Chemical Crimes: Poisons, Poisoners & Poisonings

VX, behind Kim Jong Nam Killing

Another story creating noise recently is the assassination of the half-brother of North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un using the deadliest nerve agent ever created.

VX is a chemical so potent that the United Nations classes it as a weapon of mass destruction.

Malaysian police revealed Friday that Kim Jong Nam's body contained traces of VX, a colorless, odorless, tasteless liquid that's deadly in microscopic amounts

Whats wrong with this shit country why the people dont protest there?? :creepy:

Kim Jong-nam, the half-brother of North Korea's leader, was given a very high amount of the toxic nerve agent VX and he died in pain within 15-20 minutes, Malaysia's health minister says.

No antidote would have worked, said Subramaniam Sathasivam.

Mr Kim died two weeks ago after two women accosted him in a check-in hall at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

They say they thought they were doing a TV prank. North Korea denies killing the high-profile critic of the regime.

Who could be behind the attack?

Unravelling the mystery of Kim Jong-nam's death

VX is classified as a weapon of mass destruction by the United Nations. A drop on the skin can kill in minutes.

Indonesian national Siti Aisyah, 25, one of two women held, told Indonesian embassy officials that she was given 400 Malaysian ringgit ($80; £72) to smear Kim Jong-nam's face with "baby oil" as part of a reality show joke.

Doan Thi Huong, a Vietnamese national born in 1988, has also said she thought she was taking part in a television prank. ...

Family: Someone put poison on child's slide
by: Matt Johnson Updated: Mar 19, 2017 - 6:15 PM

They believe someone walked through their yard on Timberline Road in Marietta around 4:30 a.m.Thursday and sprayed what they think could be weed killer on their 2-year-old son's toy slide.

"He can get sick and you'd have no idea that he's been poisoned or something," Jeff Petka said.

Surveillance video from the home appears to show someone walk through the yard, reach into their pocket and leave something on the slide.

"You think you can leave your kids toys out and they'd be safe," Kathleen Petka said.

The family believes traces of the substance were on the suspects feet because the footprints left behind killed the grass.

"For something to basically almost burn and kill the grass within that quick would have to be some sort of poisonous substance," Jeff Petka said.

The Petkas turned the video over to Cobb County police, who are now investigating. They hope the video will lead to an arrest.

"Luckily we caught it in time and I just want to stop whoever did this and make sure it doesn't happen to anybody else," Jeff Petka said.

The family said they now bring their child's toys inside at night.

Neighbors are sharing the information on social media and taking steps to stay vigilant.

"Our next door neighbors bought cameras, but they just haven't installed them, so they're going to install their cameras," Kathleen Petka said.

The Petkas said as far as they know, no one else in the neighborhood reported anything similar and they believe it was a random act.

A newlywed woman in Pakistan has been arrested on suspicion of killing her husband and at least 12 of his relatives with poisoned milk.

Police claim Asiya Bibi had intended the deadly substance for her husband, and mixed it with his milk last week - but he failed to drink it.

Instead it was turned into a batch of lassi, a yogurt drink, and served to his extended family.

Police said the woman had been forced into an arranged marriage in September.

Such weddings are not uncommon in poorer and more rural areas of Pakistan, and are often pushed through by family members.

In this case, which took place in central Muzaffargarh, local media say the bride had tried unsuccessfully to flee her marital home and return to her parents.

OT, but here's a bizarre true story of a woman who poisoned several people. Happened about 50 miles from where I grew up....

The link is long dead. It once led to a multi-page account of the Marie Hilley case, with the following intro:

Inscrutable
spacer.gif

...
Marie Hilley is a mystery. Her presence still hovers over her family and friends, and with it the deeply painful questions with no answers. What made her do such ghastly things? What motivated her complicated stories and alibis? Was there anybody that she truly loved? And, finally, who was the real Marie?

Those who should have known her best knew her least. In the established tradition of 'black widows,' Marie murdered her husband. It didn't stop there. Her murderous escapades undermined what should have been the most sacred of family relationships. When it appeared she would finally be brought to justice for her crimes, she disappeared and began life anew with an assumed identity. One persona after another, discarded when it no longer suited her needs. The story of Marie Hilley is a study in deceit, pathological obsession and serial murder.

German authorities launched a probe into a string of deaths at a metal fittings company after an employee was caught trying to poison a co-worker's lunch. Police found quicksilver, lead and cadmium in the man's home.

The man was arrested for the incident in the town of Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock, northwest Germany. However, police now suspect he may be responsible for up to 21 deaths of people working for the same company.

On Wednesday, authorities announced they would be expanding their investigation to include the deaths of 21 more employees who have died since 2000. Two other employees are in a coma and another man is on dialysis. Many of the deceased died of cancer or heart attacks, which could be caused by heavy metal poisoning, according to the Germany's public broadcaster WDR.

I assume it's the same person since it's the same town and modus operandi : "Klaus O" has been given life in prison for attempted murder.

Two of them, a 27-year-old and the other aged 67, suffered chronic kidney damage from poisoning with lead and cadmium. Both men face a heightened risk of cancer. A 23-year-old trainee fell into a coma after ingesting mercury and has permanent brain damage.

A 43-year-old woman was arrested after she admitted to serving her boyfriend drain cleaner to help him into an "eternal sleep," police say.

Elle Weissman fed her 50-year-old partner Drano while he was semiconscious after taking sedatives on April 29, and told him she was giving him his medicine, South Salt Lake police spokesman Gary Keller said.

But after her boyfriend drank the product, Weissman called a ride share and took him to an urgent care facility. There, she told medical professionals what happened and they called the police, Keller said.

The victim was alive and remained in the hospital as of Thursday, Keller said.

German man dies four years after being poisoned by colleague

A man in Germany has died four years after being poisoned by a colleague and falling into a coma.

A 57-year-old man, identified only as Klaus O for privacy reasons, was sentenced to life in prison last March after the court found him guilty of attempted murder.

Klaus O, who is appealing against the verdict, peppered co-workers’ food with mercury and other substances over several years, leaving one in a coma and two others with serious kidney damage.

He was arrested in May 2018 after surveillance footage showed him putting powder in a colleague’s sandwich at their workplace in the town of Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock.

A sick scumbag.

A man in California has been charged with poisoning eight homeless people with a substance described as "twice as strong" as pepper spray.

William Robert Cable, 38, is accused of giving at least eight people food laced with oleoresin capsicum and filming them as they became ill. Several of the alleged victims were hospitalised and authorities believe the suspect could have targeted others. Mr Cable faces up to 19 years in prison if convicted.

"These human beings were preyed upon because they are vulnerable," Orange County's district attorney Todd Spitzer said. "They were exploited and poisoned as part of a twisted form of entertainment, and their pain was recorded so that it could be relived by their attacker over and over again."

According to the Orange County District Attorney's Office, the suspect approached vulnerable homeless people in the Huntington Beach area in May and offered them food laced with a substance "twice as strong" as the pepper spray used by police. Oleoresin capsicum is derived from chilli plants and is the main active ingredient used in pepper spray. The strength of each spray varies between manufacturers.

Thallium - it's not just for Russian assassins any more ...

This Chinese chemistry student pled guilty to attempted murder after poisoning his roommate, with whom relations had apparently gone bad.
Former Lehigh University student pleads guilty to attempted murder for poisoning roommate

A former Lehigh University student could face up to 40 years in a state prison after pleading guilty Monday in Northampton County Court to poisoning his roommate.

Yukai Yang, 24, of China, will be sentenced in January. He pleaded guilty before Judge Stephen Baratta to attempted first-degree murder and related charges.

Yang, a former Lehigh chemistry student, was arrested in December 2018 following a lengthy investigation. His roommate, Juwan Royal, testified at previous hearings that he was stricken with a mysterious illness that caused him to faint, vomit uncontrollably and eventually lose feeling in his toes. ...

Though the roommates had a good relationship when they started living together, prosecutors say their friendship went south in 2018. While Royal was experiencing symptoms, he also was being intimidated by racist graffiti allegedly written by Yang and directed toward Royal, who is Black, authorities said. In April 2018, Yang was charged with ethnic intimidation.

During the months that he was being poisoned, Royal lost 20 pounds, suffered headaches and heart palpitations and experienced pain that was like “hundreds of tiny knives going into his feet and toes,” he testified previously. His parents brought him to a specialist in New York who diagnosed him with heavy metal poisoning from the chemical thallium. ...

I wonder how/where he got the Thallium. Can it feasibly be home-made?

I cannot understand why he would've used such an intrinsically-detectable method of killing his victim

(ps other than the far-too-obvious prediction that this is possibly just a load of made-up nonsense....those that know me well will testify to the fact that I've been screaming the slogan "fake news" since long before the departing POTUS first appeared on "The Apprentice")

Shaking my head. "Move out" or "backing off" was not an option?

Its actually not uncommon for people with pyschosis to attempt/commit muder even though the are guaranteed to get caught. I think they get too caught up with the act that their self preservation and objectivity goes out the window. Some psychopaths do stuff as they just cant help themselves and need to see what its like.

Not unprecedented - previous thallium poisoner (non-espionage) Graham Young:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graham_Young
That's a hell of a story - he started poisoning at the age of 13. Thallium was subsequently banned in 1965 in the UK.

Can recommend the Graham Young episode of Fred Dinenage's documentary series on famous murders, if you haven't seen it.
It is tinged with black humour; not about the crimes but because nobody knew what to do with Young from an early age.

Official handling of Young and his offences was farcical. Investigations were so badly bungled that he was able to keep poisoning people, using them as experiments to test his doses. Young's previous history as a poisoner should have been a hint.

Available on YouTube -

Fred Dinenage Murder Casebook s01e02 The Teacup Poisoner

When he eventually ended up in prison for good, by then known as the Teacup Poisoner, he was seen as so dangerous that nobody would socialise with him or even sit at a table with him. Not even the prison chaplains would go near him.

Even Anthony Holden, Young's biographer, decided it was too risky to meet him personally. Holden giggles as he recounts this in the programme.
Young died at nearly 43 of a sudden myocardial infarction. Some suspect he poisoned himself.

I never understood the (ab)use of polonium (Litvinenko case), unless blatancy was a key element in deterrent. In 1988 I was working in a Research Lab when, according to the Press, Iraqi agents were supposedly using thallium to bump off exiled critics of Sadam Hussein. One of my Post-Doc was Iraqi and first the University Heads enquired if we had any thallium lying around (we didn't) and then discretely ask that we "keep an eye on" on him (we didn't).

Hacker tries to poison water supply of Florida city

A computer hacker gained access to the water system of a city in Florida and tried to pump in a "dangerous" amount of a chemical, officials say.

The hacker briefly increased the amount of sodium hydroxide (lye) in Oldsmar's water treatment system, but a worker spotted it and reversed the action.

Hacker almost kills the whole town of Oldsmar, Florida by hacking into the water system.

The hacker gave the command to dump a deadly amount of sodium hydroxide into the water supply.

An alert technician stopped it just before this happened.

This sounds like a James Bond movie.

Police have not caught the hacker.

In my day we poisoned towns by emptying the sodium hydroxide into the water with our own bare hands and had to carry tons of the bloody stuff for miles. Kids these days don't know they're born.

You were bloody lucky to get Sodium hydroxide! Back when I was a lad we couldn't afford to poison towns with that and had to scoop flamming lava into the water with our bare hands, etc, etc...

Disclaimer: Dear CIA, FBI, MI6, and whoever else may be watching,

Neither I nor to my knowledge, Mr. Weary, has ever tried to poison a town with chemicals or molten lava in real life. We were just having a laugh.
