While this may well be a hate crime a close textual reading of the suspect's name would suggest it was not motivated by Islamophobia:

Police have named the man they arrested as Mohammad Moiz Omar

Worshippers at a Canada mosque have confronted and restrained a man who was allegedly wielding an axe and attacked them with bear spray during Saturday morning prayers, police say.

One worshipper knocked the axe from the man's hands, and held him down until police arrived, local media reports. A 24-year-old man was arrested at the scene in the suburb of Mississauga, and he has since been charged. Some congregants had minor injures from the bear spray, the mosque's imam said.

One of the worshippers said the experience was "terrifying" and described hearing a scream before turning around to see a man holding an axe and using bear spray - similar to pepper spray - against three people.

"By the time he was spraying, the people in the first row realized something was going on and one of the young men turned around and knocked away the axe before he had a chance to use it," Noorani Sairally told Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail.

The young man then held the alleged assailant down until police arrived, the witness said.

"Before he could inflict harm on any worshippers, several congregants bravely were able to stop him in his tracks," imam Ibrahim Hindy said in a statement ...

When I read this in the news, my thought was mental illness. The fact that he had an axe (as well as some other sharps) and bear spray doesn't really come to (my) mind, as someone who is really intending to take on a crowd of people.

Really disturbing.

A teenager accused of murdering five-year-old Logan Mwangi was heard saying "Where are the kids? I want to kill all the kids", a court has been told.

Logan's body was found in the River Ogmore in Sarn, Bridgend, last July with 56 external injuries. His mother Angharad Williamson, her partner, John Cole and a 14-year-old boy who cannot be named, deny murder.

A support worker told Cardiff Crown Court the boy's comments came after Logan's death.

Another senior support worker said she heard the defendant singing: "I love to punch kids in the head, it's orgasmic."

She added the 14-year-old also said he "might just plead guilty next week", but jurors also heard he told his social worker he did not hurt Logan.

They've ended up with something not worth having, having gone to all that trouble. How the hell would you go about stealing it - you’d need a bloody big truck & either a hoist or motor to drag up a ramp. It couldn’t be just sitting on the ground could it? - must be some attachment to the ground.

Animal rights activists might have carried out the attack.

At least 19 people have been killed in an armed attack in the state of Michoacán, in western Mexico, officials say.

Gunmen swooped down on an illegal cockfighting pit in the community of Las Tinajas and opened fire, local media report.
The motive behind the attack is not yet clear but a number of criminal gangs operate in the region.
Bloody attacks on gatherings of rivals have become increasingly common.
In recent months, gunmen in various regions of Mexico have targeted funerals and wakes as well as bars and clubs in their attempt to take out as many of their rivals at one time as they can.

Thieves steal maple syrup stash from Canada warehouse

Thieves in Canada have stolen millions of dollars worth of highly prized maple syrup from a storage facility, Quebec police have said.
The Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers noticed that barrels supposed to contain the sugary liquid were empty after an inventory check.

The theft took place at their warehouse in St-Louis-de-Blandford, 160km (100 miles) north-east of Montreal.
Police say it is unclear exactly how much of the expensive syrup was stolen.

Some 3.4 million litres of bulk maple syrup was stored in the warehouse, with a value of up to CAN$30m (£19m).
If the entire warehouse's contents were stolen, it would represent more than a tenth of Quebec's 2012 harvest, according to CBC news.

"The St-Louis-de-Blandford warehouse had been secured by a fence and locks, and visited regularly," federation president Serge Beaulieu said in a statement.
The federation also keeps nearly 13m litres in syrup in three warehouses to stabilise global supply and prices.
"I can assure you there will be no shortage in maple syrup," Anne-Marie Granger Godbout from the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers told the Reuters news agency.
The syrup was due to be transferred to a new storage facility in the coming weeks.

Maple sap is tapped directly from the sugar maple tree and boiled to concentrate it into maple syrup. Quebec produces three quarters of the world's maple syrup.

If the barrels had been stolen it would have been just an ordinary crime. But to drain the barrels (if that's what happened) would have taken time and equipment. Very strange!

Update:- Canada’s ‘maple syrup heist’ thief must repay millions for sweet stolen goods

Perpetrators siphoned syrup from barrels stored in Quebec’s strategic maple syrup reserves and replaced it with water.
Richard Vallières’s plan to make millions of dollars was deceptively simple: secretly drain the province of Quebec’s strategic maple syrup reserve and then sell the illicit product.

But the Quebec man’s daring theft fell short after police were tipped off and he and his accomplices landed in jail.

Now, the ringleader behind Canada’s infamous heist has a new challenge: paying his victims C$9m (US$7m) or serving six more years in jail.

I'm figuring that this classifies as a 'strange crime'.
I'm not sure why anybody would bother doing this in the first place though, other than 'for shits and giggles'.

Isle of Wight: Council's electric vehicle chargers hacked to show porn site
The authority said it was also aware some charge points in council car parks were unreliable.
It said these were due to be replaced with "new charge points over the next few months".

Michigan police looking for stolen 7-foot-tall metal sasquatch lawn ornament

Police are investigating the theft of a 7-foot-tall (2.13 meter-tall) metal sasquatch lawn ornament from a home in southern Michigan.

The item crafted from sheet metal was stolen from a home in St. Joseph County's Park Township on or after March 22 ...

It has a rusty brown color with various sharp edges to resemble the fur of the mythical, ape-like bigfoot.

It appeared the sasquatch was cut away from a steel post with a pair of bolt cutters or a similar instrument ...

A white panel van with dark driver- and passenger-side windows was observed parked in the area on March 22 ...

Brighton woman jailed for pre-meditated attempted murder

A woman in Brighton who plotted to kidnap, torture and murder a former lover – by following a detailed ‘to-do list’ - has been jailed.

Sophie George, 20, of Highbrook Close in Brighton, was jailed for 13.5 years on Wednesday (April 6) after pleading guilty to attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

It followed an incident shortly after midnight on Saturday, October 10, 2020, in which George, who was 18 at the time, arranged to be picked up by a man who was known to her.

On the way to his house she asked if they could take a detour, during which she jumped out and collected two filled shopping bags.

As the pair continued on their journey, George became insistent they drive to a nearby park and on several occasions grabbed the wheel.

As her victim – a 23-year-old man – resisted, George pulled out a knife in Selsfield Drive and threatened him.

A struggle ensued as the pair left the van and fought in the street, during which the victim managed to throw the knife into a bush.

George bit her victim’s finger down to the bone while he made a 999 call to the police, as did a watching member of the public.

Officers arrived on the scene and arrested George on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm and possession of a bladed article, but a search of her shopping bags and address uncovered even more sinister intentions.

The bags contained items such as protective clothing, cleaning equipment such as bleach, duct tape and a Stanley knife – all linked to plans to kidnap, murder and ultimately cover up her crimes.

A search of her address also found a number of notes in the form of ‘to-do lists’, featuring plans including ‘drive to grave site’, ‘tourture [sic]’ and ‘walk him to site, kill and bury’.

George was subsequently charged with attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon, to which she pleaded guilty at trial in May, 2021.

She was remanded in custody and sentenced at Lewes Crown Court on Wednesday (April 6).

And 2 lighters and one of those ones used for cookers? If you're a smoker you certainly won't be short of a light.

Isn't this just a load of standard items that a professional cleaner would carry to their job?
She's a clean freak.

Well... that's what her defence lawyer might say.

Cheese thieves. Wallace and Gromit not suspects.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/major-cheese-heist-puts-dutch-140522479.html?

"Gerda van Dorp, a Dutch cheese farmer in the town of Fijnaart, in the south of the country, woke up on March 29 to a mostly empty cheese storage room. Overnight, unknown thieves had taken from her shelves 161 wheels of cheese, weighing 3,500 pounds, that had taken months to make and mature.

The value: about $23,000."

"Unknown thieves", lol.
I guess they did see some guys driving a pick-up loaded with cheese but assumed that because it was Daan and Sem Bakker (who they knew) that they couldn't possibly be thieves.

Put stuff into plastic bag for disposal, seal it up with duct tape.
Cleaners generally use cable ties for that. In hospitals the bag has to be labelled too.
A cocky cleaner might do up some operating theatre waste with a label saying 'Used £20 Notes' and see if it goes missing. :chuckle:

Sasaram: How thieves stole a 60-foot-long bridge in Bihar.

Police in the Indian state of Bihar have arrested eight men for stealing a bridge to sell it as scrap. The BBC's Geeta Pandey in Delhi spoke to the police, local reporters and villagers to piece together the story of the theft.

How do you steal a bridge?

One morning last week, when four-five men - including some from the state government's irrigation department - turned up in Amiyavar village near the city of Sasaram with an earth excavator and gas-cutting torches, local villagers were happy. They thought the government had finally begun work on their request to remove an old disused bridge.
For three days, men would arrive at the site at 7am and work until dusk, chipping away at the remains of the bridge, cutting the iron with gas torches and using excavators to loosen the earth.
The metal was then transported in a hired pick-up van and deposited at the warehouse of a local scrap dealer.
"No-one suspected it was a heist," local journalist Jitendra Singh, who lives just "200 metres from the bridge", told the BBC.
"I go for a morning walk every day and last week I saw the men at work. Everyone else in the village saw them too," he added.

I think this is a strange crime because the shop owner felt he was entitled to shoot shoplifters and not just that but to shoot at them in a mall.

The co-owner of a Southern California shoe store who allegedly hit a nine-year-old girl while shooting at shoplifters has been charged with assault with a firearm, authorities have said.

Marquel Michael James Cockrell, 20, was scheduled for a San Bernardino County Superior Court video arraignment in Rancho Cucamonga, a prosecution press release said. Other charges include discharging a firearm with gross negligence and carrying a loaded firearm that was not registered to the defendant. It was not immediately known if Cockrell has a lawyer to speak on his behalf.

The shooting happened on April 12 at the Mall of Victor Valley in the high desert city of Victorville. Cockrell chased two shoplifters and fired shots that “instead hit the nine-year-old female victim”, Victorville police said in a statement.

The girl, Ava Chruniak, suffered three gunshot wounds, including two in an arm, said her grandmother, Robin Moraga-Saldarelli. One of the bullets broke an arm bone.

Police said Cockrell fled and was later arrested in Nevada’s Clark County. ...

Woman murdered during Facebook Live video

Police in Louisiana were investigating a horrific murder that was streamed live on Facebook.

Earl-Lee-Johnson-Jr.jpg

Baton Rouge Police say that Janice David, 34, was choked, beaten, and stabbed in what police called a "very gruesome, very evil ac t."

It happened just before 10 p.m. on Monday.

East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office Detectives were notified by state police of the Facebook video that captured a man stabbing a woman.

Deputies found the vehicle with David's body inside.

Earl Lee Johnson Jr. allegedly had tied David’s hands to the car steering wheel with jumper cables before stabbing her. Police say that he also tried to set the vehicle on fire after the killing.

Police arrested Johnson Jr., 35, and charged him in connection with the case.

Sgt. L'Jean McNeely of the Baton Rouge Police Department said that Johnson Jr. admitted to the killing.

He told reporters that the pair had apparently been on a three or four days-long "drug binge" before the killing. No motive for the killing was known to the police.
