Tech Help (Beyond This Forum)

I’m thinking of spending a ton of money on a new laptop.
Question is... is i9 that much better than i7?

If you really can afford it, it sounds pretty powerful.
What do you want to do with it? Gaming?

I use a recent laptop (December 2017) with an i7 (i7-7500U) at work (software engineer) and it is perfectly adequate for my needs. A small caveat: the software I write isn't actually run on this machine itself but rather on a remote server, but I do use a couple of virtual containers for testing purposes using Docker. So all in all I would suggest that an i7 is perfectly reasonable for a reasonably heavy workload.

If you are looking at gaming then be warned that some people have had problems with i9 processors. You'll have to look into the specifics to see if they apply to your likely use cases.

Can anyone tell me where I can find some photographs of women without any clothes on on the internet? .. I've looked everywhere and, frankly, I'm at a bit of a loss?.

Here you go: a photograph of some clothes without any women, as requested.

Er, is that right?

...and finally, to flog this dead horse of a bad joke, and way off-topic but nearer to your neck of the woods, Swifty is this genuine magazine which the publisher, in a sudden fit of common sense in 2015, renamed to 'SJM'. Although that almost sounds a bit rude as well.

'Fortnightly issue' indeed.

What were they thinking? It really is a serious magazine about yer Anglian jazz scene.

How do you embed GIFs on here?

I know there might be some debate in the future over whether we can use them or not on the new forum and that the process over there might be different.

I was just curious as to how it's done.

Embedding or linking...
Go to a website or do an image search with (say) Google.
On a website, right-click on the image and click Copy image address.
In Google image search, click the image to make it big then right-click on the image and click Copy image address.
In your FTMB editing box, click the Image button and paste the link into the box that appears.
Click the Insert button.
The image should appear in the editing box.

Save .gif to your own computer.

Click the second blue button to the lower-right of a posting box: Upload a File

Browse to file on your computer and click open.

Wait for file to upload.

Click 'Full Image next to the thumbnail that appears.

Post.

This only works with .gif files, not .gifx files, unfortunately.

Thanks Myth, that was easy. Just a Paul Hollywood handshake I wanted to give to @James_H

I want to use it for high end video editing and the adobe Creative Cloud pro suite.

I’ve looked at the Dell XPS 15 - downside - i9 thermal throttling and a rumoured poor wifi card. i7 may actually be a better option.
Gigabyte Aero X - downside - gets really hot and needs opening up and thermal paste applied after purchase.
However, I may consider a new mac mini. OS I’m used to, Prores, ram upgradable to 64gb - downside - no monitor and weak graphics card (but plenty of ports to add an external).

Just basic ripped mp3s and downloaded videoes. There is some kind of basic command blocking it. I'll post more when I get time. Thanks

How do I decrease the size of a photo so I can post it? pretty please?

Use a bitmap editor?

Don't you have any built-in image app you can use to shrink it?
What format is it, and how large is it?

It's a .jpeg 206kb :)

what are the limits here?

It worked this time.... and no, I have no idea! But thank you :)

Not so much a problem, but an observation.

A few minutes ago I called up Google search from Firefox. and entered the acronym 'MGTOW'.

and it supplied half a dozen links (on the first page, there were more). so that was working ok.

Then I scrolled right down to the bottom of the page and found that Google had helpfully printed my home location. Accurate to about half a mile.

Hmmmm. I wonder.

So, I fired up the VPN (set the IP to Belgium) and did the same as above.

And Google blocked the search. I got this message.

Bearing in mind I was doing an inoccous search on a perfectly legit subject. Not looking for hard core granny porn or anything like that.

Yes, Big Brother really is watching you.

INT21.

They want to know who is googling MGTOW? Hmmm, interesting.
