Could it be the day production started at the local mint sauce factory?

Jack the Ripper, bored with "ripping whores", tried "tupping ewes"?

There was a claim made in Peter Greenaway's Drowning by Numbers that sheep are very sensitive to the tides.

This could be fiction!

"On Wednesday, 3rd of November of 2021, the sun will rise in London at 6:58:01 h and sunset will be at 16:30:01 h.

In the high tide and low tide chart, we can see that the first high tide will be at 0:06 h and the next high tide at 12:17 h. The first low tide will be at 6:22 h and the next low tide at 18:56 h."

I confess that I don't know how tides vary over the years. If only Rynner were here.

Were there reports of an unsual number of insects being about? I don't really know much about sheep, but I know that cattle and horses will panic if bot flies are about, and a moving swarm of some kind of insect might have the same effect on sheep.

North Ronaldsay sheep live on the seashore and so follow tides
