Strange Crimes

I can see how shooting someone in the head without killing them would leave you with a need for some creative actions and explanations.

He shot his girlfriend in the head but didn't tell her.
She finally went to the doctor, and now he's going to prison

A Georgia woman and her ex-boyfriend were arguing in her car two years ago when her driver's side window shattered and she blacked out.

When she came to, she was in his car, not hers, and they went to his mother's house because she had a head wound.

She thought she had been cut by flying glass. But her ex, Jerrontae Cain, had a secret -- he had shot her.

Thursday, a judge sentenced Cain, 39, to 25 years in prison for several crimes including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon. Cain had been convicted of felony sexual battery in 2010.

For a month after the shooting in 2017, the woman stayed at Cain's mother's house, suffering through severe headaches, dealing with memory loss and having trouble when she tried to talk, according to a news release from the Fulton County District Attorney's office. In June that year, a friend took her to the hospital.

Doctors at Atlanta Medical Center found a bullet in the back of her skull, one that would have to remain there because trying to take it out could kill her, the DA's office said.

Hospital staff alerted investigators, and the woman told them she didn't remember being shot -- she just recalled the window breaking.

Cain told police the woman, now 42, had crashed her car into a tree. But detectives found the crime scene inconsistent with his explanation, according to the DA's office.

They issued an arrest warrant but Cain was not caught until January 2019, more than a year later, when police showed up at a home in College Park, just south of Atlanta. He hid in an attic during a two-hour standoff until he surrendered, the DA's office said.

Cain was also sentenced to five years of probation to be served after his prison term.

I can't find any statistics on the biggest recorded apple heists, so I can't confirm whether this is a record haul ...
Thieves steal 50,000 apples from an Indiana orchard

A few bad apples stole 50,000 good ones from an orchard in LaPorte County, Indiana.

Jon and Robyn Drummond, owners of Williams Orchard, reported to the LaPorte County Sheriff's Office last Saturday that thieves had stolen the apples from an acre of trees.

"I was floored," Jon Drummond told CNN. "When someone comes in and commercially steals from you, it's like, whoa. That's a little disheartening." ...

"Almost every single apple from every single tree was completely wiped out," he said. "It was cleanly picked. I was like, oh my God, someone came in and stole these apples."

The Drummonds recently purchased the orchard, which was established in the 1860s, and even hosted a grand reopening on Labor Day weekend.

They estimate the missing apples are worth $27,000.

"Sadly, I don't have any insurance on it," said Jon Drummond. "I don't have theft insurance, and so I wasn't able to recoup any money. It was purely stolen out of our pockets."

The theft occurred in a secluded valley at the back of the orchard, he said.

The couple had just invested in building new gates, but had not yet installed locks, so the thieves were able to simply unchain the gates and drive through the orchard, he said.

"It probably was an insider job," said Jon Drummond. ...

He believes the missing apples might be used to make cider, or possibly sold through wholesalers or other distributors. ...

"We're looking for a pickup truck or some kind of trailer that could pull this large of product," Capt. Derek Allen of La Porte County Sheriff's Office told CNN affiliate WSBT. ...

Even Death's not safe.

The Russian city of Arkhangelsk caused a stir by putting up a statue of the Grim Reaper on a roadside to put motorists off speeding, only for thieves to steal it later in the day.

The short-lived speed sign stood at an accident black-spot on Leningrad Highway in the far-northern city, and soon became a landmark and talking point on social media, the local news site 29.ru reports.

The black-shrouded figure, made to order by a craftsman from local pine, was meant to "discourage drivers from speeding up on that stretch of road since it's been repaired", spokeswoman Tatyana Simindei told the site.

A few members of the public liked the idea - "it's good to see some creativity in the city," wrote one on the council's official social media page - but most thought it was in poor taste.

Now that's chutzpah!

A woman facing sentencing for shoplifting went ‘robbing’ again during a lunchbreak in court and the sentencing judge said her offending was almost frightening.

Julianne O’Farrell, aged 27, of 8, Marble Hall Park, Douglas Rd, Cork, had 111 previous convictions including 26 for theft. She pleaded guilty to several more counts related to shoplifting today, including counts of theft, criminal damage to items and handling stolen property.

When Garda Paul Russell charged her with the lunchtime crime, O’Farrell replied, “I was fleecing the city for years before ye ever caught me.”

The box of "sex toys” Maria del Carmen asked a neighbor on Spain’s north coast to keep an eye on actually contained the decapitated head of her missing husband. The rest of the man, identified by Spanish news outlet El Pais as 67-year-old Jesus Maria, remains missing.

According to the report, del Carmen, 61, asked a neighbor to keep an eye on her box of sex toys, which she didn’t want in her own home while authorities were poking around for clues that might help them locate Maria, who’d gone missing from their home in the town of Cantabria in February.

The neighbor, who isn’t identified in the report, finally decided to look inside the box once it started stinking up her house. What she found was far more shocking that a smattering of vibrators and blow-up dolls. The sight of Maria’s severed and rotting head reportedly sent her into “a panic attack.”

Some people do this for a living. There's a whole black economy industry based around shoplifting.

It's bad enough to be caught in the act of smuggling. It's even worse to be directed by police hovering overhead to render assistance to the other cops who've just tried to stop you by force.
Suspected drug traffickers rescue police officers at sea off Spanish coast

Three police officers were rescued by suspected drug traffickers they were chasing at sea off the coast of Spain, local authorities said.

On Friday morning, three Spanish maritime patrol agents attempted to intercept a boat with suspected narcotics off Costa del Sol. The agents' boat went "out of control" and hit the side of the suspects' vessel and the officers fell into the sea, Civil guard authorities said.

The suspects rescued the three police officers as a helicopter hovered over the area.

"The crew of the helicopter of the Malaga Air Unit, upon realizing the imminent danger to the civil guards, required the occupants of the other vessel to support them by public address, being rescued by them and being all unharmed," the police statement read.

Although the four men rescued the occupants, they were arrested for drug trafficking after 80 bundles of hashish -- weighing more than three tons -- were found in the sea.

The elderly Florida kook who used a water pistol filled with his own urine to squirt a female neighbor in the face has been convicted of battery, but will only serve a month in jail for the vile attack, records show.

The piss-tol shooter

Joel Benjamin, 71, entered a no contest plea to the misdemeanor charge during an appearance last Thursday in Circuit Court. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail and a one-year probation term.

Benjamin claimed he targeted the woman because she had been spying on him as part of a purported government surveillance campaign.

During police questioning, Benjamin showed no remorse, saying that he would “do it again,” according to the complaint.

The result of the crime was strange at least the extent of it

A furniture shop owner has been found guilty of deliberately causing an explosion that injured 81 people, in what was an "insurance job gone wrong".

Pascal Blasio, 57, of Gillingham, Kent, had denied being behind the "almost apocalyptic" blast at his shop in New Ferry, Merseyside, in 2017. The blast damaged 63 properties and left a man with life-changing injuries. Judge Thomas Teague QC said the jury at Liverpool Crown Court saw through Blasio's "humbug of dishonesty".

Jurors unanimously found him guilty of causing an explosion likely to endanger life or cause serious injury to property and fraud, in relation to an insurance claim. He will be sentenced on 23 October.

True love knows no reason.

A lovesick German teenager outdid Shakespeare's Romeo by scaling a 4m (13ft) prison wall and climbing up to his ex-girlfriend's barred window.

But the 18-year-old refused to come down and the fire brigade in northern Germany used a ladder to rescue him. German media report that the ex-girlfriend, also 18, had broken up with him shortly before his jail break-in. He was half-naked, apparently to avoid snagging clothes on the barbed wire. He could face prosecution for trespass.

A spokesperson for the youth prison in Vechta in Lower Saxony said the spurned young man was desperate to persuade his ex to change her mind. He managed to reach her first-floor window.

A strange (possible) crime and an even stranger witness.

Florida police investigating the bizarre death of a woman during a domestic row have obtained audio from two Amazon Echo devices.

Silvia Galva, 32, was impaled by a spear-tipped bed post in a struggle with her boyfriend, Adam Reechard Crespo, at their Hallandale Beach home. Mr Crespo, 43, has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder. He says her death was a tragic accident. Police want to establish if the smart-speaker, Alexa, recorded the dispute.

According to the police report, Mr Crespo said he was trying to pull Ms Galvo off their bed during an argument in the bedroom of their Hallandale Beach apartment in July when he heard a snap.

A strange (possible) crime and an even stranger witness.

I have this tale at second- or third hand:

My old force's Senior Investigating Officer was a tough old Jock who was not averse to a tipple. One day he was called to the scene of a murder. He was studying the body of the victim when his bleary eye detected a mynah bird in a cage near the deceased. Turning to his bagman he asked, "Does that fuckin' bird talk?" Baffled, the DC responded, "Er, yessir." Back came the peremptory order: "Well, get a fuckin' statement aff it!"

Prank? These morons got off lightly.

Two bodybuilders who hid steroid needles and syringes in food in a supermarket as part of a prank have been jailed.

Bradley Scott, 30, and Matthew Keam, 24, repeatedly put the items in products to shock customers and staff at a Sainsbury's in Aylesford, Kent. They were found in cereal boxes, garlic bread, orange juice and Christmas decorations on a tree, police said. Both men were jailed for a year at Maidstone Crown Court on 18 October.

Scott, of Lyall Way, Gillingham, and Keam, of Kerry Hill Way, Maidstone, had admitted an offence of contamination of or interference with goods, with intention of causing public alarm, at an earlier hearing.

Self-explanatory really -

Kitchen porter impaled in backside with broom after chef’s prank went wrong

A chef has been spared jail after his prank left a kitchen porter with horrific internal injuries. Gary Trice, 29, pierced his new colleague’s anus with a broom handle while trying to copy something he had seen on Facebook. He told Lewis Mitchell, 21, to fetch cupcake holders from the top of a fridge then placed the broom underneath him. When Mr Mitchell lost his grip on the fridge he landed on the handle which pierced his backside, went through the intestines and stopped just short of his stomach.

Absolutely stupid and reckless.

Florida police seek return of 300-pound Bigfoot

Police in Florida are seeking information on the disappearance of an unusual piece of property -- a 300-pound Bigfoot statue.

The Boynton Beach Police Department said the 8-foot-tall Sasquatch statue was stolen from in front of a store called Mattress Monsterz in October.

"Bigfoot is missing," the department tweeted.

Police are asking anyone with information on the missing statue to contact detectives.
