (Auschwitz survivor). The Nazi party may have done a lot of awful things, but justification for the invasion of Poland was not required. Under Bismarck and Willhelm, the prevalent view was that Poland occupied German territory - taht is what caused Germany to invade her, not innocents in uniforms.

Concentration camps were started shortly after Hitler became Reichschancellor. They were at first used for the incarceration of political prisoners(Social Democrats,Communists,etc.).Poland didn't exist in the time of the Kaiserreich,it had been partitioned between Prussia,Austria, and Russia in the late 18th Century. When the Polish state was created by the Treaty of Versailles,East Prussia was allowed to stay with Germany after a plebiscite. In order to give Poland access to the Baltic Sea,a narrow corridor of land between East Prussia and the rest of Germany was given to Poland.Danzig was made a"Free City"under League of Nations rule.
