Strange Crimes

The sort of casse Columbo would solve.

An anaesthetist is on trial in Hong Kong charged with killing his wife and daughter by placing a leaking yoga ball filled with carbon monoxide in their car.

Malaysian citizen Khaw Kim-sun, 53, was allegedly having an affair and had become estranged from his wife and four children, although they continued to live together, Hong Kong's South China Morning Post reported. Khaw is accused of putting the gas-filled yoga ball in the boot of a Mini Cooper driven by his wife, Wong Siew-fung, on May 22, 2015, the paper said. It said Wong and their 16-year-old daughter were found unconscious in the car about an hour after leaving home and were later declared dead from severe carbon monoxide poisoning, although the vehicle showed no defects.

Khaw was arrested in September and his trial began on Wednesday. He has pleaded not guilty.

Ingenious even if it is evil.

Thieves in Paraguay have stolen 42 powerful rifles from the police armoury.

During an inspection, officers found that the FN FAL battle rifles had been replaced with wooden and plastic replicas.

The inspection had been ordered after the rifles started appearing a year ago on the black market, where they can fetch up to $10,000 (£7,785).

The rifles had been put into storage but were still in working order.

Whether or not there's been a murder, the identity theft suspicions are enough to route this to Strange Crimes ...

Body found in fish tank in missing man’s San Francisco home
San Francisco police said Tuesday that officers found human remains in a fish tank inside the home of a man who was reported missing weeks ago.

Investigators discovered the remains on Aug. 17 and are awaiting the results of an autopsy and identification of the body, Police Commander Greg McEachern said.

The body was found in the home of Brian Egg, 65, who was reported missing in late July after family and friends hadn’t had contact with him since June, McEachern said.

Officers in early August visited Egg’s home three times and left after each visit when no one answered the door, McEachern said. There were no signs of foul play, he said.

“We don’t make entry into people’s homes just because there’s a missing person’s report,” McEachern said.

On the night of Aug. 14, neighbors called police after they noticed crime-scene tape around Egg’s home and a private crime-scene cleaner and a stranger outside. Responding officers reported a strong decaying odor and cleaning supplies inside and arrested the stranger, Robert McCaffrey, 52, on suspicion of homicide, identity theft and other charges. Investigators returned the next day with a search warrant and dogs trained in finding bodies, McEachern said.

After two days of searching the house, they found the body stuffed in a fish tank “in a concealed part of the home,” McEachern said.

Police also arrested Lance Silva, 39, who was also booked on suspicion of homicide and identity theft, he said.

McEachern called McCaffrey and Silva “people of interest.” McCaffrey was released from jail after the San Francisco district attorney’s office said it required more evidence to charge the men, including cause of death and the identity of the body found. ...

The Good News: The 3 suspects will presumably avoid the legal storm that seemed imminent.
The Bad News: I've got a funny feeling the cops may prove to be the least of these guys' worries.

Lab: 13 pounds of white powder seized is sugar, not fentanyl
A North Carolina sheriff’s office thought it made a huge drug bust, seizing 13 pounds of fentanyl worth $2 million on the street. The powder was found in a home along with other drugs and paraphernalia. A field test indicated it was the powerful opioid, justifying a host of charges against three suspects.

Most of those charges soon evaporated when a state lab concluded that whatever the powder was, it wasn’t fentanyl.

The sheriff’s office then sent the powder to a private lab, and the results arrived this week. New Hanover Sheriff’s Lt. Jerry Brewer tells WECT-TV that the powder seized in July includes no illicit ingredients, and is nothing more than “a combination of simple and complex carbohydrates.” In other words, sugar, worth about $8 at the grocery store.

While the article mainly deals with alleged financial and regulatory crimes committed by two Congressmen, this paragraph stands out:

Duncan Hunter and his wife, Margaret Hunter, have been indicted for the alleged misuse of $250,000 in campaign funds. Prosecutors say they used the money to illegally pay for personal expenses, including lavish vacations and a plane ticket for their pet rabbit.

You heard what happened to that rabbit in the cargo n the United Airlines flight. Better to get it a seat instead.

It's strange ... It's crime ... It's not the first time ...

Shoe store burglar steals several right-foot shoes
A burglar broke into a Virginia shoe store and took several sneakers that were all for the right foot.

It's not clear if the thief meant to take only right-footed sneakers or was too much in a hurry to notice on the night of Aug. 25. But Rob Wickham, a proprietor of Clean Soles in Roaoke, Va., said he lost 13 right-footed shoes for what seems to be no reason at all since they're not much good "unless you have two right feet."

"Pretty much risking their freedom for nothing," Wickham told the Roanoke Times.

The thief did manage to take a few things that could be used, including one whole pair of sneakers and a few shirts and hoodies.

But Wickham is still dumbfounded by why somebody would bother breaking into a store to take several right-foot sneakers off the display shelf.

"What was the point of grabbing one shoe off the shelf?" he told NPR.

Police are still looking for the suspect, who was caught on video during the heist, but had his or her face covered.

This isn't the first time Clean Soles got right-foot sneakers stolen.

In July, two burglars broke in and conducted a similar operation -- making out with the display items.

Police have charged a 17-year-old for that indicent.

Now they're on the lookout for a one-legged bandit.

Hmm, nope that still doesn't work. :thought: The thief must be part of a gang of 13 one-legged thieves. It's the only explanation.

I"m not sure these guys were looking to score that sort of 'grass' ...

Thieves steal California woman's new lawn
A pair of thieves stole a 16-foot-long spool of turf from in front of a California woman's home and the theft was caught on a neighbor's security camera.

Madonna Hanes said the 650-pound spool of turf was dropped off at her home in the Paradise Hills neighborhood of San Diego by a contractor who intended to return and use it to landscape her yard.

A neighbor's surveillance camera recorded footage of two men pulling up in a Nissan Altima and attempting to shove the spool into their trunk.

"I couldn't fathom that they would steal it in broad daylight," Hanes told KFMB-TV. "They tried to stick 16 feet of turf in a trunk that's only two feet deep -- it made no sense to me."

The video shows the men drive off with most of the turf dragging on the road behind the car.

Hanes said the thieves left a trail of turf that she was able to follow for about a block before it vanished.

The homeowner said she is hoping the footage will lead to the thieves being identified. ...

Farmer is shell-shocked.

A tortoise named Fergie has been stolen from a farm open to the public.

Sussex Police said it appeared a woman with a family had been looking at the tortoise and "slipped it into her hoodie pocket".

CCTV appears to show two-year-old Fergie being picked up by a man and passed to the woman, a spokesman said.

The pair then left Blackberry Farm in Whitesmith with four or five children at about 17:00 BST on Saturday before boarding a bus to Uckfield.

Paul Harris, the farm's owner, described the theft as "shocking".

Maybe somebody went out rabbiting, caught too many and decided to share their largesse with impoverished students, who no doubt could learn a thing or two about skinning and cooking a rabbit.

Maybe somebody went out rabbiting, caught too many and decided to share their largesse with impoverished students, who no doubt could learn a thing or two about skinning and cooking a rabbit.

That is a very generous view, but I suspect it's malicious. Judging by the photo, they were wild rabbits rather than pets, so the rabbiting bit could be true.

There could be the seeds for a horror film in it. A short at least.

The guy doing it dresses as Elmer Fudd, goes around singing "Kill The Wabbit". He then moves on to killing people named Rabbitte and Warren. D.I. Jack Russell is on his trail.

I didn't realize little Eiffel Tower souvenirs were such a big thing ...

French police seize 20 tonnes of Eiffel Tower souvenirs
French police have seized 20 tonnes of miniature Eiffel Towers in an operation to dismantle an extensive network selling souvenirs in the capital Paris.

A joint probe with French immigration officials resulted in raids on Chinese wholesalers suspected of importing and supplying the goods to illegal vendors.

Nine people were arrested, media said.

The small metal replicas are sold for as little as five for one euro at tourist hotspots like the Louvre museum and outside the real Eiffel Tower.

More than 1,000 boxes containing the pointy keepsakes were found at two depots and three shops in the Paris region on Monday evening and Tuesday morning, local reports said. ...

Another bizarre one.

After being jilted by a former boyfriend, a woman has been put on trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court, accused of faking her own kidnapping.

Jessica Nordquist of Whitechapel, east London, sent her ex emails and pictures of herself tied to a bed and dressed in nothing but her underwear, claiming she had been kidnapped and raped by a group of hackers, the court heard.

Nordquist is accused of emailing clients of her former boyfriend, Mark Weeks, who broke up with her in November last year. She allegedly set up an email account in his name and falsely “admitted” that Weeks had raped her, reports Metro.

Jurors were told Nordquist had bought a “fake baby bump” from Amazon in order to “fool her ex she was eight-weeks pregnant with his child”, says the newspaper. The couple then attended an abortion clinic. Nordquist claimed she didn’t go through with the abortion, later saying she had suffered a miscarriage. ...
