The World's Oldest People (Documented; Verified)

She loved her sweets.

Lake City, Iowa — An Iowa woman who was believed to be the oldest living person in the U.S. has died at the age of 115.

Bessie Laurena Hendricks, of Lake City, died Tuesday at the Shady Oaks Care Center, according to Lampe & Powers Funeral Home in Lake City.

Hendricks celebrated her 115th birthday at the home on Nov. 7 and was listed last year by the Los Angeles-based Gerontology Research Group as the country's oldest living person. The organization also listed her at the time as the fourth-oldest person alive worldwide, the New York Post reports.

Born in 1907 in west-central Iowa's Calhoun County, Hendricks was alive to witness news of the sinking of the Titanic, World Wars I and II, the Great Depression and both the Spanish flu and COVID-19 pandemics. She was a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse there and the mother of five children, according to the Des Moines Register. She is survived by three of her children.

Hendricks said when she turned 110 that the secret to a long, successful life is "hard work," according to an article in The Fort Dodge Messenger cited by the Post. But her son revealed that she also "[loved] her sweets." ...

The Gerontology Research Group reports that Hendrick's death leaves 114-year-old Edie Ceccarelli of California as the country's oldest living person.

Sister André saw 27 French heads of state and both of her brothers returning alive from WW1.

The world's oldest person, French nun Lucile Randon, has died aged 118.

Ms Randon - who assumed the name Sister André when she became a nun in 1944 - died in her sleep at her nursing home in Toulon, France.

Born in 1904 in southern France, she lived through two world wars and dedicated much of her life to Catholicism.

"Only the good Lord knows" the secret of her longevity, she told reporters.

Born when Tour de France had only been staged once, Sister André also saw 27 French heads of state.

A spokesman from her nursing home, David Tavella, shared news of her death with reporters on Tuesday.

"There is great sadness but... it was her desire to join her beloved brother. For her, it's a liberation," Mr Tavella said.

Sister André was said to have a close relationship with her brothers. She once told reporters one of her fondest memories was their safe return from fighting at the end of World War One.

"It was rare," she recalled. "In families there were usually two dead rather than two alive".

Despite being blind and reliant on a wheelchair, Sister André cared for other elderly people - some of whom were much younger than herself.

It was not her first time in the record books. In 2021 she became the oldest person to recover from Covid-19.

In an interview last April with the AFP news agency, Sister André said: "People say that work kills, for me work kept me alive, I kept working until I was 108."

Still going strong at 109.

Ireland’s oldest person, Mairin Hughes, still knows how to enjoy life.

The “inspirational” 109 year old still does the crossword regularly, loves birdwatching and “does everything you’re supposed to do to keep well”.

On Monday, Ms Hughes, who was born in Belfast and spent part of her long life in Kerry, Cork and Dublin, celebrated her birthday with her community at Maryfield Nursing Home in Chapelizod, Dublin.

As she arrived in the lobby of the nursing home, sporting a navy blazer and pink scarf, she expressed surprise at her fellow residents and a family member waiting for her with balloons and a big cake.

She was presented with medals for each year she has lived as a centenarian, and read out a quote to the room that accompanied her latest medal, which she remarked was very true.

“You have lived through remarkable times in the history of Ireland and the world. You have witnessed remarkable changes, unimaginable at the time of your birth in 1914.

“Sin a bhfuil,” she added afterwards, Irish for that is all.

I’m the oldest woman in the world but I have no health problems.
A Spanish "Super Grandmother" is the oldest woman in the world, surviving Covid, a civil war, a deadly earthquake, and a major fire.

Incredibly, the 116-year-old has no health complications other than hearing and mobility issues - and scientists want to know how.

Maria Branyas, unlike most people her age, has no cardiovascular problems and can recall stories from the age of four with ease.

Researchers have now taken DNA samples from the American-born supercentenarian in a bid to discover groundbreaking secrets to disease and age - that could uncover the key to massively lengthening human life.

She previously shared cutting out "toxic people", avoiding "excess", and eating natural yoghurt every day were crucial ingredients in her living a long life.

30 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

Bridget Tierney, who is understood to have been the oldest woman in Ireland, has died aged 108.

Mrs Tierney, nee Reilly, of Drumgore, Loughduff, Co Cavan, died on Wednesday “peacefully in the tender care of her very devoted family, in her 109th year.”

She lived through two World Wars and three pandemics and was the second-oldest woman in Ireland up to last month when 109-year-old Kitty Jeffery, a native of Grenville in Co Cork, passed away at Cork University Hospital.

Bridget celebrated her 108th birthday on July 5th, 2023. At the time her son Tom told the Anglo Celt newspaper that her longevity could be attributed to a lifetime of "hard work".

He said that his mother was “happy as Larry” once she had her children around her. Tom stressed that his mother wasn’t one for sitting on her laurels

Someone I know is celebrating their 108th birthday tomorrow.

Fish and chips on a Friday keeps him going.

A great-grandfather from Merseyside has become the world's oldest living man.

John Tinniswood, who is 111 years and 223 days old, puts his longevity down to a fish and chips on a Friday and having hiked regularly when he was young.

Mr Tinniswood, who now lives in a care home in Southport, advises "exercising the mind" and "moderation".

The previous title-holder, Juan Vicente Pérez Mora of Venezuela, died aged 114 on Tuesday.

Mr Tinniswood, a Liverpool FC fan, was born in the city on 26 August 1912, and can recall standing on the terraces watching Billy Liddell and Everton's Dixie Dean.

He met his wife, Blodwen, during World War Two, and they married in 1942.
