The World's Oldest People (Documented; Verified)

114 and he's thinking of giving up smoking!

South African 'world's oldest man' wants to stop smoking
_101693054_oldie4.jpg

Image captionFredie Blom says there is no special secret to his longevity
Fredie Blom spent most of his life as a labourer - on a farm and in the construction industry - in apartheid South Africa but he might soon be recognised as the world's oldest man, as the BBC's Mohammed Allie reports from Cape Town.

Although he gave up drinking many years ago, Fredie Blom is still a regular smoker.

"Every day I still smoke two to three 'pills'," - local slang for tobacco tightly rolled into a cigarette-length piece of newspaper. "I use my own tobacco because I don't smoke cigarettes.

"The urge to smoke is so strong. Sometimes I tell myself I'm going to stop but it's just me lying to myself. My chest chases me to have a puff and I'm then forced to make a 'pill'.

"I blame the devil for that because he's so strong," he says with mischievous grin.

Celebrity status
The first thing that strikes one when meeting the centenarian is how remarkably healthy and solid he still looks.

A tall, well-built man, he walks unaided, if understandably slowly, and besides being a touch hard of hearing, he has absolutely no ailments.

The former farm worker, who turned 114 on 8 May, is said to be the oldest person still alive although this is yet to be verified by the Guinness World of Records.

The title was last held by a Jamaican woman, Violet Moss-Brown, until 15 September 2017 when she died at the age of 117.

Guinness World of Records says it is still consulting genealogists to confirm the next holders of the "world's oldest man and woman" titles. ...

I'm not sure I'd ever known there was a Guinness category for oldest couple based on combined age.

Japanese couple dubbed world's oldest by Guinness
A Japanese couple with a combined age of 208 years are celebrating their 80th wedding anniversary and a Guinness record for oldest living couple.

Guinness World Records announced Masao Matsumoto, 108, and Miyako Sonoda, 100, have been awarded the record for oldest living married couple by aggregate age, after they were confirmed to have a combined age of 208 years and 259 days on July 25.

The couple have five daughters ranging in age from 77 to 66 and13 grandchildren, and are expecting the birth of their 25th great-grandchild before the end of August.

Guinness said the oldest-ever married couple by aggregate age were Norwegians Karl Dolven and Gurdren Dolven, who had a combined age of 210 years, 1 month and 34 days when Gudrun died in 2004.

Britain’s oldest person has died, peacefully, at the age of 113.

Olive Evelyn Boar survived two world wars, saw 21 different prime ministers come and go, and was born before the first radio broadcast.

Ms Boar lived in a quiet life in Suffolk, and shunned all the attention she received upon becoming the nation’s oldest person earlier this year.

112, smoking cigars and drinking whiskey kept him going!

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Richard Overton, the nation’s oldest World War II veteran who was also believed to be the oldest living man in the U.S., died Thursday in Texas, a family member said. He was 112. The Army veteran had been hospitalized with pneumonia but was released on Christmas Eve, said Shirley Overton, whose husband was Richard’s cousin and his longtime caretaker. “They had done all they could,” she said. He died Thursday evening at a rehab facility in Austin, Texas, she said.

Richard Overton was in his 30s when he volunteered for the Army and was at Pearl Harbor just after the Japanese attack in 1941. He once said that one secret to his long life was smoking cigars and drinking whiskey, which he often was found doing on the porch of his Austin home.

They should fight it out to decide which of them is the oldest.

Britain's two oldest men are marking their 111th birthdays.

Alf Smith, from St Madoes, Perthshire, and Bob Weighton, from Alton, Hampshire, were both born on 29 March 1908.

Mr Weighton, who grew up in Hull, said he had requested not to have a birthday card from the Queen in order to save public funds.

The men have never met but have exchanged birthday cards in recent years. It is not known which of them was born first.

Not quite the oldest yet but the whiskey might get her there. She's a sprightly 111 year old: She lives on her own, reads every day and watches television

Her friends call her "Amazing Grace," a tribute to the fact that she’s 111, still has her wits about her and is in stellar health.

The secret to her longevity, she says, is quaffing a healthy slug of Scotch whisky every night before bed.

“She’s been doing it for 58 years,” says her 79-year-old daughter, Deidre McCarthy. "She swears by it."

Grace Jones celebrated her birthday this weekend with back-to-back parties.

“She had a wonderful party on Saturday, followed by a lovely party on Sunday,” her daughter said in a phone interview from her home in Britain.

McCarthy called her mother Monday to see how she was doing, expecting to hear the birthday girl was a little tired. ...

Scotland's oldest man, Alfred Smith, has died at the age of 111.

Mr Smith, known as Alf, celebrated his last birthday on 29 March, the same day as Britain's other oldest man, Robert Weighton. The former lorry driver and farmer, from St Madoes, Perthshire, died on Saturday night.

The SNP Perth and Kinross councillor tweeted: "Sad to hear this morning that Scotland's oldest man, Perth and Kinross based Alf Smith of St Madoes has passed way aged 111 years and 128 days.

Gasping for a fag.

The unofficial 'world's oldest man' has celebrated his 116th birthday in the midst of a global pandemic - more than a hundred years after the Spanish Flu killed his sister.

Centenarian Fredie Blom was born on May 8, 1904, in Adelaide near the Great Winterberg mountain range of South Africa's Eastern Cape province. In 1918, when he was 14 years old, his sister died from the deadly Spanish Flu and Mr Blom recalled having to sleep outside on a haystack to avoid getting the disease. It killed 300,000 people in the country.

Mr Blom said the worst thing about Covid-19 was the nationwide ban on cigarette sales. His neighbour, Gairoenesa Michael, revealed Mr Blom struggled to understand the coronavirus pandemic.

About South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa, Mr Blom said: 'He doesn't know what he's doing.' He said cigarettes were his only birthday wish this year.

Sadly Fredie has smoked his last fag.

A South African who was thought to be the oldest man in the world has died at the age of 116.

Fredie Blom's identity documents showed he was born in Eastern Cape province in May 1904, although that was never verified by Guinness World Records. When he was teenager, his entire family was wiped out by the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic. He went on to survive two world wars and apartheid.

Mr Blom told the BBC in 2018 that there was no special secret to his longevity.

"There's only one thing - it's the man above [God]. He's got all the power. I have nothing. I can drop over any time but He holds me," he said.

Mr Blom spent most of his life as a labourer - first on a farm and then in the construction industry - and only retired when he was in his 80s.
