Terror Alerts

Quake42 said:
A couple of incidents over the last few days:

- Westfield shopping centre (next to the Olympic Park) evacuated after a boomb scare

- Major terror alert near Luton airport - including, apparently, scrambling of military helicopters - after two individuals were spotted under the flight path with a range finder and ran off when challenged.

Very little media attention given to either, especially the second, which featured solely on Twitter and local websites until belatedly picked up by the Express this morning.

Coupled with the odd editorial decisions by BBC and ITV not to mention the recent London beheading in their nightly news bulletins, and an apparent media blackout on what seems to have been a big EDL march in Rotherham over the weekend, I'm wondering whether media organisations have been asked to play down stories which are likely to increase panic and/or tensions. Thoughts?

Really strange that the Luton Airport one is being downplayed. Maybe the security forces are following "a definite line of enquiry" and don't want to scare off the perpetrators.

Alternatively they may know that it was only plane spotters.

The Sheffield Telegraph say hundreds marched on the demo you mentioned. A previous march in May had 500 on it according to the Guardian but little MSM coverage in either case.

Not wanting to give them the oxygen of publicity? The lack of coverage seems to be a deliberate choice.

Yeah - Chinooks being scrambled on the mainland (if true) is pretty big news.

It does, doesn't it? And whilst not wanting to give unpleasant groups too much airtime may be understandable, newspapers and TV should report what is actually happening, not ignore it because it is awkward or unpleasant or doesn't fit a particular narrative.

Envelopes containing an unknown yellow powder have been sent to five consulates in the Turkish city of Istanbul, officials say. The US, Canadian, Belgian, German and French missions all received the packets, prompting security alerts.

Sixteen people who had been exposed to the powder were hospitalised as a precaution, the health ministry said. The government has despatched chemical, radioactive and nuclear specialists to investigate.

The Canadian consulate was closed for the day after one person was reportedly directly exposed to the powder. ...

Samples of Colman's Mustard? :)

What's the difference between a "radioactive" and a "nuclear" specialist then?

Not sure about Osterman, there was that cancer scare after all, but I'm pretty sure Bruce wasn't actually radioactive, he just absorbed a lot of it in the initial incident.

Peter Parker, on the other hand, was said to have had "radioactive blood", but that might just have been to make a good rhyme.

But, Peter wasn't a nuclear specialist. Osterman definitely was radioactive, that blue glow was supposedly, Cherenkov radiation, as opposed to, everyday ionized-air glow. He was a master of all things nuclear however and able to control his radioactivity at will.

Captain Atom, was originally a rocket technician who became radioactive and had to wear a special suit to contain his radioactivity. His powers made him a nuclear expert, but I've no idea what his present incarnation is capable of, since he has been rebooted so many times.

A wi-fi signal named "Al-Quida Free Terror Nettwork" (sic) has resulted in a long delay for passengers on a plane at Los Angeles airport.

A passenger alerted American Airlines cabin crew when his smartphone identified the network as one available nearby and police were notified.

After an investigation lasting several hours, police at the airport said no crime had been committed.

The flight from LA to London on Sunday was eventually rescheduled for Monday.

Soldiers with assault rifles in combat dress are helping to guard the entrance to Horse Guards Parade in central London's Whitehall. The presence of the troops comes as the US announced increased security at federal government buildings in Washington and other cities.

The move follows the shooting of a soldier in Canada last week.

Ceremonial soldiers of the Household Cavalry Regiment usually assume sentry duties at Horse Guards Parade but they have now been joined by soldiers in camouflage carrying guns. The entrance of the popular tourist attraction is where the daily Changing of the Guard ceremony takes place. ...

Trigger fingers are itchy, but this was a false alarm:

RAF jets intercept Latvian cargo plane over Kent

Two RAF jets scrambled to intercept a Latvian cargo plane created a sonic boom over Kent.
The Russian-made aircraft lost contact with air traffic controllers and was escorted to Stansted Airport by the pair of Typhoons.

Kent Police received several calls reporting a loud bang coming from the Dartford area at about 16:40 GMT.
An airport spokesman said police officers surrounded the aircraft after it landed at 17:15.
A blast was felt across the county, according to posts on Twitter.

The airport spokesman said surrounding the plane was standard procedure when communication had been lost with an aircraft.
He said officers were later stood down and the plane was continuing its journey.

An RAF spokesman said: "Typhoon aircraft were launched this afternoon from RAF Coningsby to intercept a civilian aircraft south of London which was causing concern to air traffic control authorities.
"The aircraft was safely escorted to London Stansted.
"To fulfil their quick reaction role the Typhoons were cleared to travel at supersonic speed, any noise disturbance as a result of this is regretted."

The RAF confirmed the aircraft was a Russian-made Antonov An-26.
It apologised if crews had "startled people" but added that jets only went supersonic over land when absolutely necessary.

Essex Police said three people on board, who were all Lithuanian, had been spoken to and it was established everything was in order.
The reason for the short loss of communication was a change in airspace jurisdiction, police said.
Officers said they were not investigating the incident.

Stansted said the plane was expected to leave the airport later but staff still had to organise a take-off slot and refuelling.

A spokeswoman for RAF-AVIA, the Latvian airline that operated the aircraft, said it had been on a routine flight to Birmingham from Italy when the pilots lost communication with air traffic control on entering UK airspace.
She said the technical reason behind the communication failure was still unclear and the company had not yet spoken to its crew.
The plane was carrying equipment for an automotive assembly line.

Jogger 'stable' after brushing against toxic amphibian

THE jogger who triggered David Cameron’s poison glands is being cared for at home by relatives.

28-year-old Dean Farley is bed-bound with delirium after brushing against the potentially deadly prime minister.

Biologist Emma Bradford said: “Cameron’s natural defence mechanism is a layer of toxin-tipped spines beneath his salmon-coloured epidermis. Unexpected contact causes them to momentarily protrude, delivering a dose of poison powerful enough to kill a bear.

“It’s a trait evolved by his toad-like ancestors in the Amazon basin, who lived in riverbank mud burrows until 15 years ago.”

Farley’s neighbour Wayne Hayes said: “He’s still numb all down his side and can see chittering needle-fanged creatures on the periphery of his vision.”

Security for the prime minister is to be reviewed, with a specially-modified Zorb sphere being constructed for public engagements. A small hole in the sphere will allow him to sign trade agreements and point his finger to emphasise things during speeches.

Bodyguard Nikki Hollis said: “People think Cameron’s security detail are there to protect him from the public but it’s the other way around.

“The consequences of him kissing a baby or shaking hands with a pensioner don’t bear thinking about.”

In deepest darkest Cornwall...

Hayle man arrested under Terrorism Act

A man has been arrested in Cornwall on suspicion of preparing for an act of terrorism.
The 26-year-old was arrested in Hayle on Monday night under section five of the Terrorism Act, Devon and Cornwall Police said.
Officers from the South East Counter Terrorism Unit (Sectu) - which is led by Thames Valley Police - were also involved in the pre-planned arrest.
Sectu confirmed the arrest was related to the ongoing conflict in Syria.

Superintendent Jim Pearce, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said: "I would like to reassure the community that this investigation should have very little impact on local residents.
He added the arrest "was not made in response to any immediate threat to public safety in Hayle".
"Our officers will continue to maintain a presence in the area, offering reassurance to the local community," he said.

The arrested man is being questioned at a station in the Devon and Cornwall force area.

Another Russian "airspace interloper".

Quote:
RAF Typhoons intercepted a Russian Bear bomber as it approached UK airspace on Friday, the second flypast by aircraft from Vladimir Putin’s air force in three days, the Ministry of Defence has said.

get ready to pick your sides folks.... !!

Just watched the local TV news. The arrest seems to be connected with a Balti restaurant in the Copperhouse area of Hayle. That's right on the main bus route through town - I wouldn't mind a quid for every time I've been past there!

There's a Police news briefing due to start soon in Bodmin, so we might know more then.

Officers from the South East Counter Terrorism Unit (Sectu) - which is led by Thames Valley Police - were also involved in the pre-planned arrest.
Sectu confirmed the arrest was related to the ongoing conflict in Syria.

The man, a Bangladeshi national who was arrested at the Balti King restaurant in Fore Street, is being questioned at a station in the Devon and Cornwall force area.

Supt Jim Pearce, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said: "I would like to reassure the community that this investigation should have very little impact on local residents."
The arrest "was not made in response to any immediate threat to public safety in Hayle", he added.
"Our officers will continue to maintain a presence in the area, offering reassurance to the local community," Supt Pearce said.
Searches have been ongoing at the scene throughout the day.

British counter-terrorism police have made a number of arrests linked to the conflict in Syria in recent weeks, including in Bedfordshire, Hampshire and London.
Sectu would not confirm whether the arrest in Hayle was linked to any other cases.

There were four fairly dramatic terror arrests yesterday in London and High Wycombe (again!). The international media is reporting that the plot was n attack on the Queen over the Remembrance weekend, See for example:

http://www.stuff.co.nz/world/europe/630 ... oiled.html

Only the Sun and the Mail amongst the UK media appear to have reported this.

Shocking if true.

Lordy! Killing the Queen at the Royal Albert Hall is super-Hitchcockian.

Perhaps a well-timed scream from Doris Day would have prevented the dastardly deed. (She is 90 - or 92, according to Wikipedia!) :)

I learnt of it only a few days ago, as the media had been abnormally silent, relegating the story in their back pages. Well, 'abnormally' isn't the right word, as their reaction is unsurprising in a case of such a police and judiciary failure, in addition it happened at the same time than another false flag attack, which took a disproportionate place in the news and worked as a smokescreen. However, the acquittal doesn't redeem French 'justice', as the trial should never have taken place, after it had become clear that the statement made by police officers, upon which the whole accusation of sabotage stood, was fraudulent. The agents have not been prosecuted, because of laws worthy of the worst of dictatorships. Presently, the culprits are still running, and could start again at any time. In any case, it should warn us against hasty accusations in matters of terrorist attacks made by authorities, even when they seem to be supported by many facts (we should not forget that they are in fact only alleged facts).

Leftwing 'anarchist terror cell' is fiction, French judges rule
Group known as Tarnac Nine cleared of sabotage plot after 10-year investigation and two-week trial

French judges have acquitted eight people accused of being part of an anarchist group that attempted to sabotage part of France’s high-speed rail network a decade ago, ruling that the group itself had been a “fiction”.

Defence lawyers had accused the government and authorities under the former rightwing president Nicolas Sarkozy of wrongly claiming there was a hotbed of leftwing anarchist terrorists in a sleepy village in central France and manipulating the case in order to look tough.

The notorious case, known as the Tarnac affair, began in November 2008 when more than a hundred French police officers swooped on the tiny rural village of Tarnac, arresting anti-capitalists who were living on a communal farm and running a village shop. In a vast media operation, the then rightwing government and French authorities alleged that the so-called Tarnac Nine were a cell of dangerous subversives intent on anarchist armed insurrection to overthrow the state.

At the time, villagers and the accused denied the charges, rights groups said the case was a misuse of anti-terrorism laws and lawyers said the case was deliberately being manipulated to make the government look tough against a supposed “enemy within”.

After 10 years of investigation — in which terrorist charges were dropped — and a three week trial, the two main accused – Julien Coupat, a business and sociology graduate, and his archeologist girlfriend, Yildune Lévy – were cleared of sabotage or belonging to any group.

“The hearing has allowed it to be demonstrated that the Tarnac group was a fiction,” the leading judge said.
Coupat and Lévy were found guilty of refusing to consent to a biological DNA test, but weren’t given a sentence. Of eight defendants — five men and three women, aged between 31 and 43 — the rest were also cleared of belonging to a subversive group. But one was convicted of handling stolen goods and attempting to falsify administrative documents.

“This is a humiliation for the anti-terrorism services of the time, for the magistrate who instructed the case, as well as for the anti-terrorist prosecutor,” said the lawyer Jérémie Assous, who defended several of those acquitted.

It emerged during the investigation that a former British police spy had infiltrated the group and made claims against them. French authorities did not pursue charges on those elements and Coupat had described the spy as “insignificant”.

Unless they'd been inside the complex itself, they prob. didn;t have any pics they couldn;t have got straight from google street view.

This incident is referenced in the vid below. I wonder what @maximus otter thinks of the training involved? Vid at link.

How Britain protects its nuclear material

The Civil Nuclear Constabulary are a highly specialised police force that guards Britain's radioactive stockpiles. BBC Security Correspondent, Frank Gardner, went inside the operation at the Sellafield nuclear site in Cumbria to find out how it's protected.

No real comment, as I was never authorised to carry firearms operationally.

The facility looks excellent; I was quite surprised to see that CNC don't use the old police "Elvis" target!

"Thang you very much..."

Weapons appear to be Heckler & Koch G36C fitted with ACOG optics; I'd assume that the pistol is the near-universal Glock 17. Unremarkable, except that most security forces now use AR-15 variants.

In short: It all seems good, vanilla training.

Ever used a Glock Maximus?

Oddly, no. l owned and used a variety of pistols and revolvers back in the days of freedom, but never a Glock.

l remember handling an early Glock 17 at a show at Bisley and thinking, “Euw! Plastic! These will never catch on.”

ln related news, never listen to my input on new products and their potential market share…
