Strange Crimes

There's a film out at the moment all about the raw deal women have had historically, called The World to Come. If you feel like being depressed for a couple of hours.
The Handmaid's Tale is based on outrages that were being perpetrated against women somewhere in the world at the time it was written.
I learned that when I read the book on its release and it stayed with me. :(

Yes, as much as I am losing patience with The Handmaid's Tale on TV, the original book is excellent and sadly has not really dated that much re: its themes.

Women all over the world have a “ hard way “ to go from menstruation huts, hands and heads cut off, physically beat up, or tortured by their own families.

I personally never think humans are really civilized from the hurt they cause.

Animals only kill if they are hungry.
Male lions will kill the Cubs of another Male if they take over a pride, and someone posted a story about a group of chimps killing a young gorilla recently.

I live in the south “ Bible Belt “ where usually during the marriage ceremony the woman promises to be submissive to the husband.

This is so not me at all.

My wife is always my equal !
That would be in a church wedding? Back in the early '70s there was a big discussion over'ere about the part of the Church of England wedding ceremony where the bride would promise to love, cherish, and to obey her husband while he got away with just the loving and cherishing.

It was a big enough issue that couples wouldn't marry in church because the bride refused to say it. 'Obey' was never in British civil ceremony vows.

However, in 1973 Princess Anne left out 'obey' and it was all over; nobody was obeying any more unless they wanted to. :chuckle:
(I know this is true because I, along with every other British girl and unmarried woman, listened hard to that bit of the ceremony and muttered 'YES!' )

I have heard 'obey' again at weddings among my kids' generation but I suspect it's left in because it's quaint. :chuckle:

The police are investigating an attempted blackmail against Derby County manager and ex- Man Utd & England footballer Wayne Rooney.

"A complaint of blackmail is being reviewed by police in relation to photographs of former England star Wayne Rooney which were shared online.

The images, which were shared widely on social media, appear to show the Derby County manager asleep in a chair with unknown women posing beside him.

It is not known when the photos were taken but there is no suggestion he has behaved in any way inappropriately.

Cheshire Police said it was "reviewing" the complaint."

This woman used a little sleight of hand to steal more than 4 million pounds' worth of diamonds in London over 5 years ago. She and the rest of the gang involved have been tried for the heist, but the stolen diamonds have yet to be found.
Woman convicted of swapping pebbles for gems in London heist

A woman who secretly swapped seven pebbles for 4.2 million pounds ($5.7 million) worth of diamonds has been sent to prison for her role in the audacious heist at a luxury jewelry store in London’s tony Mayfair district.

Lulu Lakatos, 60, was sentenced Wednesday to 5 1/2 years in prison after a jury at Southwark Crown Court in London found her guilty of conspiracy to steal.

Lakatos was part of an international gang that fled to France after stealing the diamonds from Boodles on New Bond Street on March 10, 2016. The gems haven’t been recovered. ...

Lakatos, who was born in Romania and lived in France, posed as a gem expert named “Anna” who then went to Boodles to value seven diamonds for the buyer.

After she inspected the gems, which included a 20-carat heart-shaped diamond valued at more than 2.2 million pounds, they were individually wrapped and placed in a locked bag that was supposed to be held in the jeweler’s vault until payment was received. But when Boodles’ own expert became suspicious the next day, the bag was X-rayed and the store discovered nothing but seven ordinary pebbles.

Lakatos had used a distraction to swap the bag containing the diamonds for an identical one containing the pebbles before it was locked in the vault, according to security camera video released by police. ...

In other jewel heist news ... A solo thief snagged a multi-million pound haul from a ritzy Paris jeweler with no more than a knife and an electric scooter. Potential witnesses were apparently distracted trying to get a glimpse of Jean-Claude Van Damme at a nearby shop. The thief and an associate have apparently been apprehended.
Arrests made after jewel thief scooted off from ‘mind-boggling’ Paris heist

French police have arrested two suspects after a thief took jewels worth between €2m and €3m (£1.7m and £2.55m) from an exclusive Paris store and scooted off before the alarm could be raised.

The two suspects, who were travelling on a coach, were arrested in a motorway layby in Moselle in eastern France on Wednesday morning. Officers said a “substantial part” of the jewels stolen in the heist had been recovered. ...

CCTV shows the alleged thief, grey-haired and wearing a light-grey suit, white shirt and tie, arriving at the store about 5.10pm on Tuesday. Shortly afterwards he was filmed leaving the shop with a white bag of jewels and gemstones and departing on a green scooter that he had left parked outside.

Staff told police the lone man had at first pretended to be a customer asking to see various pieces of expensive jewellery before drawing a knife. No one was injured in the robbery. ...

After the heist, potential witnesses at a nearby cafe told Le Parisien they saw and heard nothing. Many were reportedly distracted by the presence of one-time screen hard man and martial arts specialist Jean-Claude Van Damme at the nearby opticians.

As you sow, so shall you reap.

Ebay security supervisor Philip Cooke, 56, was jailed for 18 months Wednesday for harassing critics of the company online.

Cooke, a former police officer, targeted a Massachusetts couple who published a consumer rights newsletter, sending them a preserved pig fetus and a book about coping with the death of a spouse as part of a "carefully planned" campaign of harassment.

…in three stages, according to the US Department of Justice (DoJ). In the first, disturbing packages were sent to the couple, including live cockroaches and a bloody pig mask. The second phase involved some of the accused sending Twitter messages to the pair, complaining about the newsletter and saying they would visit the couple at home.

"Animals only kill if they are hungry" is a bit like "All wars are caused by religion": it carries a strong emotional weight even though even most of the people who say it acknowledge that it is not literally true.

Like "I before E except after C" these sayings break down very quickly once you start looking for counter examples.

However, the important truth behind "animals only kill if they are hungry" is that no other animal invents spurious social, moral, religious or political justifications for killing.

Animals will kill to eat, or to get rid of a rival's offspring, or to defend breeding or hunting territory, and for many other reasons, but they won't kill for most of the stupid reasons that our species makes up.

I have heard 'obey' again at weddings among my kids' generation but I suspect it's left in because it's quaint. :chuckle:
My second wife said to me as we were planning the wedding, "I'll promise to obey if you want, but remember that you'll have to express your instructions extremely precisely."

In a TV report it was explained that Lakatos didn't follow the valuing protocol where gems are handed over, unwrapped, examined, rewrapped etc in order while being watched and so was able to do the swap by sleight of hand.

Staff were suspicious right away when she put the gems away in her bag and then took them out again when reminded/challenged.
At this point the gems were still in her bag, She knew she could get away with it once they were rewrapped.

I've been married twice, both times in civil ceremonies so there was no mention of obedience. I absolutely would never marry in church. It goes against everything I believe.

Mind you, I was raised in the '60s when the exact shade and cut of the bride's dress were scrutinised for hints about her virginity or lack of it or her possible pregnancy. I wasn't 'aving that! :chuckle:

Max might be interested in the Panther tank.

A German court has convicted an 84-year-old man of illegal weapons possession for having a personal arsenal that included a Panther tank, an anti-aircraft cannon and other items of Second World War-era military equipment.

The state district in the northern city of Kiel handed the man a suspended prison sentence of 14 months and ordered him to pay a fine of 250,000 euros (£213,000), the German news agency dpa reported.

It also ordered the defendant, whose name was not given in line with German privacy laws, to sell or donate the 45-ton tank and the flak gun to a museum or a collector within the next two years.

Authorities discovered the illegal military arsenal during a 2015 raid of the collector’s storage facility in northern Germany in an investigation into black market Nazi-era art which turned up two bronze horse statues which once stood in front of Adolf Hitler’s chancellery. Those items were in another man’s possession.

One math lesson Prof. Edward C. Ennels taught at Baltimore City Community College was, according to prosecutors, pretty simple: $150 for a C; $250 for a B; and $500 for an A. And in some courses, an A could go for as little as $300. Over the course of seven months last year, Mr. Ennels, 45, solicited bribes from 112 students, and received 10 payments from nine students, totaling $2,815, the Maryland attorney general, Brian E. Frosh, said in a statement on Thursday.

Mr. Ennels, a professor at the college for 15 years who served on the faculty senate’s Ethics and Institutional Integrity Committee, pleaded guilty on Thursday in Baltimore County Circuit Court to 11 misdemeanor charges, including bribery and misconduct in office, according to prosecutors and online court records.

He was sentenced to 10 years in prison with all but one year of the term suspended and to be served in a local jail. He was also ordered to pay $60,000 in restitution and will be on probation for five years upon his release.

Most students declined to pay the bribes and Mr. Ennels “often persisted, offering to lower the amount of the bribe or offering payment plans,” according to the statement.

https://marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolution/2021/08/is-this-the-correct-market-price.html

From the comments:

"Benjamin J. Herbst, a lawyer for Mr. Ennels, said in an interview on Thursday night that Mr. Ennels did what he did “only to keep up with a gambling addiction” and was “in no way motivated” by greed. "

I'm actually surprised the prices were so low. $500 for an A is NOTHING. I remember reading an article written by a professional paper writer a long time ago. IIRC, several hundred dollars was the very bottom of what he'd take for a short, simple paper. Also note, he could knock out a dissertation in virtually any subject in a few days' time. The hard sciences were the only subjects he wouldn't/couldn't do. College is a fucking joke.

Unicorn Figurines, Pictures Led Investigators To Boulder County Crime Spree Suspects
