A news report in today's Times on the apparently Satanic killing of sheep in the New Forrest, says that the 'Police Pagan Association, a specialist occult investigation squad' has been called in. Whoever knew such a 'squad' existed? Sounds worryingly like the paedophilia and social worker 'experts'.

It's ok. It's police officers who are Pagan. They will be in a position to counter any Christians who equate Pagans with Satanists.

Interestingly their blog uses the word 'Heathen'. Are Pagans and Heathens the same thing or different?

We used to know a very nice Pagan policeman. Lovely chap.
Here he is:

Not really, though some would claim that they are. "Heathens" usually follow the Nordic goods and are not Wiccans and as often "Wiccan" and "Pagan" are often used synonymously, Heathens tend to refer to themselves as separate. Wicca has a structure and hierarchy and initiations, whereas Heathens tend to be more informal.

In a word, yes, they are the same. "Pagan" derives from "pays", the french word for country, thus a person from the country. "Heathen" means person from the heath, i.e. much the same, but perhaps more wilderness and less rural. Both however are synonymous for people from isolated rural areas who still practice the "old ways". We have a lot of synonyms that are increasingly abusive for people from rural backwaters including:

Country-folk, Ruralites, Provincial, Rustic, Bucolic, Yokels, Good ol' boys, Hicks, Rednecks, Slack Jaws, Hayseed, Bushpig, Whiskey Tango, Bamma, Clodhopper, Bumpkin, Rube, Cornfed, Churl, Chawbacon, Boor, Backwoodsman, Peasant, Peon, Villain, Oaf, Culchie, Cornball, Hillbilly, Appleknocker, Yahoo, Hee-haw, Sharecropper, Poodoo, Clem, Hickster, Gray Dillers, Planters, Serfs.

Feel free to add any I have missed. Also feel free to punt this over to "Farmers" if you can be bothered.
