I don't suppose it would be your mobile phone getting a message? Mine makes a distinct "ping" noise when it happens.

Edit: It happens when the phone and computer are turned off, and the phone is at the side of me now and i hear the ting at the end of sofa

Get someone round to see if they hear it as well to make sure it's not just you. How often is the ping happening - is it regular intervals of minutes or completely random? If you hear it outside your house it could be a close neighbour with some sort of electronic device. If it's regular you could try tracking it down by moving - it'll get louder the closer you get.

On the other hand try ignoring it..

Its random, i had my friend round, she said she couldnt hear it, made me feel so much better as it is crystal clear, ignoring it is working to some extent, until i remember what im suppose to ignore

Good point, I've noticed my mobile making "phantom pings" occasionally - it pings but there are no messages.
I suspect that's a notification by an app. A lot of them set themselves up to notify you by default when you install them.

Could be someone commenting on a post you made on Facebook, or maybe something you're watching on a shopping app drops in price, or you have a direct debit going out of your bank, or any one of a million things! Maybe there's a new cam girl on your little porn app, for example!

You have to watch them apps! Go into Settings/Notifications if you're on Android.

If you're on Apple, well. I can't help you. No-one can!

I know it's irritating but try ignoring it. I have very sensitive hearing and frequently hear noises that others can't hear, yet they are real. About 15 years ago I began hearing faint music at around 4:30 am, very irritating as it seemed to be a tinkly rendition of Yankee Doodle. For some reason the timing was irregular, sometimes earlier sometimes later. My partner couldn't hear it. For months it woke me up between 4:30 and 7:00 and once heard it couldn't be unheard. I would lie there with this highly irritating tune playing and it would often grow so soft that I could only hear a few notes, I would grow convinced that it wasn't really there and that I was losing my mind, especially as it started and stopped somewhat unpredictability so I couldn't be sure it has stopped without listening for a few minutes.

Eventually the summer came and I had a larger window open and the tune was louder than ever. I got up and went into the back garden, in my dressing gown at 4:30 in the morning, hunting for the origin of this irritating tune. Sure enough it was louder outside but still frustratingly difficult to locate. I had developed a theory it might be the next door neighbour's kid's alarm clock as most often it would start around the same time and sure enough when I was in the garden the sound grew a little louder by the fence to their garden. But it didn't seem to be coming from the direction of their house.

Long story short - it's definitely an alarm clock, it actually comes from the house of my other neighbour and reflects off the fence. It's louder some mornings when he has his window open and it doesn't get changed for summer time as it goes off at 4:30 in summer but 5:30 in winter. I don't think my neighbour even knows that it goes off, I suspect it is in his daughter's bedroom who hasn't lived there for just over 15 years and he is somewhat deaf. I believe it stops when it reaches some automatic cut off, bit it is possible he does eventually hear it and turn it off when he is passing it. It's still going off daily 15 years later. In the winter when he's shut all his windows I rarely hear it, in the summer it quite often wakes me up on weekends still. I have never quite figured out how to broach the subject with him and since it only affects me - no other neighbours have mentioned it - I elect to ignore it as much as I can.

Damn laptop has gone down with a Blue Screen of Death error, and - despite using all of my minimal skills - l can’t sort it out. What the hell is Unexpected Kernel Mode Trap?

You probably found this.

1) Check all components for dust.
2) Update drivers.
3) Run: Windows Memory Diagnostics - if that says something's fucked, you'll have to replace RAM.

I managed to boot it up in Safe Mode, then ran System Restore twice, but both attempts failed.

It tells me that it’s gathering data to self-repair, but it just goes to 100% and sits there. I think it’s off to the computer doctor for Mr. Toshiba.

How do I fix the unexpected kernel mode trap?
Follow these steps to open your BIOS menu and disable Cache Memory to test if the 0x0000007F appears afterwards:
  1. Restart your computer.
  2. Press F2 or Del key enter BIOS Setup. Notice the key guide in the top-right corner.
  3. Go to the Advanced menu.
  4. Select Cache Memory.
  5. Make sure it's Disabled.
  6. Press F10 to Save & Exit.
  7. Choose Yes.

Thanks for the help, but I’ve tried this now and the cache memory option isn’t available in my Toshiba laptop’s BIOS.

I think I’m going to have to submit myself to the tender mercy of the computer shop pirates.

My 17 year old kitchen assistant is starting to turn into a bit of a twat, he spent half an hour doing about 5 minutes work last night hoping nobody would notice .. we noticed. Then he fucked off half an early leaving me to close down the place on my own after he'd been asked to stay with me by our head chef (which he questioned until I asked our head chef to repeat his request to the lad with the three of us in the room .. then he tried to say he hadn't questioned the request) ... fucking teenagers ... he clearly thinks I'm stupid. I'll be astonished if he doesn't throw a few sickies over Christmas ..

"Swifty mate, I know you've been doing this job for 35 years but .."
"32"
"32 years then but to be fair .."
"Chef, I'm just explaining to ****** here what you've told us both to do so he doesn't think I'm blagging him."
"Swifty's correct."

... he still fucked off early anyway. I've started referring to him as Ferris at work so I expect he'll be playing the victim card soon.

On a more cheerful note though, the other 17 year old who's just been promoted (and he deserves it) had the balls to ask for a pay rise to one of the owners in a room full of us last night :badge:

What happened to Geoffrey Smith? I used to like winding down to his programme on a Saturday night.

We have the same with the millennials/snowflakes in the construction industry. You give them jobs to do, they don’t do it, you bollock them for being absolute tossers, they complain to HR, I get bollocked for doing my job, they swan about smiling cos they got away with it...again!

He's been the only one from work (to be fair) who's contacted me on Facebook to send me a get well soon message .. I originally thought he was doing it for selfish reasons because he'd asked for and been granted a Saturday night off which would have left me my own on the busiest night .. when he found out I'm off sick and I offered to do that night anyway, he refused my help and is doing it so he's not a total cock it seems.

I still don't buy his story about that Saturday night off being a meal with his family though but you never know ..

.. it's why I've nicknamed him 'Ferris' after his last stunt he got away with .. fair play to the lad

.. if you see someone driving past in a Ferrari 250 GT California any time soon? .. it'll be him

At 56 I find the whole work world has changed and I don’t fit in anymore.
Roll on a £1M lottery win and I’m out of it!

I feel the same way and I'm about 10 years younger than you .. I need to start playing the lottery .. or continue to stop taking responsibilities on.

Financial guy visited yesterday( due to new government regulations).
He's only 55 and was saying that after his longtime secretary left recently he hired a 24 year old new one.
He said she's an absolute whiz with computers and had placed an ap so he can take pictures of information on his phone and send it straight to the office computer.
Makes me feel a bit better about being a dinosaur with all the new technology.
