I'm not sure if this should be in this forum or 'Religions and Cults'. It seems to straddle each forum, but if it needs to be moved, then hey!

I came across this group while reading a work colleagues copy of 'Marie Claire' magazine (honest...there was nothing else to read....).

It seems that this group is actually one very large family, supposedly between 1000 and 1500 strong. Inbreeding is par for the course as the whole idea is to keep the bloodline pure ('Marie Claire' says that the clan believe that they are descended from old JC himself), but this results in the birth of many deformed babies.

There are a few sites on the web about them, here's one

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingston_clan

which should give you some idea about them.

The 'Marie Claire' article also mentioned an even further out Mormon sect who apparently 'live out in the desert in a hollowed out rock'. No name of this sect was given but I guess they are somewhere in the Utah/California area. Does anyone have any information on them?

Must be honest, I'm amazed that groups like this exist. It's Deliverance in the desert!!! :?

Interesting - I haven't heard of them, but it raises another query - how many people are required to start a viable community which will not suffer from genetic problems related to inbreeding?

If, as I understand it, scientists believe that all living humans were descended from only seven (?) women, how come we haven't all turned into a world of simple-minded inbred oddities?

Any biologists/geneticists out there who could enlighten us?

I would think that the higher the number of non-related individuals in a community, the loger it lasts. For example, in theory, a viable community could start with just four non-related individuals, two men and two women. However, it might take only three generations before the first mutation would manifest itself.
It's been sooooo long since I did my genetics at school.

These things always seem like an excuse for the guys in charge to have sex with young girls. Bunch of nutters.

See, Im near Slough and Im so simple minded I cant figure out how to do a quote!!!!

The Big Brother production company? Boy bands?

My friend was talking about this. Basically, they all justified themselves by saying pretty much: "Well wouldn't you rather be missing an eye (or whatever) if you were in the family of Jesus?"

Ten former members of a Utah-based polygamist sect known as the Kingston Group are pursuing punitive damages against the organization after they say it subjected them to years of unpaid labor, sexual violence and human trafficking.

In a lawsuit filed earlier this month, the sect’s ex-members allege: “It is largely through … illegal marriage practices that the [Kingston Group] is able to unlawfully make girls and their children religious martyrs and traffic them for sexual and labor purposes.”

The lawsuit contains explicit details of how Kingston Group leaders – who also own and operate several businesses and schools in the suburbs of Utah’s capital, Salt Lake City – allegedly arrange incestuous and sometimes underage marriages between teenage girls and adult men with exalted status to produce hundreds of children.

The suit alleges episodes of rape aimed at forcing pregnancy, group members covering up years of sexual abuse and indoctrinating children in elementary school about plural marriage.
