Strange Crimes

Canadian soldier secretly fed cannabis-laced cupcakes to troops on a live-fire training exercise:

What could possibly go wrong? :headbang:
Can remember reading about this at the time, July 2018. So it's taken three years to come to court.

She was convicted of eight counts of administering a noxious substance to soldiers without their consent and one count of behaving in a disgraceful manner.

'Behaving in a disgraceful manner' is a subclause of the Canadian National Defence Act relating to conduct in military service -

93 Every person who behaves in a cruel or disgraceful manner is guilty of an offence and on conviction is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years or to less punishment.

Her conduce was merely 'disgraceful' rather than 'cruel'.

Also very silly. She could have killed someone.

Had similar done to me once on a day when I was driving around a lot. First I noticed was when I'd driven home and begun walking up the path to what I suddenly saw as my old house a few streets away. Couldn't fathom how I'd made that mistake.

A phone box stealing ring at work.

Police have released a CCTV image of a man they would like to speak to after a red phone box was stolen from a garden in a Cheshire village.

The box, belonging to Chelford Parish Council, was removed without permission from a garden on Chelford Road. A white Ford transit van dropped off a skip before three men used a digger to remove the box between 14:30 and 15:00 BST on 13 July, police said. The men asked a member of the public to guard exposed live electric cables. They said they would contact the energy network to make it safe, but never returned.

PC John Milman said: "We've been making a number of enquiries in the area and are keen to speak to anyone who recognises the man in this image as he may be able to help us with our enquiries."

"On a JetBlue flight in May, a man threw his carry-on bag at other passengers, grabbed a flight attendant by the ankles and put his head up her skirt before he was restrained with plastic ties. The FAA wants to fine him $45,000."
"The FAA is seeking a $42,000 fine against a man who refused to wear a mask on another JetBlue flight in May and threatened other passengers, including making stabbing gestures toward some. Crew members confiscated a bag containing a substance the man was snorting, then armed themselves with ice mallets before police took him off the plane."

Why arm oneself with an ice mallet you may ask? Here's the answer!
"The FAA did not identify any of the passengers, including a man who allegedly punched a flight attendant in the nose during a third JetBlue flight."
And you thought that being a flight attendant was just another glamorous job. :sstorm:

This Georgia man's elaborate fake kidnapping stunt was intended to win his ex-wife back, but ended up netting him a 70-year sentence of which the first 25 will be served behind bars.
Man Kidnapped Ex-Wife so He Could Pretend to Save Her in Bid to Win Her Back

A Georgia man was recently sentenced to 25 years in prison after he devised a plan to kidnap his ex-wife in a bid to win her back. ...

The Cherokee County district attorney's office in Georgia identified the man as 36-year-old Rodney William Metzer ... Metzer admitted to "14 charges related to an attack on his ex-wife that included kidnapping, assaulting, threatening her with a handgun, and leaving her bound with homemade zip tie handcuffs" ...

Metzer's arrest followed a January 1 incident at the home of Metzer's ex-wife. Officers with the sheriff's office responded at around 2 a.m. to a 911 call ...

When officers spoke to Metzer, he said he had just arrived at the residence and found his ex-wife lying on the deck and zip-tied with a pillowcase over her head. Officers first believed that Metzer was "a concerned family member," the press release said, but investigators discovered a much different story ...

Before the January 1 incident, Metzer tried to restore his relationship with his ex-wife but she refused, prompting him to break into her house wearing a mask and displaying a gun ...

"When he spoke to her, he disguised his voice. He hit her with the butt of his gun and tried to strangle her two times. He zip-tied her hands, assaulted her, placed a pillowcase over her head, and dragged her to the deck" ... It added that Metzer told his ex-wife if she moved from the deck she would be shot.

Metzer then returned to his residence to change his clothes and went back to his ex-wife's home, which is when he called the police.

The district attorney's office said that "evidence in the case was substantial" ...

"In the days leading up to this attack he faked a cancer diagnosis in an attempt to gain sympathy from his ex-wife. When that didn't work, he created a convoluted plan that the investigators in this case and our office truly believe involved a plot to kill her and then himself" ...

"When he couldn't go through with that plan, he instead devised a new plan to rescue her. Fortunately, Sheriff's Office investigators saw through this scheme and quickly arrested the defendant" ...

Metzer was sentenced by Judge Anthony Baker to 70 years, with the first 25 years to be served in confinement and the remaining 45 to be served on probation ...

The Ambassador, his Wife, her Military Policeman lover and a Murder.

A Brazilian woman has been sentenced to 31 years in prison for planning the murder of her husband, the former Greek ambassador to Brazil.

In 2016, Kyriakos Amiridis' charred remains were found in the boot of a burnt-out car in Rio de Janeiro. His wife Françoise de Souza Oliveira had been having an affair with a military police officer, Sergio Gomes. Mr Gomes later confessed to killing the ambassador at the behest of his lover, and he has been jailed for 22 years. At the end of their three-day trial, a judge described their crime as "bestial".

Another man, Eduardo Moreira Tedeschi di Melo - a relative of Gomes - was acquitted of murder but has already served one year in prison for helping to hide Mr Amiridis' body.

Mr Amiridis, 59, served as consul in Rio de Janeiro from 2001-04, and returned to Brazil as ambassador the year he was killed. He married Françoise in 2004 and the couple have a daughter.

Brazilian bank robbers strap hostages to getaway cars as human shields

Armed robbers attacked several banks in a small Brazilian city on Monday, using locals as human shields, leaving a trail of explosive devices and shooting at police in an assault that killed at least three people, a senior state security official said.

TELEMMGLPICT000269520753_trans_NvBQzQNjv4BqLUm2LqZ7QfPrWh62iB90NVTmGTZwRSZcqbDiPNar8DA.jpeg

The brazen attack around midnight in Araçatuba, a city of roughly 200,000 people in the state of Sao Paulo, is the latest in a series of increasingly violent bank heists in recent months in Brazil.

Experts believe a Covid-19 pandemic welfare program for poorer Brazilians has encouraged robbers to plan bold raids in sleepy regional cities where bank branches are storing more cash.

More than 20 heavily armed men carried out the attack using 10 cars.

As the criminals made their getaway, they used locals as human shields and burned cars while leaving a trail of explosive booby traps across the city.

There were two separate firefights with police and three people died, [a military police spokesman] said. Two of the fatalities were local residents, while one of the alleged assailants was also killed.

The statement said two attackers had been arrested. One passerby who was injured by an explosion had his leg amputated.

This Arizona man was successful in using trash can fires inside markets as a distraction so he could steal beer.
Police say man set fires at Phoenix Circle K stores to steal beer

Police arrested 61-year-old Dennis Ray Barrett on Aug. 28 after he allegedly set fire to trash cans inside three different Circle K stores in the Phoenix area. Investigators believe he set the fires to create a distraction so he could steal alcohol.

On July 31, Barrett reportedly set fire to a trash can inside a Circle K near Broadway Road and 32nd Avenue. Police say surveillance footage recorded Barrett setting a fire and then running out of the store with stolen beer. He was able to leave while the cashier was distracted by the fire.

Police say Barrett used the same tactic at two Circle K locations on Southern Avenue on Aug. 1. He reportedly set fires in trash cans inside each store and fled with stolen beer while the cashiers were dealing with the fires. ...

Barrett is facing three counts of arson of an occupied structure and four counts of shoplifting.

Brazilian bank robbers strap hostages to getaway cars as human shields
Whenever I hear of crimes in Brazil that are spectacularly callus like this, I think of news reports I heard in the '80s and '90s of street children in Brazil who were left to fend for themselves, who brutalized and sometimes murdered by the police, and who sniffed glue in little plastic bags to escape their misery. Some grew up, and may be returning the favor to the society that abandoned them.

Birmingham dancing thief's 'fancy footwork' caught on camera

A street thief was caught on CCTV using "a bizarre dance" to distract a victim before stealing her £9,000 Rolex watch.

Police said Abdelhadi Bahou Jabour approached a couple in Birmingham on 10 July and struck up banter.

He then broke out in a dance routine described by police as "part Bruce Forsyth, part Artful Dodger" as he slipped off the woman's watch.
After failing to steal the man's watch, when it snagged on his cuff, West Midlands Police said the 24-year-old jogged away from Colmore Row.

He soon stumbled across another woman wearing a £4,700 Rolex watch, which he also made off with.

Police said the "nimble-footed" thief's dance moves, which included "grinding up against the woman" and flicking out his leg, proved an effective way of diverting the couple's attention.

"Normally pickpockets try to steal using stealth so you won't even feel it," PC Mat Evans said. "But this technique uses the opposite approach, using excessive contact to misdirect your attention away from the sensation of having your pockets emptied or, in this case, your watch stolen."

He said it was a skill that took "many hours of training" to perfect.

"I've seen the 'Ronaldinho' technique used before, but this offender's particular dance moves were the most bizarre I've ever seen. Part Bruce Forsyth, part Artful Dodger," PC Evans added

In the second theft of the night, in St Phillip's Cathedral grounds, police said Jabour sang It's Coming Home in an attempt to divert the woman's attention, although she realised something was wrong and resisted.

Jabour then twisted her arm before slipping off her designer watch.

He was spotted in the city centre later in the month and arrested.

His mobile phone was examined and police said pictures of a house party showed Abdul Boychaala and Hussen Ehab, who were jailed for the same ruse.

This seems so odd I have to wonder if there's more to the story ... An Italian tobacco shop owner ran off with a customer's top-prize-winning scratch-off ticket when the customer handed it over for immediate on-site validation.
Scratch, win, run: Italian cops seek man who snatched ticket

Italian police on Saturday were hunting for a Naples tobacco shop owner who allegedly ran off on a motor scooter with a customer’s “scratch and win” game card, which had clinched the top prize of 500,000 euros ($580,000) ...

A day earlier, a woman in her late 60s had purchased two of the highly popular game cards at her local shop in a working-class neighborhood of the southern port city. The first card was a loser. But when she scratched the second one, she saw to her amazement it was the big win ...

The customer handed it to a shop employee to double check. That employee in turn passed it to one of the smoke shop’s owners for a final check. Instead, news reports said, he held on to it, grabbed his helmet, hopped on the scooter and raced away with the game card ...

To prevent the alleged thief from cashing in, authorities at the Italian tax office which runs the “scratch and win” operation froze the entire block of numbers of cards that had been distributed to the tobacco shop. ...

I've been married twice, both times in civil ceremonies so there was no mention of obedience. I absolutely would never marry in church. It goes against everything I believe.

Mind you, I was raised in the '60s when the exact shade and cut of the bride's dress were scrutinised for hints about her virginity or lack of it or her possible pregnancy. I wasn't 'aving that! :chuckle:
Oh yes you was :chuckle:

Man admits 'foot fetish' nuisance calls costing the NHS £21,000

A man has admitted making hundreds of nuisance calls to the NHS 111 line in order to indulge a "sexual foot fetish", police said.

Richard William Cove, 45, from Worthing, West Sussex, made more than 1,200 calls, costing the NHS £21,000.

Pretending to be an elderly woman, he would ask call handlers about their feet, Sussex Police said.

I didn't realize serial underwear theft was so rampant in Japan, nor that it isn't uncommon internationally.
A man was arrested on suspicion of stealing more than 700 pieces of women's underwear from coin laundromats

Police officers in the southern Japanese city of Beppu have accused a man of stealing 730 pieces of women's underwear from coin laundries.

Authorities were first alerted by an unnamed 21-year-old female college student, who accused Tetsuo Urata, 56, of pilfering six pairs of underwear from her at a laundromat on August 24 ...

The city police showed up on Urata's doorstep that week, where they found 730 pieces of underwear stashed in his apartment. Urata has been arrested and has admitted to the authorities that he stole the underwear found in his possession ...

"We haven't confiscated such a large number of panties in years," a Beppu city police department spokesman told Abema TV. ...

Several other high-profile cases of men stealing women's underwear have come out of Japan in recent years. This March, Takahiro Kubo, a 30-year-old electrician, was accused by the authorities in southwestern Saga Prefecture of stealing 424 pieces of underwear and swimsuits from teenage girls. He was caught when a resident in Saga filmed him attempting to steal a swimsuit drying on a clothesline.

In 2019, police arrested Toru Adachi, then 40, in Oita Prefecture on suspicion of stealing 10 pieces of women's underwear from a coin laundromat ... The police netted a haul of more than 1,100 items of female underwear kept in futon cases at Adachi's home when they searched his place.

Serial underwear theft happens in the US, too. In July, the Associated Press reported that Alabama police found more than 400 panties in the home of John Thomas Uda, 27. Uda was also accused of stealing underwear from laundromats in 2019 ...

New Orleans 911 Dispatcher on the Run After Repeatedly Hanging Up on People With Emergencies: Police

A Louisiana woman and 911 dispatcher is currently wanted by authorities in New Orleans after allegedly fielding several emergency calls and then hanging up on people in need of assistance.

Precious Stephens, 25, stands accused of malfeasance in office and interfering with an emergency communication for allegedly disconnecting calls without gathering the requisite information or relaying the callers’ needs to other dispatchers or authorities.

According to the New Orleans Police Department, Stephens is at large and has a warrant out for her arrest on both charges.

“Working as a 911 operator with the Orleans Parish Communications District at the time, she is wanted for allegedly disconnecting 911 calls deliberately without obtaining necessary emergency information or relaying such emergencies to the other dispatchers for aid,” the NOPD noted in a press release. “The report was taken on August 23, 2021.”

According to local ABC affiliate KATC, Stephens was fired from her job as of late last month.

The communication district allegedly noticed something odd about Stephens’s phone calls during her shifts on Aug. 20 and 21, officials told The Times-Picayune. Those problems were uncovered during an investigation into the quality of a random sampling of calls.

Those internal protocols, however, turned up more than audio quality issues, officials say. Stephens was immediately dismissed and her information was turned over to the police. ...

If convicted as charged, Stephens faces more than five years in prison as well as substantial fines. ...

…Though the flip side of this is that a good proportion of calls to police 999 lines in the UK are not emergencies, and a substantial number are nothing whatsoever to do with the police. l can testify to that from lengthy personal experience, having been a radio operator/call handler in my force’s control room for ~3 years.

A 999 call that l personally handled, for example, alleged that the caller’s next-door neighbour’s central heating was too loud. l didn’t hang up on that clown, but he was left with a definite sense of what did, and did not, constitute an emergency.

Naked Woman, 28, Drove Golf Cart Through Scene Of Armed Standoff, Cops Say

A naked woman on a midnight golf cart joyride was arrested early Saturday when she drove through a police perimeter in Florida, cops say.

jessicaesmith21.jpg

While officers were involved in an armed standoff with a teenager, Jessica Smith, 28, drove past several patrol cars while behind the wheel of a golf cart. Smith allegedly ignored a police command to depart the area and continued to approach “the target house of where the armed suspect was on the roof.”

When Smith, police say, refused to exit the golf cart, she “was assisted out and handcuffed” around 12:05 AM. Smith smelled of alcohol and was “completely nude,” according to a criminal complaint charging her with obstruction, a misdemeanor.

Just watching crime watch and apparently they are looking for the criminals who laced packets of sweets with THC!

Some teenagers who ate them had to be hospitalised.

Having overdosed on weed edibles before I can 100% confirm that it is a very unpleasant experience.

Having said that, I'm jealous that they got free edibles!

I'm guessing that the "criminals who laced sweets with THC" are called drug dealers, and the "teenagers who ate them" are called customers.

"...THC and come in a wide variety of forms, but usually it’s something sweet. £10 per 100mg THC is about standard in the UK."

Despite Tom Lehrer's song to the contrary, drug dealers are not renowned philanthropists. I doubt that they are charitably distributing something that costs them about £500K per pound.

I caught a bit of that t'other day when they were warning about phone/courier scams.

LSS the criminals talk people into emptying their bank accounts into carrier bags to hand over to waiting accomplices. I can hardly believe people are still falling for that.

Man deliberately reverses truck into house twice

In East Kilbride.
"The truck came into the estate quite fast. It took a turn into the street, and just as I thought he was reversing to turn around, he reversed into the house.

"I thought he may have taken a wrong turn and it was an accident, but he then pulled forward and smashed back into it again."
A man has been arrested.
