Strange Crimes

What's strange about it is where he was caught/rescued.

An Italian man has been rescued from a collapsed tunnel near the Vatican and police suspect he could have been burrowing his way into a bank.

He is now recovering in hospital after firefighters spent eight hours digging him out from under a road. But he may now need to dig himself out of further trouble, as police have arrested him and a second man for "resisting a public official".

Police believe he may have been part of a gang attempting to break into a bank.0

"We are still investigating, we do not exclude that they are thieves, it is one of the theories," a police spokesman told the AFP news agency.
The pair were also detained for damaging public property.

Local media believe the motive to be clear, noting that the tunnel was found near a bank shortly before the 15 August long weekend, when much of the city empties.

A film will be made about this; maybe I've already seen it!

An armed man who held a bank hostage for more than six hours in Beirut because he could not withdraw savings has been hailed a hero by the public.

Banks in Lebanon have put tight rules on how much money people can access, amid a deep economic crisis. The suspect entered the bank with a rifle, poured petrol and demanded his money for hospital bills, AFP reported.

His actions captured public support - with cheering crowds gathering outside and chanting: "You are a hero." The stand-off eventually ended peacefully with no injuries, after negotiators struck an agreement allowing the suspect to receive $35,000 (£29,000) of his savings upfront, LBC TV channel reported.

Police escorted the hostages and suspect away from the Federal Bank branch near Hamra Street, in the west of the city. Officials have not yet said whether the man will face charges.

According to LBC, the suspect's family were in dire need of their savings, with some family members in hospital.

Police investigate connection between fatal collision and two deaths in Zoetermeer

The police are investigating whether there is a connection between the fatal collision yesterday in Lekkerkerk and the discovery of two deaths in a house in Zoetermeer on the same day.

The fatal accident on the N210 happened around 13:00. In the head-on collision between a car and a van, the driver of the car died. The two occupants of the van were injured. The bodies in the house on the Kramerplan in Zoetermeer were found a few hours later, around 7:30 p.m.

Tonight, the Hague police said they are looking for a possible connection between the discovery of the bodies and the fatal collision: the driver who was killed lived at the address where the bodies of a woman and another man were found. "There is probably an incident within the relational sphere underlying the incident, in which these two victims are to be regretted," writes the police.

According to local residents, there did not seem to be much going on with the family that lived on the Kramer plan, writes Omroep West. The 72-year-old resident who died in the collision regularly walked outside with his two dogs. "I sometimes had a chat with him," says a neighbor. "Everyone is dumbfounded. I heard the neighbor screaming very loudly on Saturday morning. That was around 9:30 in the morning."

Seven years in prison for stabbing teen to death after argument over Playstation controller

20-year-old Melvin T. faces seven years in prison for stabbing a 17-year-old boy to death during an argument over a Playstation controller. That is what the court in Dordrecht decided today. The punishment is equal to the requirement of the Public Prosecution Service.

The 17-year-old Mushuraldo la Fuente died on 30 September 2020 in the village of Rozenburg, which belongs to the municipality of Rotterdam. The victim allegedly lent a game controller to his friend T. The two got into an argument over the device because T. thought he could keep the controller while Mushuraldo wanted it back.

The friends got into a fierce discussion online, Rijnmond writes. They then met in the parking lot of a supermarket to talk out the argument. Both friends took a knife with them. "The victim also had a knife with him. He also contributed to the escalation of the conflict. The court takes that into account," the judge said.

Disturbing trend
According to the court, T. ran towards his friend with a machete and stabbed him twice. T. previously stated that he was attacked and that he acted in self-defense.

"The suspect leaves the parking lot with his car, but then also comes back. According to several witnesses, he is in possession of a knife when he arrives. That is why the court does not assume severe weather," the judge said.

The court in Dordrecht pointed this afternoon to the disturbing trend that quarrels between young people are increasingly being "solved" with a knife.

Self-defence rather than severe weather.

Firefighters hauled it up the staircase on ropes. Whether it was driven down the stairs isn’t stated - I think it would be more damaged if so..

Here's a "crime" fitting the current context of drought conditions and shrinking water resources.

Someone released 16 million gallons of water from a Nebraska irrigation system into a river. Why anyone would do this is a mystery. It's also unknown what sort of law(s) this action may have violated and / or what sort of charges could be brought if the perpetrator is ever identified.
Nebraska authorities baffled by missing canal water mystery

Authorities in Nebraska are trying to determine who released 16 million gallons of water by opening a dam on an irrigation channel one night this month — and why.

The puzzling water release from the Cambridge Canal reduced the flow to some 18,000 acres of crops and jeopardized expensive irrigation equipment, according to Brad Edgerton, the general manager of the Frenchman Cambridge Irrigation District that runs the nearly 48-mile-long waterway.

The canal was flowing at its normal rate of 150 cubic feet per second when Edgerton checked on his computer on the night of Aug. 13, but by the following morning the flow had been cut in half. Something had happened at the canal’s dam near the town of Cambridge, about 200 miles west of Lincoln.

Edgerton drove there and discovered that someone had wrenched open the dam’s two 10-foot sluice gates, sending the precious water down the Republican River. He estimates that about 50-acre-feet of water was lost during the roughly eight hours that the gates were open, and that the water was worth around $2,600 based on the $52-per-acre-foot price that farmers pay. ...

“It was an unfortunate situation. In the scheme of things, it wasn’t a lot of water, but it was an inconvenience,” he said. ...

Furnas County Sheriff Doug Brown told the Lincoln Journal Star that he could only guess why someone would release the water.

“There are a lot of different scenarios and theories,” he said. “But there is no evidence to lean one way or another, so all theories are still viable.”

Edgerton said he thinks the sheriff is following up on every rumor he hears but so far is stumped.

“I don’t believe they’re any closer to solving it,” he said Thursday.

It’s not clear if any state law governs the act of releasing canal water back into a river — or provides penalties — but Furnas County Attorney Patrick Calkins said he’ll try to find one if the sheriff does find out who grabbed the hand crank wheel from where it hung nearby and used it to open the gates. ...

Filming halted for Baltimore TV series ‘Lady in the Lake’ after violence threatened against the cast, crew, police say

By Jessica Calefati and Justin Fenton

Production of a new, limited television series adapted from a Laura Lippman novel abruptly stopped on Friday after drug dealers urging the cast and crew to clear the set on the west side of downtown threatened to shoot someone, Baltimore Police Department spokesperson James Moses said.

“The leaders of the production decided to err on the side of caution and reschedule the shoot after they found another location,” Moses added. The dealers also attempted to extort $50,000 from the crew to stand down, he said, but producers declined to pay. The encounter unfolded on the 200 block of Park Avenue, a couple blocks from Lexington Market.

The series, called “Lady in the Lake,” stars Academy Award winner Natalie Portman and Emmy nominee Moses Ingram and is set to premiere on Apple TV+. Created and directed by Alma Har’el, the show takes place in 1960s Baltimore, when a white housewife turned investigative reporter probing an unsolved murder clashes with a Black community activist fighting for social justice. The 2019 Lippman novel the series is adapted from was a New York Times bestseller. Lippman is a former Baltimore Sun reporter and the author of more than 20 novels.

Filming for the series started in Maryland in April and is expected to continue through October, according to a state Department of Commerce press release. Gov. Larry Hogan touted the positive impact production would have on the state when production company Endeavor Content first announced plans to film here. Representatives of Endeavor Content and Portman could not be reached for comment. Lippman could not be reached for comment.

A high flier with low ambitions.

A US man who stole a small aeroplane and threatened to fly it into a Walmart shop has been charged with grand larceny and making terroristic threats.

The man - named by police as Cory Wayne Patterson - was arrested after landing in a field, having circled near Tupelo, Mississippi, for hours.
The Walmart was evacuated while police spoke to him in mid-air.
The suspect worked at the local airport but was not believed to hold a pilot's licence, the city's police said.
However, he is known to have received some flight instruction.
Mr Patterson is alleged to have stolen the Beechcraft King Air twin-engine aircraft shortly after 05:00 local time (10:00 GMT) before taking to the skies.

The small utility craft is capable of seating 10-11 people.
Shortly after taking control of the plane, the suspect phoned 911, saying he was planning to fly into a branch of Walmart.
The threat prompted an evacuation of the building and other nearby shops as officers warned of a "dangerous situation".

He won't sleep easy anymore, can't see how the mattress was moved without P.O.s noticing.

A convicted Limerick gangland murderer has been found with an unauthorised luxury mattress in his jail cell.

Christopher Costello of the McCarthy-Dundon crime gang who was convicted of murdering rival crime boss Kieran Keane in 2003 had previously received extra jail time after mobile phones were found in his cell.

But in recent weeks, he was also found to have a mattress from the luxury brand, Emma. It is understood that the mattress originally belonged to another inmate who had been granted it on health grounds.

It is believed the mattress was taken into the Midlands Prison when a prisoner from Portlaoise Prison was transferred there and had been permitted the special mattress due to back problems. Following the search, the mattress was removed from Costello’s cell, it is understood.

This Michigan man with alleged mental health issues and a deep entanglement with QAnon and similar conspiracy theories began shooting his family before being gunned down by police.
Daughter: Walled Lake man fell into conspiracy rabbit hole before shooting family

A Walled Lake man whose daughter said had been struggling with mental issues after embracing conspiracy theories was fatally shot by police Sunday after he allegedly shot and killed his wife and injured another daughter.

According to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, police received a “chilling” 911 call at 4:11 a.m. Sunday from a 25-year-old woman who said her father had shot her and killed her mother, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said ...

Officers were moving toward the house when Igor Lanis, 53, came out the front door with a shotgun and started shooting at officers, Bouchard said.

The officers returned fire, killing Lanis ... No officers were injured.

When they went into the house, they found Lanis’ daughter trying to crawl out of the house, Bouchard said. She had been shot with a shotgun in the back and legs.

Her 56-year-old mother was dead inside the home, Bouchard said. She had been shot at least four times with a handgun. ...

Police, who do not know what led to the shooting, did not identify the victims. But the suspect's daughter, Rebecca Lanis, told The Detroit News that they were her mother, Tina Lanis, and sister, Rachel Lanis.

The family dog also was shot multiple times and killed. ...

Rebecca Lanis blamed her father's mental health on his recent online interest in extremism and conspiracy theories.

"I think that he was always prone to (mental issues), but it really brought him down when he was reading all those weird things on the internet," Lanis said.

Igor Lanis had no criminal history and there was no record of protective orders, Bouchard said. He apparently had been “more agitated” than normal in the past year. ...

Rebecca Lanis said after President Donald Trump lost the 2020 presidential election, her father started falling deeper into "crazy ideas" online, including QAnon conspiracy theories about Trump and vaccines.

"Nobody could talk him out of them," she said. ...

Lebanon: Two banks held up by customers for their own savings

Two banks in Lebanon were held up by customers demanding their own savings on Wednesday in separate incidents, as the country spirals ever further into economic chaos.

In the first incident at a Beirut branch of Blom Bank, an apparently armed woman and her associates left the bank carrying more than $13,000 in cash from her own account, a source from a depositors' advocacy group said.

Sali Hafiz told local TV news channel Al Jadeed that the gun was a toy, and that she was seeking to retrieve money to finance her sister's cancer treatment. ...

Elsewhere on Wednesday, an armed man reportedly entered a bank in the city of Aley demanding the release of his trapped savings. A security source told Reuters that he was arrested by police after making off with $30,000 of his own money.

This (freezing accounts by banks) is terrifying. Though this stops banks from becoming bankrupt, it does nothing for people who have to survive. The whole cashless society that is regularly pushed at us also scares me as then I wouldn't even have a random bill on me to get things like food if the whole system went down, either intentionally or unintentionally.

Definitely, cashless will make things more difficult for us all in the future.

This is bizarre:

Arkansas Couple Arrested After Man Saws Off His Own Leg in Front of 5-Year-Old Daughter

Shannon Cox, 48, of Boone County, Arkansas allegedly claimed he was Jesus and Satan as he got "verbally abusive" with his wife Sandy Cox, 30, before amputating his leg in front of their 5-year-old daughter

Grisly details have emerged in the case of an Arkansas couple who are both charged with first-degree felony endangerment of a minor.

According to an affidavit filed in the Circuit Court of Boone County, which was obtained by PEOPLE, Shannon Cox, 48, was arrested early last month after he used a chop saw to cut off his own leg in front of his 5-year-old daughter, after her mother Sandy Cox, 30, left her at home.

On Tuesday, Aug. 2, Boone County Sheriff's officers responded to reports of a man with an amputated leg, when they found Cox lying naked in front of a residence with his leg missing. He was airlifted to a nearby hospital.

His wife Sandy was not at home at the time, but told police her husband was "acting odd all day long" but he "never touched her" and "was only being verbally abusive," according to the affidavit.

Why was the mother arrested? She can't have known hubby would go bonkers.

Why was the mother arrested? She can't have known hubby would go bonkers.

According to the full news article:
Sandy then left the residence at around 8:15 p.m. because she "was scared Shannon would kill her" and went to stay with a friend, leaving their daughter at home, the affidavit continues.

"When I asked Sandy why she didn't take her daughter with her, she said she was worried about Shannon killing her and wasn't worried about her daughter," wrote Corporal Jason Brisco.

She's charged with child endangerment because her husband was acting incoherently and verbally threatening her (the wife) with violence, yet she only removed herself from the scene and left the daughter behind.

WTF! The authorities should remove that child from her custody.
Awful.

Edit: I'm wondering if this is more complex than it appears.

After reading the article it seems there isn't any info as to why the poor bloke felt he needed to chop off his leg or how he did it?
I'm guessing 'chainsaw' and very quickly too. But as to what created his mental state? Would it have been drink and/or drugs? Or do we think he was just a whacko nut-job?

I'm guessing 'chainsaw' and very quickly too. ...

The article states he used a chop saw. A chop saw is a power saw that makes only straight cuts (i.e., no provision for making arbitrarily angled cuts like a powered miter saw).

It's not uncommon for people to casually call both saw types a "chop saw."

A chop saw is something you'd mount on a bench, so he would have to deliberately lift his leg up to do the sawing. So, not an accident,

The article states he used a chop saw.
So it does - dunno how I missed that? Even reading it twice again just now I almost missed it. I think my eyes must have somehow skipped over it? Beats me.
