Strange Crimes

He nearly passed the test though.

A man stunned police officers in Nottinghamshire when he told them he had driven without a licence for 52 years.

The Ashfield neighbourhood policing team stopped a vehicle in Stanton Hill on Wednesday.
Writing on Facebook, the team confirmed the vehicle had been seized.
Addressing the driver's admission, they added: "It's apparently OK though as the driver only narrowly failed his driving test in 1970."

A driver in a 35-mile helicopter police chase only had a Legoland licence.
Met and Kent officers pursued the suspect from Bexley to the Isle of Sheppey, with a helicopter called in.
And when they caught the 21-year-old – after he ran out of fuel – he only had a toy licence issued when he was a toddler in 2003.

I used to give a colleague a lift on early shifts after she suddenly stopped driving herself to work. Thought nothing of it as I was going that way and it was company.

Turned out, she'd been driving all her adult life with no licence and had recently been caught in her son's car. He was not impressed when it was seized. :chuckle:
This is conjecture. My wife had a 'thing' about driving instructors. I don't know if one scared or molested her. We had a sort of mutual agreement not to probe too far in each other's pasts as we had both had difficult times previous.

What Isn't conjecture is I didn't realise until after she died was that she never had a full UK driving licence. Despite driving all the time I knew her. She was 25 when we met so it never occurred to me to ask.

Rather bizarre that the police left him leave in the first place,

A missing person's case was solved quickly Tuesday when police entered the man's house in upscale Hawaii Loa Ridge and found a bathtub filled with concrete and topped with coffee grounds. The 73-year-old owner of the home was "encased" in it, Lt. Deena Thoemmes told ABC 7 News, "in a state of decomposition once we chipped away at the concrete mixture."

Police questioned a 23-year-old man who claimed to live there. He and a 34-year-old man with him were allowed to leave after determining there were no signs of foul play outside the home. Police later learned the 23-year-old man had been in an intimate relationship with the victim, believed to be the 73-year-old owner of the home. … Baron, 23, was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals and Los Angeles police detectives on a Greyhound bus in Anaheim that was headed for Mexico. He was found "hiding in a crawl space under an enclosed bench at the rear of the bus. Baron had pulled back a metal plate near the bus's rear bathroom and crawled under the enclosed bench seat," the statement said.
Well, at least they learned that smells go though concrete.

How did the police decide that this death was not suspicious?

My reading of it is the police didn’t look inside the house til the day following this:

Police questioned a 23-year-old man who claimed to live there. He and a 34-year-old man with him were allowed to leave after determining there were no signs of foul play outside the home.

Maybe they needed a warrant to enter the house which they didn’t get til the day after. Can't see any other reason why they wouldn't have entered the house on the first day when investigating a missing person.

This lengthy Associated Press article describes Baron's (the 23-year-old's) description of the events in which he apparently confessed to the murder.
Documents detail what led to body in concrete in Hawaii tub

A 23-year-old man killed his 73-year-old lover, tried to make it look like a suicide, poured cement over his body in a bathtub and planned to fraudulently take ownership of his car and home in one of Hawaii’s most exclusive, gated communities, police said in court documents filed Thursday.

Juan Tejedor Baron is charged with murder, theft and identity theft in the death of Gary Ruby, whose decomposing body was excavated by authorities earlier this week from a standalone soaking tub in Ruby’s Hawaii Loa Ridge home.

Life imitating and appropriating art, the series Lupin is well worth a watch.

Seven people have been charged after an armed robbery was staged last month on the French film set of hit Netflix series 'Lupin'.

Around twenty hooded thieves attacked the film crew by launching fireworks at them, a Netflix spokesperson said. They stole more than €300,000 (£250,000; $330,000) worth of equipment during the heist, in broad daylight. None of the cast or crew who were on set - reported to include the show's star Omar Sy - were injured.

The crew were attacked while they were filming in the Nanterre district, west of central Paris, forcing production to briefly pause.

The seven accused, aged between 13 and 21, now face charges of armed robbery as part of an organised gang and receiving stolen goods, according to Agence France-Presse. Three of them are being held in custody while four are under judicial supervision. Police say they are still looking for more of the assailants, and have recovered some of the stolen equipment.

While this may well be a hate crime a close textual reading of the suspect's name would suggest it was not motivated by Islamophobia:

Police have named the man they arrested as Mohammad Moiz Omar

Worshippers at a Canada mosque have confronted and restrained a man who was allegedly wielding an axe and attacked them with bear spray during Saturday morning prayers, police say.

One worshipper knocked the axe from the man's hands, and held him down until police arrived, local media reports. A 24-year-old man was arrested at the scene in the suburb of Mississauga, and he has since been charged. Some congregants had minor injures from the bear spray, the mosque's imam said.

One of the worshippers said the experience was "terrifying" and described hearing a scream before turning around to see a man holding an axe and using bear spray - similar to pepper spray - against three people.

"By the time he was spraying, the people in the first row realized something was going on and one of the young men turned around and knocked away the axe before he had a chance to use it," Noorani Sairally told Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail.

The young man then held the alleged assailant down until police arrived, the witness said.

"Before he could inflict harm on any worshippers, several congregants bravely were able to stop him in his tracks," imam Ibrahim Hindy said in a statement ...

Really disturbing.

A teenager accused of murdering five-year-old Logan Mwangi was heard saying "Where are the kids? I want to kill all the kids", a court has been told.

Logan's body was found in the River Ogmore in Sarn, Bridgend, last July with 56 external injuries. His mother Angharad Williamson, her partner, John Cole and a 14-year-old boy who cannot be named, deny murder.

A support worker told Cardiff Crown Court the boy's comments came after Logan's death.

Another senior support worker said she heard the defendant singing: "I love to punch kids in the head, it's orgasmic."

She added the 14-year-old also said he "might just plead guilty next week", but jurors also heard he told his social worker he did not hurt Logan.

They've ended up with something not worth having, having gone to all that trouble. How the hell would you go about stealing it - you’d need a bloody big truck & either a hoist or motor to drag up a ramp. It couldn’t be just sitting on the ground could it? - must be some attachment to the ground.

This Utah man has been detained after he began acting weird this past week and his boss found a detailed "hit list" on the man's work desk that seemed to represent a battle plan for shooting up the workplace. Now he's telling police it was all just a hypothetical thought experiment, even though he had the firearms necessary to carry it out.

Utah Man Charged After Boss Found Employee ‘Hit List’ on Desk

A Utah maintenance technician was arrested after his supervisor at the feed mill where he works “found what looks like a hit list on [his] desk” with more than a dozen coworkers listed as targets, according to a probable cause affidavit filed by police.

Kevin Michael Jerman, 56, a U.S. Army veteran who claims to have served in Iraq, is charged with making terroristic threats, which is a felony. Jerman, cops said, “had the firearms, knowledge, and experience to carry out the plan he had written down on paper, especially with his military background.” ...

The written plan is quoted as follows:
Bring 9 mm with 3 clips = 36 rounds; Bring 9mm assault rifle with 2 extended clips = 20 rounds; Bring Smith & Wesson .22 caliber with extended mags, 3 = 65 rounds; First take out two in shop 2; Then take out who ever [sic] is in loadout 2; Then the mineral office 3; Then whoever is in the hand add area 2 or 3; Next take out skid loader operator 1; Then the office take out 3. Then one in CUG loadout.

14 Total kills. Have to take out internet so no calls from landline. Build cell jammer so signals could be jammed. If police arrive take a position high up to snipe use .308 for this.

When detained by police, Jerman described the written hit list as a hypothetical exercise.
Police got a warrant to search Jerman’s home and vehicles, and the SWAT team was called in to assist. In the house, cops say they found multiple firearms including three 9mm handguns with extended magazines, numerous shotguns, and an assault rifle. Jerman complied with arresting officers and was driven to the Juab County Sheriff's Office for questioning.

According to the affidavit, which was first reported by local outlet Fox 13, Jerman told investigators that he wrote the note on Wednesday during his lunch break. He tried to explain that he “was thinking about… what would happen if they had a mass shooting,” and said he had recently read an article about mass shootings.

To further complicate the situation ...
Jerman suffers from headaches and migraines “constantly,” and has continuously battled depression and PTSD, he said. He told cops he had a traumatic brain injury, along with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, joint pain, and Parkinson's disease.

“Kevin has a ton of medications that he takes on a daily basis that include pain killers,” the affidavit states. “Kevin also gets weekly injections of morphine.”

The motive behind the attack is not yet clear but a number of criminal gangs operate in the region.
Bloody attacks on gatherings of rivals have become increasingly common.
In recent months, gunmen in various regions of Mexico have targeted funerals and wakes as well as bars and clubs in their attempt to take out as many of their rivals at one time as they can.

Thieves steal maple syrup stash from Canada warehouse

Thieves in Canada have stolen millions of dollars worth of highly prized maple syrup from a storage facility, Quebec police have said.
The Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers noticed that barrels supposed to contain the sugary liquid were empty after an inventory check.

The theft took place at their warehouse in St-Louis-de-Blandford, 160km (100 miles) north-east of Montreal.
Police say it is unclear exactly how much of the expensive syrup was stolen.

Some 3.4 million litres of bulk maple syrup was stored in the warehouse, with a value of up to CAN$30m (£19m).
If the entire warehouse's contents were stolen, it would represent more than a tenth of Quebec's 2012 harvest, according to CBC news.

"The St-Louis-de-Blandford warehouse had been secured by a fence and locks, and visited regularly," federation president Serge Beaulieu said in a statement.
The federation also keeps nearly 13m litres in syrup in three warehouses to stabilise global supply and prices.
"I can assure you there will be no shortage in maple syrup," Anne-Marie Granger Godbout from the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers told the Reuters news agency.
The syrup was due to be transferred to a new storage facility in the coming weeks.

Maple sap is tapped directly from the sugar maple tree and boiled to concentrate it into maple syrup. Quebec produces three quarters of the world's maple syrup.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-19440465

If the barrels had been stolen it would have been just an ordinary crime. But to drain the barrels (if that's what happened) would have taken time and equipment. Very strange!

Update:- Canada’s ‘maple syrup heist’ thief must repay millions for sweet stolen goods

Perpetrators siphoned syrup from barrels stored in Quebec’s strategic maple syrup reserves and replaced it with water.
Richard Vallières’s plan to make millions of dollars was deceptively simple: secretly drain the province of Quebec’s strategic maple syrup reserve and then sell the illicit product.

But the Quebec man’s daring theft fell short after police were tipped off and he and his accomplices landed in jail.

Now, the ringleader behind Canada’s infamous heist has a new challenge: paying his victims C$9m (US$7m) or serving six more years in jail.

Brighton woman jailed for pre-meditated attempted murder

A woman in Brighton who plotted to kidnap, torture and murder a former lover – by following a detailed ‘to-do list’ - has been jailed.

Sophie George, 20, of Highbrook Close in Brighton, was jailed for 13.5 years on Wednesday (April 6) after pleading guilty to attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

It followed an incident shortly after midnight on Saturday, October 10, 2020, in which George, who was 18 at the time, arranged to be picked up by a man who was known to her.

On the way to his house she asked if they could take a detour, during which she jumped out and collected two filled shopping bags.

As the pair continued on their journey, George became insistent they drive to a nearby park and on several occasions grabbed the wheel.

As her victim – a 23-year-old man – resisted, George pulled out a knife in Selsfield Drive and threatened him.

A struggle ensued as the pair left the van and fought in the street, during which the victim managed to throw the knife into a bush.

George bit her victim’s finger down to the bone while he made a 999 call to the police, as did a watching member of the public.

Officers arrived on the scene and arrested George on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm and possession of a bladed article, but a search of her shopping bags and address uncovered even more sinister intentions.

1649345938621.png

The bags contained items such as protective clothing, cleaning equipment such as bleach, duct tape and a Stanley knife – all linked to plans to kidnap, murder and ultimately cover up her crimes.

A search of her address also found a number of notes in the form of ‘to-do lists’, featuring plans including ‘drive to grave site’, ‘tourture [sic]’ and ‘walk him to site, kill and bury’.

George was subsequently charged with attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon, to which she pleaded guilty at trial in May, 2021.

She was remanded in custody and sentenced at Lewes Crown Court on Wednesday (April 6).
