There's a considerable amount of WTF-ness associated with this story, but I'll focus on the corpse mishandling aspect for now ...
Spiritual leader’s mummified remains found in Colorado home

Authorities have arrested several people after the mummified body of the leader of the spiritual group “Love Has Won” was found wrapped in a sleeping bag and decorated with Christmas lights in a southern Colorado home.

Amy Carlson, 45, who was known as “Mother God” by her followers, was found dead in a home in the tiny, rural town of Moffat on Wednesday, April 28, according to arrest affidavits for seven people, who are each charged with abuse of a corpse.

A follower told investigators he knew the woman as Lia Carlson ...

The follower, who has not been charged, told investigators he had taken in a group of people who needed a place to stay, and he found the body in a back bedroom when he returned home Wednesday following a trip to Denver. He reported the discovery to police and said he believed the group had transported Carlson’s body to his home from California. ...

“The mummified remains appeared to be set up in some type of shrine” and “have what appears to be glitter type makeup on around the eyes,” according to the affidavits. ...

The Saguache County coroner’s office has not said when Carlson died and has not released the cause or manner of death. ...

More on this story.

... None of this came as much of a surprise to Ms Carlson's family, who are almost certain about the identity of the body.

"We know she's not completely innocent in this whole situation, because she chose to join this cult," Ms Carlson's younger sister, Chelsea Renninger, told the BBC. "But at the same time, she doesn't deserve what happened to her in the end. No human being deserves that."
For years, Ms Renninger was sure her sister's leadership of Love Has Won would end in tragedy.

Little is known about the origins of Love Has Won, which is believed to have emerged in the late 2000s under a different guise. A follower encouraged Ms Carlson to join their movement, paving the way for her elevation to the head of Love Has Won. Its disciples do not appear to have a fixed set of beliefs. Instead, they practise and preach a fluid theology consisting of New Age philosophy, conspiracy theories, and messiah worship.

Their messiah was Ms Carlson, who was known as "Mother God". Her teachings were sacrosanct, and her claims were even more fantastical than her title. She was Jesus Christ in one of her 534 past lives, could cure cancer, and could speak to the spirit of the late actor Robin Williams, she would often claim. ...

To quote Buffy Summers: "Note to self, religion - freaky"

I read the Wikipedia page about this cult with some incredulity:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_Has_Won
It seems evident to me that the founder in question had uncritically swallowed every 'woo' idea ever invented.
And swallowed a shed-load of colloidal silver on the side.
If you have 20 minutes to spare then this blog entertainly fills in the background to Love_Has_Won and asks the question :

Is is legal to mummify your cult leader?

"In this Ask a Mortician, Caitlin tells the incredibly bizarre story of the Love Has Won cult, and the death of their belligerent, alcoholic, Trump-loving, Colloidal Silver-swillin' guru, "Mother God."
"Is it legal to keep the body of a loved one around after death and is it "corpse abuse" if you dress it up in Christmas tree lights and put glitter eye shadow on it?"

Are you thinking of El Dorado? They blinged him up when he was alive.

Not sure this is the best place for this, but my searches didn't turn up any threads I thought were more appropriate. I've been hesitant to post this stuff simply because I find it so revolting that I don't want to dwell on it. This morning, though, Ms Popper received a message from her sister wanting to know why she hadn't been told of it, and had to read about it in the Rolling Stone. I looked just now, and the Rolling Stone piece is about the mummified guru, which of course is featured in this thread. The rot goes much deeper though, so I'll post some links here.

The Guru Magazine is "home to the cutting edge cult reporting of investigative journalist Be Scofield. Her independent reporting has led to the exposing and shutting down of cults worldwide." She did a story that made it onto the Dr Phil show, for which she was stiffed and didn't even get an acknowledgement. So she started looking into Phil and found he was a real POS himself, a flaming hypocrite and complete fraud. Be Scofield has a lot of talent as an investigator and as a writer, plus a very strong stomach. I have donated money to the magazine.

Scofield has recently published a series of articles on the disappearance of Kristal Reisinger, a young and vulnerable seeker-after-the-truth who was easy prey to the twisted predators who did her in. The local sheriff appears to be either incompetent or corrupt (many rumors about that of course). I don't think dereliction of duty covers it. Maybe just plain old chickenshit, but it would take a mountain of that.

I must point out that I have not read much of the series about Kristal. It makes me want to puke, so it's easy to "stop reading for now" and go on to something decent. I did of course hear about it when she disappeared. I'm sure I have encountered some of these assholes, but I never did actually know anyone involved in this mess. I did have one encounter with "Officer Wayne" which did not impress me, but I've known all sorts of cops and he didn't strike me as anything other that a bit below average. I assumed he was at least doing his job in a reasonably competent way. I don't know what has become of any of the drug addled morons who survived the first couple of installments. I hope they are gone.

Crestone is a beautiful place, full of interesting people. Most of the residents and visitors are pleasant, generous, thoughtful people who watch out for one another but generally mind their own business. It does attract a lot of weirdos, and there is an insular attitude that's enabled by the remoteness of the place. The town is an old mining camp, literally at the end of the road. It's not on the way to anywhere, unless you hike or ride a horse up into the wilderness. Many people do this, of course, and some disappear. Most are found, eventually.

Cause of Death Revealed for Mummified Colorado ‘Cult’ Leader Found Without Eyes

Amy Carlson, the leader of a New Age sect known as Love Has Won, died due to a decline brought on by alcohol abuse, anorexia, and dosing colloidal silver, according to an autopsy report from the El Paso County Coroner’s Office in Colorado.

At a mere 75 lbs., Carlson had a tie-dye fleece shawl draped around her bony shoulders and a faux-fur scarf and bandana cradling the blue-gray skin around her neck, Russell wrote.

The 45-year-old wore two pairs of socks and donned a gold-colored headband encrusted with blue and green stones, several chains, and a pendant necklace, the report stated. A red scrunchie swept back her reddish-brown hair and she wore grey cotton pants with a “diaper containing red purge-type fluid,” the report states.

County coroner Tom Perrin told The Daily Beast in May that there was nothing to indicate her death was caused by foul play.

Well... all those Buddhist temples that preserve dead Abbots are in bother, then. As well as the Catholic churches and holy places that preserve the incorruptible remains of long-passed saints. In both cases the corpses are adorned in ornate robes and other decorations. Is it only illegal when done freelance?

Those are all historic examples. Would they’d be allowed now? And in the US?

In the UK we have Jeremy Bentham. That’s the only example I can think of, & I think it was at his request.

I think so - a shoulder blade from the 11th century can’t really be compared to mummifying or taxidermising [!] a whole body in the 21st century.

Truth - when archarologists find an expected body, the formalities are surprisingly minimal. If you someone doesn't understand what archaeological excavation does.

Inside the cult of Mother God: Followers of Amy Carlson's 'abusive' New Age sect lay bare group's harrowing descent into anarchy and violence

A New Age cult leader who called herself 'Mother God' is the subject of an eerie upcoming documentary about her conspiracy-driven spiritual sect, Love Has Won, and her devoted followers in Colorado.

The three-part HBO series Love Has Won: The Cult Of Mother God is set to explore the life and death of Amy Carlson, a former McDonald's manager who purported she was a divine being on a mission to save humanity.

In 2021, Carlson's mummified corpse was found troweled with makeup in a room filled with fairy lights in a Colorado home. She had died of anorexia, alcohol abuse, and chronic colloidal silver ingestion at age 45.

Love Has Won continues to attract devoted followers and peddle controversial products for hundreds of dollars.

Love Has Won: The Cult Of Mother was directed by Hannah Olson and features interviews with former members, as well as Carlson's family.

The first episode of the docuseries will premiere on November 13.
