Worthy of mention on this thread is the remarkable Clacton spear.
Discovered in sediment in Clacton-on-Sea in 1911, it is a 37cm length of yew wood, shaped to a point and, at the time of writing, is the oldest known worked wooden artefact on Earth.
It's on display in the Natural History Museum, where its age is given as 420,000 years.
This pre-dates the known evolution of Homo sapiens sapiens and there is debate as to whether the creator of the spear was a Neanderthal or Homo heidelbergensis.
