The great fire of London

As I've said elsewhere I went to an exhibition about this today. What interested me is how ideas of a conspiracy spread (mainly blaming the Catholics I believe) and gossip spreading as fast as the fire itself. It got me thinking that very little changes and we don't need the internet to be mad and nurotic.

(Personally I would have been suspicious that King Charles (II) had wanted the wood buildings replaces with stone for ages. Although to be fair it was for the very reason to stop such things as the fire. Also he was very pro-active with halting it and helping those left homeless.)
