Bat-wielding man injures multiple people in NYC during crazy crime spree

A crazed man left 10 people injured and a wild trail of destruction behind him during a Manhattan rampage Saturday night that involved subway assaults, street beat-downs and two carjackings, according to cops and police sources.

Suspect Bryan Thompson, 43, of Atlantic City, NJ, was wielding what his victims said was everything from a bat to tree branch to wooden clubs — or all of the above at various times — as he raged from Tribeca to Chelsea for less than an hour, police and sources said.

“He was a one-man crime spree,” a police source said. ...

(Long account listing the various attacks ... )

... The suspect sped off in the stolen car and was finally spotted again ...

He soon crashed into an NYPD patrol car and came to a stop after hitting a median, police said.

Thompson refused to get out of the car, so officers broke one of the vehicle’s windows and tased, cops said.

He was taken to Bellevue Hospital and charged with assault, police said.

“He’s been charged with all these incidents, but obviously they have to send him in for a psych evaluation first,” a source said.

Hmmm, would a badger eat human remains?

A man who murdered his uncle, and tried to feed the dismembered remains to badgers, has been jailed for life.

Parts of Graham Snell, 71, were found down a badger sett, in a communal bin, and in woodland in Chesterfield. Daniel Walsh, 30, said he cut up the body after finding him dead on 20 June but was convicted of murder last month. At Derby Crown Court Judge Nirmal Shant said it was a "gruesome and systematic" attempt to dispose of the body and jailed Walsh for at least 27 years.

The trial had heard on the last day he was seen alive, Mr Snell told police Walsh, who was also a lodger at his Marsden Street home, had been stealing from his bank account. The cause of Mr Snell's death remains unknown due to the damage to his corpse, the court previously heard. The majority of his body parts were found in the summer of 2019 but his head and arms were discovered in February this year after Walsh marked their location on a map for officers. ...

Springville man charged with shooting mom at dinner table, then dancing with sister

Criminal charges have been filed against a Springville man who police say shot and killed his mother at the dinner table, then danced with his sister next to their mother’s body.

Mike Lopez, 23, is charged ... with murder, a first-degree felony, plus domestic violence in the presence of a child and possession of a weapon by a restricted person ...

On Dec. 23, police say Lopez walked into the dining room where his mother, Victoria Ramirez, 43, was with his two sisters, ages 14 and 17.

“All four were seated at the dining room table when (Lopez) pointed a shotgun directly at the victim,” the charges state.

“Mike turned towards his 14-year-old sister and they gave each other a head nod,” according to a police affidavit. The 14-year-old then locked herself in an adjacent bathroom while the 17-year-old remained outside the door.

Ramirez told her son, “I know you’re going to kill me, and I love you,” before Lopez “fired a single shot, striking (Ramirez) in the neck and face, killing her almost instantly,” according to the charging documents.

The 14-year-old girl then exited the bathroom and stroked her mother’s hair before Lopez grabbed her arm and the two started dancing next to their slain mother, the charges state.

The 17-year-old then locked herself in the bathroom, climbed out the window and ran from the house to call another relative and police, according to the affidavit. ...

Police say Lopez had THC in his system at the time of his arrest. The 17-year-old sister told police she believed Lopez was providing marijuana to her 14-year-old sister, and that the sister knew what was going to happen ...

“She stated Mike has been acting really strange lately where he has been meditating a lot where he claims to go to different dimensions and talking about a lot of bad people” ...

When police interviewed the 14-year-old girl, officers noted in the report that she “was acting very strange.” She told detectives that she and Lopez “have been together a lot lately and they take turns sleeping so they can watch over one another.”

The girl then claimed it was not her mother who was shot, then smiled when asked about dancing with her brother after the shooting, the affidavit states, adding that she began “to recite the song” and “did not show any emotion” during the police interview.

A German train driver has been accused of faking sabotage on his own train by suspending manhole covers from bridges for the vehicle to crash into. Investigators found his DNA on the covers and ropes. But they have no idea why he did it, and he is denying any knowledge. In the FT report, there are suspicions he was trying to blame local schoolchildren, but again, the motive is a mystery.

When hackers can take your nether regions hostage, something has gone very wrong

There are times when technology can be a pain in the neck. And then there are times when technology can be a pain in rather more delicate regions – as some users of Cellmate, a line of internet-connected male chastity cages, reportedly discovered. It gives me no pleasure whatsoever to report that malicious hackers have been taking penises hostage and demanding bitcoin for their release.

From, yes, The Guardian again.

Okay, that's it, I'm lost for words! :mute:

(This could have gone in "Strange Sex" instead - but... surely it's the criminal aspects of the case that should concern us ):rollingw:

Can't find a bar in the Florida Keys? Just steal one and sail it away ...
Who is that on the tiki hut drinking boat in Key West? A man who stole it, police say

A Missouri man was jailed after police said he was found in a stolen floating tiki hut in Key West.

Tyln Earl Morlang, 26, of Independence, Missouri, was intoxicated when found alone on the distinctive charter boat, which belongs to Cruisin’ Tikis, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The U.S. Coast Guard spotted the boat — basically a bar under a tiki hut on a floating deck — at about 8 a.m. Wednesday while on patrol near Fort Zachary Taylor State Park. ...

Police said Morlang was alone aboard the vessel, powered by a 30-horsepower outboard motor and available for chartered bring-your-own-booze cruise.

He was found slumped over the wheel, said FWC spokesman Bobby Dube. The boat was stolen from the Hurricane Hole marina on Stock Island. ...

He was only looking for his cat.

A man accused of raiding a Melbourne animal shelter at gunpoint was trying to find his cat, a court has heard.

Tony Wittman allegedly stormed the shelter on Monday in full camouflage gear and pointed an assault rifle at a female worker. Police say the victim and her colleagues are traumatised by the incident.

Mr Wittman, 44, faces charges including kidnapping, false imprisonment, armed robbery and firearm offences. Police say he called the Lost Dogs' Home shelter on Monday but was told he would have to wait until the following morning to claim the lost cat. He allegedly went to the shelter later that day dressed in full camouflage and tied up a woman, demanding to know where the cats were kept.

Doctors differ.

A doctor has appeared in court charged with the attempted murder of a "highly-respected" fellow plastic surgeon who was stabbed in his own home.

Graeme Perks, 65, was stabbed in his abdomen and chest in Halam, Nottinghamshire, on Thursday. Jonathan Peter Brooks, also charged with three counts of attempted arson with intent to endanger life, appeared at Nottingham Magistrates' Court. Mr Perks is currently in a serious but stable condition, police said.

Mr Brooks, 56, of Landseer Road, Southwell, has also been charged with possession of a knife in a public place. He was remanded in custody to appear at Nottingham Crown Court on 15 February.

The two men were colleagues at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

I always thought the point of a bomb threat was to make trouble while remaining anonymous. Hell, these sorts of incidents used to be routinely labeled "anonymous bomb threats." This guy torched his vehicle to draw attention and then made his bomb threat to the cops on the scene.
Man arrested after making bomb threat near FBI building in Seattle

A 34-year-old is in custody after police said he made a bomb threat on Saturday near the FBI building in downtown Seattle, which forced the closure of several city blocks.

Police said the incident started when firefighters were called at 1:14 p.m. to the 300 block of Spring Street for a vehicle fire. Firefighters then requested police to order a tow truck ...

When police arrived at the scene, he told officers he intentionally set his vehicle on fire “to get the attention of police,” officials said. He also told them he had a bomb in the truck. ...

Police detained the man and quickly shut down several city blocks.

After shutting down nearby streets, police said they coordinated with the FBI to investigate the situation. The arson and bomb squads were called and examined the truck, and determined there was no bomb after deploying a robot.

During a briefing, the FBI said it was a false report. ...

The man was booked into the King County Jail for investigation of bomb threats and will probably make a court appearance over the weekend, officials said. ...

Are criminals getting stupider or something?

always thought the point of a bomb threat was to make trouble while remaining anonymous. Hell, these sorts of incidents used to be routinely labeled "anonymous bomb threats."

The reason some bomb threats are anonymous and some are not is that paramilitary organisations make it known who's causing the disruption by using codewords.

So in a situation where a bomb threat is made, the police or media would expect to know who was behind it and whether it was genuine.
A truly anonymous call or message might be taken less seriously. This is important when threats are being made most days, in troubled areas.

Police: Thief berated mom for leaving kid in car he stole

A car thief who found a toddler in the backseat of a stolen vehicle drove back and chastised the mother for leaving the child unattended before taking off again, police in Oregon said.

The woman went into a grocery store about 15 feet (5 yards) from the car Saturday, leaving her 4-year-old child inside with the engine running and the vehicle unlocked ...

A store employee told authorities the woman was in the market for a few minutes before someone began driving away with the SUV.

Once the thief realized the toddler was in the backseat, he drove back, berated the woman for leaving her child unattended, told the woman to take the child and drove away in the stolen vehicle. ...

“He actually lectured the mother for leaving the child in the car and threatened to call the police on her” ...

The vehicle was found a few hours later in Portland but police are still searching for the thief. ...

Reminds me of the case where a car was apparently stolen with a baby in a carrycot inside. The carrycot was later found floating in the sea and the parents were suspected (and possibly even convicted, can't remember) of the baby's murder.

The baby had developmental problems which had caused friction between the parents. All very sad and traumatic.

Yep ... You mentioned this case twice - back in 2002 and 2003:

Bloody'ell, you know everything I've ever said! It's like being married! To a woman! :chuckle:

The case was being discussed in the context of children apparently disappearing when they'd actually been abducted/murdered by their own parents. My example of the 'carrycot baby' did indeed result in the parents' convictions for murder though no body was ever found.

It may have stuck in my mind because there was no admission of guilt. We don't know what happened to the child. Heartless people.
