Dumb & Deadly Gender Reveal Stunts

I have already read so many accidents and mishaps with gender reveal parties. It should be forbidden.
There've only been about half a dozen serious incidents connected to them out of the thousands that are held.
We only hear about the disasters because they're so newsworthy, in an ironic way.

Yes, my thoughts exactly!

lf we banned everything that might conceivably hurt someone under some unlikely combination of circumstances, be the risk never so tiny, existence would be a very drab affair.

Let’s not get too busy with the ban hammer, eh?

Here's a gender reveal blast that didn't kill anyone (for once ... ), but rattled multiple towns and caused property damage at a distance.
Explosion at gender reveal party rocks several towns

One New Hampshire family’s gender reveal party was such a blast that it rattled towns, set off reports of an earthquake, and could be heard from across the state line ...

Police in Kingston, a town not far from the Massachusetts border, received reports of a loud explosion Tuesday evening. They responded to Torromeo quarry where they found people who acknowledged holding a gender reveal party with explosives.

The source was Tannerite — 80 pounds (36 kilograms) of it, police said. The family thought the quarry would be the safest spot to blow up the explosive, which is typically sold over the counter as a target for firearms practice ...

Nearby residents said the blast rocked their homes. Some reported property damage ...

“We heard this god-awful blast,” Sara Taglieri, who lives in a home that abuts the quarry, told the television station. “It knocked pictures off our walls ... I’m all up for silliness and what not, but that was extreme.”

Taglieri’s husband, Matt, told the TV station that neighbors reported cracks in the foundation of their homes.

No injuries were reported, police said. ...

It's starting to look like a competition with these idiotic gender-reveal parties.
At first it was "Who can throw more money into shameless self-promotion to those who don't care".
Now it's "Who can make the biggest explosion and harm the most people in order to get into the news and You Tube memes."
Of course, the child at the center of the news item will grow up either a) with a sense of entitlement - "I was the baby who caused three people to burn to death!" - or b) a sense of guilt - "My parents were utterly without shame ... and I carry the guilt!"

UPDATE: Kingston police say approx. 80 pounds of Tannerite were used at that gender reveal party that caused a massive explosion that shook homes for miles. Man who detonated it has turned himself in to police and is cooperating. Police haven’t decided on charges. @UnionLeader

That is a serious amount of explosive. Highly irresponsible.

And I wonder when the first murder of a scan operator will occur? When they genuinely CANNOT ascertain the gender of the unborn baby and tell the prospective parents - who have already issued the invitations and built the bomb - that they will have to wait until a later scan?

Update:

The man responsible for the powerful New Hampshire gender reveal explosion last spring has pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct charges.
Man pleads guilty, fined $620 for explosion at gender reveal

A man has pleaded guilty to a disorderly conduct charge stemming from an explosive gender reveal party that was heard by nearby residents in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

As part of a plea deal reached Tuesday, Anthony Spinelli, of Kingston, was convicted and fined $620, of which $500 will be suspended for 12 months as long as he stays out out of trouble, according to court records.

Police in Kingston, a town not far from the Massachusetts state line, received reports in April of a loud explosion. They responded to a quarry, where people acknowledged holding a gender reveal party with explosives.

The explosive was 80 pounds (36 kilograms) of Tannerite, police said. ...

This Brazilian gender reveal stunt-fest included dyeing an entire waterfall. Now authorities are investigating in relation to environmental violations.
They dyed a waterfall for a gender reveal. An investigation followed.

These days, social media posts featuring pops of pink and blue are inescapable as some parents take on ever more lavish approaches to revealing the sex of their babies. But the past few years have shown that the over-the-top celebrations are prone to disaster — like, say, an accidental wildfire, a plane crash or a possible environmental crime. ...

Take this week’s gender-reveal party in Mato Grosso, a state in central Brazil. Like other such parties, the outdoor event on Sunday featured pink and blue balloons, a giant stork and trendy powder cannons that fired colored plumes into the air. Things were taken a step further, however: According to Brazilian authorities, the party dyed an entire waterfall.

It was a violation of Brazil’s federal environmental law, a spokesperson for Mato Grosso’s environment protection agency (SEMA) told The Washington Post. While an investigation will determine which penalties and fees apply, the unnamed family member behind the stunt is being charged with harming the environment, SEMA said. ...

Known as Cachoeira Queima-Pé, the 59-foot-tall waterfall is located in Tangará da Serra, an area with eco-tourism sites and copious waterfalls. ...

On Sunday, the usually milky waterfall suddenly turned a bright, Listerine-like shade of blue. Videos show the couple lovingly embrace as other guests cheered — a boy! But in the digital realm, other Brazilians were less than impressed. ...

The party in Brazil is far from the first gender reveal gone awry. Last year, a Southern California couple was charged with manslaughter after the smoke bomb they used sparked a massive wildfire. Since becoming a trend in 2008, gender-reveal parties have triggered an explosion, caused a plane crash and led to death. ...

- Yep, get right on that, while illegal logging turns the rain forest into a beach.
