YouTube, or themtube?
It's over for me now. Youtube has completely circumvented my adblocker and i cant watch anything sponsored.

Suggestions for the best alternatives greatly appreciated.

Rumble, Bitchute, Odysee, the list goes on. I won't say more as this is not the place for that.

The Rumble app, it must be said, is light-years ahead of what it was a few ago when I first tried (and abandoned) it. They seem to have started the overhaul by asking what annoys us about the YouTube app and improving on those (numerous) flaws.

I now use it to listen to archived Art Bell shows.

As to whether the broader content is to your liking...

It tends to be a bit politically niche—BitChute even more so.

Yes, that's a nice neutral term.

I wanted to put some markers on a map I have saved in 'my pictures'.

Normally, all I do is right click on the photo and then click 'edit with paint' which allows me to do so. Simple.

Now however, it is saying that I have to install an app for this, the option being 'look for an app in the microsoft store'.
Clicking on this then opens a new page and after a further 2 or 3 more clicks I can finally get to the 'edit paint section'.

So what used to take one click now takes 5 or 6 before I get back to 'browse files'.

Caspisce?

I'd like to change my avatar but each time I save a suitable jpeg image, I cannot then find it in the relevant folders/files (i.e. Downloads, Pictures & the like). I can locate said images using my pc's File Explorer feature, but still cannot find them when it comes to uploading the pix as new avatars. :(

With pictures that I want to export, like your avatar picture, I save them to the desktop. They're dead easy to then find.

Has anyone managed to create an app on meta's Threads platform? I'm experimenting with it and it's more than a little capricious.

I just installed the FT app on a Chromebook, but after displaying the FT logo, it just goes to a blank white page. Any ideas?

Sounds like a bad (interrupted/disrupted install)? Maybe worth doing a re-install it and see if that sorts it out. I had a similar thing happen when updating with a new install with 'LibreOffice' a week or two ago, icon replaced on screen, but it did nothing, the re-install worked second time around. Worth a try.
*P.S. Sometimes you can find an option to 'repair' if you check that out under 'apps installed,' and that can fix things quicker.

Found this Chromebook help online ~ might give you some more insight into finding the problem. . .
[*Extract from: Co-pilot.]

[Installing and using apps on a Chromebook can sometimes be tricky, but let’s troubleshoot the issue with the Financial Times (FT) app. Here are some steps you can try:
  1. Check Internet Connection: Ensure your Chromebook has a stable internet connection. Sometimes, app downloads fail due to network issues.
  2. Update Your Chromebook: Make sure your Chromebook is running the latest version of Chrome OS. To update:
    • Click on the system tray (bottom-right corner).
    • Select the gear icon (Settings).
    • Go to “About Chrome OS” and click “Check for updates.”
  3. Clear Cache and Data: If the FT app is installed but not opening, try clearing its cache and data:
    • Open the “Settings” app.
    • Go to “Apps” or “Apps & notifications.”
    • Find the FT app, click on it, and choose “Storage.”
    • Clear cache and data.
  4. Reinstall the FT App: If the app still doesn’t work, uninstall it and reinstall it from the Google Play Store:
    • Open the Play Store.
    • Search for “Financial Times” and install the app.
  5. Check Subscription: Remember that you’ll need a Standard Digital or Premium Digital subscription to access FT content using the app. If you’re not subscribed, the app won’t function properly.
  6. Use the Diagnostics App: Chromebooks have a Diagnostics app for troubleshooting. You can check hardware information and run tests. Here’s how:

"Hope this might give some extra help to find a solution:"

Did you get it sorted?

I've been watching a lot of YouTube recently. Does anyone have any explanation why some programmes are absolutely drowned out by the background music? Some of them are ordinary TV programmes (ie, not made by amateurs with resultant inept mixing techniques), and either the background music starts straight away or sometimes even half way through - what should be a quiet piece of music running underneath speech is so loud that I can hear someone talking but can't make out the words! Is it me/my TV, or down to some peculiar YouTube function?

It may be that those vids have been altered to avoid some kind of legal comeback, because they don't own the copyright.
I don't see the point when they do that.

l suspect not, as it seems to be the same with telly: Dialogue at 80dB, music at 100dB.

I'm used to the differences in volume on telly - this is where the background music is so emphasized that you literally can't hear the dialogue. Not that the dialogue is quieter than the music (well, it is) but it is literally completely drowned. I watched one YouTube video where I literally didn't realise there was supposed to be a voice over explaining things -I thought it was just a pretty video of scenery, but it was supposed to be about the history of an area. The voiceover was inaudible. I only realised at the end that I should have been hearing someone telling me things, not a musical soundtrack.

I had the same the other day with a programme.

And, two other things;

The volume continually going up and down so that you can't leave the remote for more than ten seconds and that drippy plonk plonk plink plink background music that everything has to have now.

Watched Meet the Ancestors last night and; no loud music, no drippy music (in fact no music at all) and I didn't have to touch the remote once for a hour.
Also no shaky camera.

Apart from some dodgy 1998 fashions, it was absolutely brilliant.

I only just got around to writing the letter today, still haven't posted it.

After 2 months of requesting a code/ access to my Facebook account the code request worked today!

Obviously I just had to write the letter!
