The Chinese balloons seem to be a symptom of Chinese contempt for world opinion. They simply don't care that they have been sending huge spy balloons over other sovereign countries. The US was the same, way back in the 1950s; they send hundreds of spy balloons over Warsaw Pact territories, despite international treaties.

The smaller balloons are nothing more than a coincidence; hundreds of stray balloons pass over US territory every day; nearly all of them are launched by US citizens, although a few cross over from Mexico and Canada. No wonder the US Navy has been seeing unidentified objects for years - they almost certainly have nothing to do with aliens.

Yes, they did. The balloon was first spotted on Feb 1, the same day it entered Montana. If it remained in Montana for the next two days, then it was under observation the whole time. A decision to shoot it down over the sea was made at this time, so the US shot it down on Feb 4.

Curiously, the balloon seems to have stopped transmitting soon after the US defence department spotted it, so the period of loitering over Malmstrom does not seem to have sent any usable information to China.

If not a balloon, what did they fish out of the sea off the Carolina shore? This appears to be the wreckage of a high-level, large diameter balloon to me.

I think there gonna need a bigger boat looking at this photograph!

Leaked Pentagon docs show the shot-down Chinese spy balloon may have had a feature known as 'synthetic aperture radar' that can see through certain materials

A new trove of Pentagon documents leaked on Discord show it — and up to four other previously unknown spy balloons like it — could have had a feature known as "synthetic aperture radar" that can see through certain objects.

US intelligence agencies believed this because the balloon, which officials named Killeen-23 in an apparent reference to 1940s mobster Donald Killeen, was equipped with the ability to generate up to 10,000 watts of solar power — enough to power a typical home — which could support such abilities.

Synthetic aperture radar is the solution to the problem with real aperture radar, which cannot create high-resolution images without an impractically large antenna. SAR "synthesizes" a large antenna, but the concept is the same — it releases bursts of electromagnetic energy to an object on Earth, and a sensor then records the wavelength of energy it receives back.

Because SAR isn't taking photos and is instead using electromagnetic data to create a high-resolution image, the technology can "see" in the dark, as well as through clouds, smoke, soil and rain. It can also help with three-dimensional reconstructions, unlike cameras, which can only capture what is openly visible from above.

Is it just me that finds this all a bit sinister ... Too many cold war vibes, and with an added dash of ET plausibility to the paranoia.

Will be interesting to see how this develops ... or if it all quietly vanishes.

They say that like they are going for maximum scaremongering, synthetic aperture radar has been in use since the Vietnam war era, and the materials it sees through are clouds.

Secret Memo Raises More Questions About UFO Shootdowns Over Alaska, Canada

Following the shootdown of three unidentified objects in three days over Alaska , the Yukon and Lake Huronin February and the downing of a Chinese spy balloon off the coast of South Carolina a week earlier, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau received a secret memo laying out how the Canadian government was responding to the Feb. 11 Yukon incident. In addition, it stated the "full exploitation" of whatever the U.S. Air Force shot down over the waters of Alaska on Feb. 10 had "not yet been completed."

The memo stated that “the function, method of propulsion, or affiliation to any nation-state” of the unidentified object shot down by a U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor on Feb. 11 “remains unverified. It is unknown whether it poses an armed threat or has intelligence collection capabilities.”

The memo also pointed out that the Canadian Air Force (CAF) was leading an aviation search effort to find the downed object, there was scant hope that it would be found.

During the Feb. 11 press conference, Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand said the unknown object was a "small, cylindrical object" smaller than the Chinese spy balloon shot down off South Carolina on Feb. 4. The object was reportedly flying at 40,000 feet when it was shot down.

SAR can also see through vegetation, making it very useful for finding archaeological relics buried under forests (for instance in the Amazon). It could also see hidden infrastructure under trees, so does have some strategic use.

Don't know if this adds anything to what is already known.

The memo is not so much secret as it was obtained via FOIA. Seeing as it was released in fairly recent time in relation to the memo's date, I would believe there is not much of any differing info than already released on the whole topic.

Military tracks high-altitude balloon over western US

The U.S. military is tracking a high-altitude balloon over the Western United States, two U.S. officials confirmed on Friday.

It was spotted by U.S. military aircraft and determined to not be a threat.

The origin of this balloon and its purpose are not yet known, the two officials said.

The balloon is drifting east in the jet stream.

"In close coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) detected a small balloon at an altitude varying between 43,000-45,000 ft," North American Aerospace Defense Command Public Affairs told Fox News Digital. "The balloon was intercepted by NORAD fighters over Utah, who determined it was not maneuverable and did not present a threat to national security. NORAD will continue to track and monitor the balloon. The FAA also determined the balloon posed no hazard to flight safety. NORAD remains in close coordination with the FAA to ensure flight safety."

Déjà vu? Isn't this the same time last year when we had the balloon over North America kerfuffle?

 Edited, I just read the thread title. Boy, I'm quick today.

For whatever reason the Air Force said this latest balloon at 45,000 feet was the work of an hobbyist and put this event to bed really quick.

My question is how a hobbyist got this balloon to 45,000 feet ?

He/She, obviously had in-depth insight on how to achieve it.

Suspected spy balloon found off Alaska

A suspected spy balloon has been found by fishermen off the coast of Alaska, according to reports.

The commercial crew is expected to hand over the object to FBI agents for analysis when they dock over the weekend.

After discovering the object, the fishermen sent photographs to officials who found it shared enough similarities with foreign surveillance balloons to be investigated.

It comes one year after a Chinese spy balloon was shot down by a US fighter jet off the coast of South Carolina.

That balloon entered the US from Alaskan air space and crossed above sensitive military bases before being taken down by an F-22 Raptor.

It was later revealed to have been part of an extensive surveillance programme run by Beijing.
