Stumbled across this site last night. Interesting report, the creator has done a really nice job with the animation.

Anyhow my hypothesis is that the thunderstorm did damage to the local electrical grid and what was seen was either downed lines arcing or transformer fires. It looks pretty much identical to what I saw in Arlington, Virginia when Tropical Storm Isabel hit. I was equally perplexed by what I was seeing until I realized it was all the electrical transformers in town overloading and blowing up.

(BTW I'd like to add that the guy has a really cool webpage with enough weird stuff to look at to keep you occupied for hours :) )

Judging from his description and the photo on the page this appears to be area from which he observed the phenomena.

If you zoom out you'll see Opryland to the west and across the river from that is a densely populated residential area and a high-tension power line running along the main thoroughfare...
 
Looks like Sprites to me (not the mythical kind).

Have been hundreds of sightings of Sprites above cloud level - may be that this is one below....

It's just a Flash animation. I don't think it's supposed to be a film.
