Here's a newish YouTube video by Benn Jordan on the hum.
He's going with underground pipes.

Since the early 1960's, an increasing number of people have been hearing (and feeling) a sound causing everything from annoyance to psychosis to death. We have a deeply objective look at what could be causing it.

That was interesting, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would - in fact, by about 8 minutes in I realized I was completely suckered in. I thought it was well done, it felt well researched and on the face of it, I agree that it's probably down to several (probably quite common) things.

Not a hum but..

Mystery high-pitched sound is plaguing town and no one knows where it’s coming from

A small Derbyshire town is being plagued by a mystery high-pitched noise so loud a council has been called in to investigate.

The noise can be heard around the clock and some think it might be from a new industrial estate, others think it might be wind turbines.

Locals first started reporting the noise on Facebook on Friday, and it has continued ever since.
Ruth Tinkler posted on Spondon Community Group: ‘Does anyone actually know what the high-pitched buzzing noise is? I hear it most mornings. So annoying.’

Environment teams at Derby City Council have been called in to see if they can find the source.

A post on Spondon Councillors Facebook page reads: ‘We are investigating a noise issue that a few residents have been in touch with…

‘However, we have to date not been able to identify where it is coming from. It is a high-pitched noise that can be heard in the early morning and yesterday it was heard from the majority of the day.

‘Residents who live near the south of Spondon can hear it most and even residents in Borrowash have reported it.

‘It does sound like it could be coming from the commercial park or the Smart Parc. If anyone has any information that could help us, that would be fantastic.’

The Omagh Hum.

People in Omagh say they are fed up with a persistent humming, which is disrupting their sleep.

The night-time noise has been reported in a wide area of the County Tyrone town in recent weeks. Fermanagh and Omagh District Council's attempts to trace it have so far not been successful. Now, noise experts could be called in by the council as it struggles to find the source of the mystery hum.

Alliance Party councillor Stephen Donnelly said it was a serious problem for some residents. He was initially contacted by people in the Tamlaght Road area of Omagh in late October, but in the weeks since reports of the mystery noise have spread to other parts of the town.

Mr Donnelly said people "usually characterise it as a persistent buzz or hum" that was distinct from more common noise such as traffic.
Many people, he said, had reported problems sleeping because of the noise pollution.

Ho hum. Omagh mystery noise source tracked down but kept secret.

The source of a mystery humming sound which has plagued people living in Omagh may now have been identified – but is not being made public.

People in the County Tyrone town first started to report a persistent humming that was keeping them them awake in the second half of last year.

A Fermanagh and Omagh District Council investigation has now ended. John Boyle, the council’s director of community and wellbeing, said it had been “complex” but had been able to “hone in on a specific spot”.

Mr Boyle said the noise “wasn’t audible every night", and was linked to atmospheric conditions, making the investigation very difficult.

“We were able to hone in on a specific spot, and undertook a targeted screening exercise with a number of industrial businesses using equipment on a 24-hour basis," he said. “However, a particular premises became the focus, and environmental health officers engaged with the management. While nothing was absolutely concluded, the noise did cease in a sense, but we will keep the complaint open and under review over the next number of months."

I heard that story on Radio 4 yesterday and I was annoyed at the 'reveal' or rather the lack of reveal.

And if I was living in Omagh I'm pretty sure I'd be even more annoyed. I can't think why they would want to keep it secret, and surely in this day and age, it won't take long for the truth to come out. Or rumours masquerading as the truth...

Anything so close to a town can't be kept a secret forever. People will find out.
