The Horror! The Horror! DHS at Cineworld.

This week we saw The Visit.

The Visit: An odd film, horror yes but mostly of the quotidian type. Also will likely elicit protests from senior citizen groups.

A single mom sends her two children on a visit to her estranged parents (she hasn't seen them for 15 years) in the hope that this will lead to a rapprochement. The old folk are odd, do strange things. But this could be explained by the quirks of the elderly and occasional dementia episodes. But then the grandfather assaults a man he believes is following him and the grandmother races around the house at night.

Effective but disturbing horror film. 7/10

Still going strong. Eleven of us went to see Green Room tonight. Great film, disturbing, very violent, not for the squeamish or faint-hearted. I'll do a full review in Horror Films later.

Went to see The Conjuring 2 last night. 7.5/10. Loved the Crooked Man and the Skeletal Nun. I'll do a fuller review later.
Hmmm, it's piddling rain, and I haven't been out of the house since Thursday. Might go and see this tonight. I remember the first movie being ok.

Last night the DHS went to see Hotel Artemis, Good SF gangster film rather than Horror with a nice vein of dark humour.

Tuesday, 31 July we're going to see Hotel Transylvania 3: A Monster Vacation.

Thursday, 30 August we will see FRNKNSTN on the Peacock Stage at The Abbey Theatre.

A modern mutation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. This daring adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic re-imagines Victor Frankenstein as a gene-splicing molecular biologist who creates human life from his own DNA, with catastrophic results. Speaking from a holding cell, Frankenstein is desperate to set the record straight.

"Night of the Living Dead" very low budget yet one of the best horror movie of all time IMO. Brings it all together damsels in destress, secondary personal fears and conflicts that arise and of course flesh eating zombies I always loved how the TV broadcast slowly brings the trapped folks up to date about a situation that quite obvious to them.[/QUOTE]

Interesting essay about NOTLD. I especially like:

" “The tradition of all the dead generations weighs like a nightmare on the brain of the living,” Marx wrote in The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Napoleon. He might have been describing Night of the Living Dead."

A stone cold classic. The only thing that takes away from it for me personally is the far from timeless TA DA DAAAA! musical score. I know it's blasphemy but I wouldn't mind watching it with a less Star Trek sounding score just the once because it's still an otherwise chilling film.

Ten from the DHS at Halloween - 40th Anniversary (1978 Original) tonight. Great to see it on the big screen. It was preceded by a documentary on the making of the film, mostly consisting of an interview with John Carpenter.
