I'm concerned for your health. It's not the quality of the cider which worries me but the presence of a black rat, the animal which traditionally carried plague from foreign parts.

I do hope the farmer is exaggerating and is really using a brown rat!

Escargot,

Fear not, due to the excessive alchohol content and the 'special' brewing process the Cider doubled as disinfectant, paint stripper and high explosive.

A veritable 'wonder' liguid

It confuses people who live there, mate! You get people living next door to one another with different bin-collection days and paying different Council Tax rates to different authorities. The property, oddly enough, costs the same, nonetheless..

Covert gerrymandering in the mid-nineties, I'm afraid: if the city had been made into a metropolitan county the tories would have been pushed into a small minority from the slim majority they held on the City Council at the time. So despite all the sense it would have made the Major govt decided just to abolish Avon County and dismember it, and return Bristol to City and County status, rather than making Greater Bristol. Come '97 they locally lost out heavily anyway, so it served no great purpose in the long run.

As an example of some of the madness check out the address of Gloucestershire County Cricket Ground...

Nevil Road, Bishopston, Bristol 7

Well, the theory has now gained the equivalent of a Royal Warrant. The site now has a link from David Icke's website. ;)

Oh, I'm impressed.

Not.

(I googled on 'British Edda', and was equally impressed by the sites that I found then. The truth shall be told...

Sure.)

The Bristish Edda is a bit like The Golden Bough - a product of it's time which has since been superceded by more modern research (in essence). Except that the Edda is based on alot more supposition, and this is even more apparent nowadays.

..............and if you really want to read the British Edda, you won't find it at Amazon.

*EDIT* received from Kentigern 27.7.72
My intention was just to remove the link that I had posted. I would be grateful if you could do this.

My concern is that it should appear as my edit and not yours.

I would not want to create any further concern from MB members that the moderators are censoring posts.

kentigern

So, in line with kentigern's wishes, it is done.

Well that about wraps it up for me (and no suprise with the Ike connection).

Hands up all those in favour of closing this thread down (or removing it entirely)?

Why on earth would you want to do that Niles?

Well Aunty Beaky not only is it a waste of electrons throughly shredded by the members of this forum but is also (as 'Amanda' insists) a covert advertisement for Far-Right and Racist literature.

Not that it's really open to debate.

This thread is hereby closed!

I've fixed the links and the numerous instances of broken formatting and failed replies.

Thread re-opened.

Reminded me of something I posted on another thread - and that actually, I haven't done a cryptic crossword for ages (I still really miss Araucaria), and haven't sparked a weed for years:

I used to be a fairly obsessive cryptic crossworder and quite regularly would lapse into that state, which I believe is common to many crossword fans, of reading everything as if it were a crossword clue. It always struck me as odd that if the infamous Mr Kipper was the abductor/murderer of Suzy Lamplugh he would have chosen so memorable a (presumably false) name to make an appointment by. At some point I got into a rather stoned conversation with a friend about the impossibility of there being any such thing as the “perfect crime”. My argument being something along the lines that as long as a human being possessed DNA and as long as the forensic science relating to DNA kept advancing then no criminal could ever be sure of having got away with anything - therefore the perfect criminal would have no DNA - or some such wibble (if you want to pick holes in this argument, be my guest, just remember I was stoned at the time and make no subsequent claims as to its interest or worth).

Anyway this is the point when the crossword-head suddenly reared up out of nowhere and performed a perfect drop kick on blifter-head. KIDNAPPER - don’t want the DNA, cut around it, throw it away - KI(DNA)PPER - What are you left with? Ulp!

Okay, It’s just a bit of wordplay, and criminals who indulge in that kind of stuff tend to be confined to realms of crime fiction but the first time this struck me I have to admit it made me sit up straight just for a moment.

For what it's worth, I suspect Kipper was possibly a misreading of Kuyper, or something along those lines - which kind of spoils it.

I'm minded of this:

The truth is, if old Major Dover hadn’t dropped dead at Taunton races Jim would never have come to Thursgood’s at all. He came in mid- term without an interview, late May it was though no one would have thought it from the weather, employed through one of the shiftier agencies specialising in supply teachers for prep schools, to hold down old Dover’s teaching till someone suitable could be found. ‘A linguist,’ Thursgood told the common room, ‘a temporary measure,’ and brushed away his forelock in self-defence. ‘Priddo.’ He gave the spelling ‘ P- R- I- D’ – French was not Thursgood’s subject so he consulted the slip of paper – ‘ E- A- U- X, first name James. I think he’ll do us very well till July.’

I often think the mess we're in now - with weird conspiracy theories going mainstream - lizard people, resurgence of flat earthers, etc etc - all can be put down to the success of Dan Brown's books...

People want to find bizarre links and coincidences, and coded messages everywhere and get a rush from feeling like special sleuths when they "do the research"...

I do this all the time - I see patterns and interconnectedness absolutely everywhere, but I rarely see significance in what is really just a kind of data based pareidolia; it's just the way my brain works (and I have no complaints - it's actually quite entertaining).

Despite that penchant, I'm going to take a wild guess that most of the devoted conspiracists on here do not see me as a comrade in arms.

That's what they want you to think.

Your "data based pareidolia" is a great way to phrase it. Yes, human nature wants to see patterns in everything.

As someone who does believe in some conspiracy theories, I find it something of a comfort to believe in said conspiracies rather than to believe the people in positions of power (from all sides of the political spectrum) are as stupid as they pretend to be.

The 'Cock-Up' theory of history. :nods:

Believe me as someone who has worked in some major bureaucracies the idea that a wide ranging conspiracy could happen without someone spilling the beans is laughable
I recall a paper in which the very idea that a group of people could really keep such a conspiracy going was in inverse relation to the number of people involved, but despite searching my archive I can't find it...sorry. I had a bash on google scholar as well :)

This is why serious secrecy is implemented by compartmentalization.

But in general, yeah, suspect a cock-up covered by bureaucracy.

Yup, it's cock-ups compounded by privilege, compromise and arse-covering.

John Cannan, believed by many including the police to be the killer of Suzy Lamplugh, is due for release next year.

In the new TV documentary I've just watched it's mentioned that women Cannan was convicted of raping have panic buttons and even police protection, although he is still locked up. How terrified of him must they be?
He is a known absconder.

He is eligible for parole.

“…he did not become eligible for parole until October 2022, and he will be released only if the Parole Board rules that he is no longer a serious danger to the public.”

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Cannan#Prison_life

Also the Parole Board has to take into consideration allegations made against him, but not tested in court. This is because of the fiasco surrounding the almost-release of that other vile piece of shit, John Worboys.

As the police have taken the unprecedented step of naming Cannan as their only suspect in the Suzy Lamplugh murder, l don’t foresee Cannan ever breathing free air again.

(Plus, he was reported as being on his deathbed last year.)

It's quite shocking given the nature of his crimes that he was not given a whole life tariff, no woman is safe when he is freed
