Streakers

How did the concept of streaking begin? Who was the first streaker and why? Is it just a case of a drunken moron getting their kit off and evading security, or was there a more serious protest behind this when it first began? When did it begin?
I can see a sketch in this - streaking through the ages....during the crucifixion, across the coliseum, between the armies during the Battle of Bosworth....

I was going to say it all started in the free love era, but I think Lady Godiva got in there a bit earlier (by a few hundred years). She did it to protest about taxes. (If she did it - there has been some debate I think).

I like the new BBC policy on it - shown in all its glory. :D

I now have this image of someone at the crucifixion holding a sign saying "John 3:16". (Presumably it would be John, himself.)

My understanding is that streaking is usually motivated by severe intoxication and peer pressure. I propose, therefore, that streaking (and related acts of exhibitionism) date back at least as far as alcohol.

(I wouldn't count Lady Godiva as a streaker. For a start she didn't move fast enough. Secondly she was motivated by concern for other people, rather than four lagers and 50 bucks if she did a full circuit before getting arrested.)

I don't have chapter and verse on it but I am sure streaking as a
named activity during sporting events was a seventies thing. I
would not be surprised if it originated in Australia.

There was a song about it which was much played by the likes of
Terry Wogan. Can't recall any of the words except for a final
cry of "Don't look, Ethel!"

Incidentally, I was going to look up the old thread on naked football
at US colleges, having found a reference to naked running in Manchester
during the 19thC. Ahead of the times in these here parts. ;)

That was Ray Stevens' The Streak. You can listen to it at Streakerama There's several streaking kinks there as well.
(Obviously, I mistyped 'links' there but on second thoughts....)

I note there's an ad for viagra at the top of that site, which would add another dimension to some of these appearances.
