UFOs: Seen One? Personal UFO Sightings (IHTM; Miscellaneous)

Which never affected Billy Meier, who always had a camera.

Now then, Edoda, what time of day was this? How far away would you say the silvery disc was? Was it in a rural or urban area?

Did you have your lights on?

BTW, have merged your thread with the general "sightings made by members" one.

When I was about 16 me and a mate saw something which looked like a silver barrage ballon constantly for about 30 seconds and when we looked back it had gone. It was just plain odd because it was amongst terraced houses and was about 15 / 20 feet long.

Many years later I was fooled by a weather baloon / radiosonde (silver balloon with a payload slung underneath) while hunting in a small valley.
It took several long seconds to realise what I was seeing was not paranormal.
I ahem... brought it down so I could take a look once once I realised what it was.

Strange thing is the weather balloon spooked me while the really odd 15 foot silver object didn't.

As this thread has come back to life, I'll take the opportunity to make my first post...

Back in 1967, there was a well publicised and fairly major U.F.O. "flap" in the Potteries area of Staffordshire.

Having all the usual schoolboy interest in Ufology (mostly gleaned from cheap American paperbacks) and being quite close to the Potteries, I pursuaded my pals to have a mini skywatch one evening in the hope we might spot something.

We (about five of us) were rewarded at about 9 p.m. by a very bright, slightly elongated light flying slowly from our right to left, and very low on the horizon, and at a fair distance away - although it's hard to estimate at night. Through binoculars, the "light" actually appeared to consist of three lights, a large central one being bracketed by smaller ones with a very slight, dark gap between them, i.e. in effect a cigar shape.

We were on a small estate so it wasn't too long before the light disappeared from view behind a pair of semis opposite. We thought we'd lost it until we all saw it again (or maybe it was another light?) rapidly accelerating away from us up into the night sky, from behind the same pair of houses.

What impressed me about this spectacle was the rate at which the apparent size of the light diminished as it climbed into the sky and also the very obvious rate of acceleration as it did so, i.e. it just got faster and faster like nothing would stop it. It shrank to a speck, then disappeared altogether in a matter of a second or two. There was no sound during the entire period of the sighting. (Edit - while re-reading this prior to posting, I've remembered that I thought I saw a second light detach itself from the main one just prior to it disappearing altogether - this light did a sort of zig-zag manouevre before it too vanished. I think I was alone in noticing this). The conditions were clear, with many stars appearing as the night grew darker. There were no clouds in the area of sky that the light vanished in.

The following year, two Staffordshire astronomers published a book about the Potteries flap - Roger Stanway and Anthony Pace. It contained a report from the same general location, on the same date, albeit much earlier in the evening, of a similarly cigar shaped object. This spurred me on to write up our sighting and forward it on to the authors, but I never heard back from them, and that was pretty much the end of it.

Now, looking back on it over nearly 40 years, it seems a fairly logical explanation that the initial object - bright lights, low on the horizon and apparently moving slowly - were actually the landing lights of an aeroplane in the pattern at Manchester Airport (it was in the right general direction). As this was the sixties and foreign holidays were gaining in popularity, there must have been a large increase in night flying from what was then referred to as Ringway, and perhaps we weren't as used to recognising landing lights as we are now. (Often nowadays, while driving northwards up the M6 through South Cheshire/North Staffs I see landing lights in the sky around Manchester and they often seem to hover or move very slowly, and sometimes, like when the aeroplane turns away, they disappear almost instantly).

But I remain puzzled by the behaviour of the light that accelerated up into the night sky. I have never witnessed such a performance from another aircraft, and certainly not any civilian type that would be flying out of Ringway. To use the kind of phrase you read in so many reports, it just shot off and disappeared in (almost) the blink of an eye.

I also witnessed something I can only describe as a Foo Fighter, about ten years ago. I'll write that one up if there is any interest.

Daft question - of course there's interest. Tell us everything!

Great tale, BTW, camper, and nice to see someone try to rationalise their experience after so much time. Nicer still to find even a small part of the sighting that you couldn't explain...

O.K. Incident No. 2.

This goes back maybe ten years. It was sometime in the mid to late '90s and I was covering office work for a colleague on holiday. I based myself in his office in Dukinfield which had a good view of airliners arriving at Manchester.

I had left my desk to get a cup of coffee from the kitchen, but paused to watch a Boeing 737 passing at fairly low altitude over the town. I then noticed it appeared to have a very small, bright ball of light formating just a few feet out from it's tail fin (port side, nearest to me). "Bright ball of light" as in sunlight reflecting off a highly polished metal surface - it was a sunny day with only small amounts of cloud. The ball followed in perfect formation for a while, then it edged forward a few feet before performing a sort of barrel roll around the aircraft's rear fuselage and shooting off in the opposite direction and out of my line of sight.

I've pinched a suitable photo off the net and have attempted to give some idea of what I saw. The actual B737 had not at that point lowered it's undercarriage. It was approaching MIA from the North and was turning over Duki to line up on the final approach. I hope this link works for you:

DukiFooFighter.jpg

I thought to myself "Oh, you don't see that everyday", got the coffee and went back to work.

I told my colleague about what he'd missed, and he must have decided to carry out some research. He later sent me a few pages photocopied from a book by Jenny Randles, describing several very similar events, some of which were also in the North West. In fact one, witnessed by Jenny Randles herself, was formating on the tail of another airliner inbound to Manchester. This was years before my sighting, but what a co-incidence. I wonder if these things make a habit of it?!

Thanks, it's years since I saw that video.

It was quite a bit smaller than the "blip" in the video, and very bright. It's movement was smooth and continuous, with none of the jerking you see in the vid.

My photo may even exaggerate the diameter of the manoeuvre slightly, i.e. it may have been closer to the fuselage as it passed around it.

I saw a 'UFO' when I was a teenager and I've never figured out just what it was. In about 1989/90, I was being driven home from school and as we drove along a stretch of road that had open moorland/farmland either side, I became aware of something keeping pace with us above the fields to my right. It was a flat, elongated white shape with a dark line bisecting it horizontally and as it was a bright day, I interpreted the shape as a small aircraft flying very low (the dark area being a shadow cast by its wings). As I watched it, a small row of terraced houses temporarily blocked my view and when it didn't reappear on the other side, I turned to look back and saw that not only was the object now stationary, but it had rotated onto its side, revealing itself as a white disc with a black rim. Like I say, I've no idea what it was, but the lead story in the following day's Manchester Evening News related how a local ambulance crew had reported being buzzed by a UFO the night before...

A couple of friends of mine had a fleeting glimpse of a silver sphere as they were walking together besides a busy main road one afternoon. It was hanging motionless in the air and looked as if it was fairly low - although they couldn't really judge its size and distance properly during the few moments they had it in view.

They walked underneath an overhanging tree which momentarily obscured the sphere from sight, and when they had a clear view again the thing had vanished.

One of them tends to see odd things all the time, but the other - the one who actually first noticed the sphere - is very cynical about anything remotely 'Fortean' and is the last person you'd expect to see a UFO.

Hardly a dramatic sighting of course, but intriguing in its own small way.

Hello everybody
this is my first post, i'm a long time lurker as they say.

This is the account of a personal sighting I had of, for want of a better term UFO,
basically I was 13 years old and I was up late to see New Years Eve 82/83 in.
I was sat in my parents lounge on the floor watching television
(my parents were in the kitchen making drinks or something, and my younger brother was in bed)
at around 11:45pm, I happened to look out of the lounge window as this is next to the television
as I said I was on the floor, as I glanced out I froze in complete terror unable to move at what I saw.
I would describe it as a giant dark oblong/rectangular object with lights (red, blue, white)
along the front and side, It was moving slowly at cloud level and I watched it for a few seconds
(seemed like an eternity) as it drifted out of view into the thick clouds. I have never ever felt fear like that and could not move from the spot for another minute, I truly know what it is like to be a rabbit in the headlights.
I estimate the craft (if thats what it was) to be the size of several aircraft carriers, maybe bigger.
I told my parents when they came back in the room, but they just brushed it off as nonsense
(they have since started to believe me more).
When I saw the object I had not drank or smoked anything (not that either have that effect in my experience)
I was wide awake and not in anything approaching a 'dream state', I can only assure you this thing was a s real
and scary as anything I have seen before or since.
I would also like to say that with regard to other sightings posted on this sight (A recent new years one springs to mind) I for one was not in any state to draw/photograph my sighting as all rational thought went out the window
and I froze in terror as described ( bare this in mind when assesing peoples reactions to sightings).

At the time of the sighting I had not heard of any such objects and my model of a ufo if I had one would have been a disc/saucer. Recently though I have read about a few, there was a case or two described in the FT ufo pages.
These were put down as mid air refueling of two cold war recon aircraft, I can only say this was NOT what I saw.
If someone can remind me of the FT issue with these in i'd appreciate it.

I myself am still suspicious of a lot sightings/cases and the whole ufo culture but what I saw will stay with me for the rest of my life or until I get alzheimer's.

The sighting occured in south derbyshire near nottingham, the eastmidlands airport is near by, but this was definately not an aeroplane (i was very accustommend to see them coming and going).

Thanks and sorry about any bad spelling or grammar.

ps I have a couple of other sightings to report (all in derbyshire- weird place it seems)
my parents saw a large glowing orange ball, bobbing up and down while driving in the countryside at dusk
(no it wasn't the sun) my father is a very down to earth and rational engineer, he worked at rolls royce (aero-engines) and hawker sidley, and went to airshows saw blackbird etc. and was basically familliar with aircraft, and it still puzzled him.

An old girlfriend and a pal saw a weird triangular thing while walking back from college in the late 80s,
It was apparently seen by alot of derby people including police. Anyway she saw a piece in a local newspaper about
it with the telephone number of a local 'ufo researcher', she rang him up and he came round and tried to molest her practically - so be warned, there's nutters in them ufo hills!

I've got a few other anecdotes, but i'll post those later as i'm knackerd.

I can assure you i'm totally sincere in everything i've posted, and not potty but very curious!

Thanks for your time, comments will be welcomed.

Have you ever really thought about why you became so fearful during this episode? It seems to me that this is not a natural reaction. Now, if I saw a guy outside the window with a chainsaw, fear might be an appropriate response. But a big rectangle with lights on it? Not so much.

Forget for a moment what you saw and concentrate on your perception and reaction to it. Is this at all typical of your behavior in a lucid, waking state? I am not suggesting you were dreaming - just trying to get a baseline for how you usually react to new experiences.

S

I was 13 and saw something I immediately new was strange, it wasn't some weird lights
but a very concrete object. If I saw it now I would probably not be as scared.
I think fear is a natural human reaction to something that falls way off 'normal' experience, it's a safety
mechanism. I don't now have a fearful position to this phenomenon, I just wanted to potray the state of mind
ie shock that witness may find themselves in. Often people ask why witnesses don't take photos at the time of the sighting, I just wnted to potray one of many possible reactions. I think the phrase "new experience' does not adaquetly describe what I felt at the time, I think future/culture shock is better. Sorry if I come across as fearful it was exciting aswell.
I'm not into militarising space for example (sdi) out of fear.

i saw something similiar last year during a mini flap in my town, a giant object floating over the buildings with lights on the edges, was there any noises afterwards as mine was accompanied shortly afters by one of the strangest things i have ever heard.

Hello :) I looked in the "It Happened to Me" folder but I couldn't find a thread to put this post in, and I didn't want to make a new thread, so...

Anyway, here's my story:

Winter 1989. I (12, at the time) was with mom. We were heading north on I-75 between Dayton and Sidney, Ohio, on an absolutely clear night. There isn't much between Sidney & Dayton aside from a few spaced out town and lots of nothing. It's a boring drive.

It was clear (a very good night for star gazing), but then this... thick low cloud cover or high-level fog suddenly came rolling in. Clear as far as they eye could see one second, cloudy the next.

I ask my mom if it was supposed to snow.
"I don't... think so?...", she replied.
The we saw the light.

7 lights in total, straight up at 1 O'Clock from our car, like a cross.

.....v
.....O

O...O...O

.....O

.....O

The lights on the arm were blue, the "v" was some sort of whirling white light at what I assumed was the head of the craft, the light below the "v", the "tail" light and the light next to it were yellow were yellow, and the light in the middle was red.

I really don't know how to explain it, but it was like this craft just sat, unmoving, directly atop the cloud/fog cover. I was staring out the car window at the cloud/fog cover and the lights slowly showed up, stayed for a bit, then faded out (or maybe went up higher?) so I could no longer see these lights through the thick cloud/fog.

Then, this think cloud/fog cover went away.
Clear skies->suddenly cloudy->weird lights appear->lights go away->clouds go away

My mom saw it too & was just as baffled by it as I was and there were other cars out that night on I-75 so some other people also must've seen it, but there was never any mention of this strange sighting in any of the major or minor newspapers of the area and nothing on the local news broadcasts and I've never found anyone else who witnessed the same thing.

Years later, I'd learn that Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton is supposedly the new Area 51, but I don't know. Maybe it was an alien aircraft or (more likely?) it was some new military airplane technology, but what? Some sort of cloud-making, cloud-cloaking military airplane?

"Shortly therreafter there was a very strange noise like speeded up seagulls mixed with a kazoo that i looked out various windows to try to locate the source with no luck."

Could it have been a tiny helicopter (i.e. a UAV)?

Escorted Egg?

Wow! Thats some pretty amazing sightings! I've just begun to enter my 2 UFO experiences onto the Forum, this being my second. My first was when I was about 13 years old (I'm 30 now !!). Me and 2 friends we're walking home from school, and we were just leaving the grounds so the time would of been around 3.30-ish, when we heard some jets flying overhead. We all looked up to see a silver egg being chased or escorted by 2 white fighter jets!! We all agreed what we'd seen and just stood there in amazement. I've always wondered if they were chasing the object or escorting it from the vicinity?!?!

Hello to all. Not sure what the protocols are for posting as this is my very first time. I just wanted to tell some people, who seem to be interested in this type of thing about what I saw. I was driving on the main road between Aberdeen and Inverness a few weeks ago. I was on my way to a call out for a hurry up job on a rig near Invergordon and it was about 1am, so it was quite dark. I've done this run loads of times so I know the road well. As I got past Elgin I realised I was bursting for a pee, and I'd past the only 24 hour garage a few miles back. I knew theres a big layby used by trucks, so I thought I'd pull in there and do the needful. Not nice but theres no toilets open around there that I've found.
I was slowing down to pull in when I see two lights, one red and one white side by side. I figured there was a truck in the layby. The thing is they are high up, like at treeline height and I'm thinking thats strange, must be one helluva big truck. I start to make my turn in and as I look to the side, I realise the lights are moving sideways relative to me. the way they moved it was as if they were fixed to something spinning pretty slow. At this point my toilet worries just about moved round the back so to speak and I didn't hang about, Just did a rapid U turn and carried on up the road. The hairs on my neck were standing I got such a fright.
The problem is that everyone I have told, and I only told a couple of close friends and family, have tried to convince me I was watching a big lorry turning in the car park. But the problem is the driver would have had no headlights on or even sidelights low down where you'd expect them to be, and turning without lights in that layby would be just about impossible. I know trucks have lights placed high up on trailers, but when I went back in daylight, a couple of days later, judging by the height of the trees, the lights must have been over 50 feet off the ground. There have been big rigs in the layby and the top of the container or trailers never get anywhere close to the height these lights were. The lights were red and white, so my brother who used to drive trucks reckons that one of the red lenses has broken, so it showed a white light.
My kids came with me on a run one day and of course I had told them about this. They responded by doing the music from the X files as we passed the layby.
I'm not sure what I saw. I am certain it could not be a truck. If it was, then it was the biggest freakin truck I've ever seen at least in height. My mate says it was maybe something from one of the RAF bases, as theres 2 within a few miles. But there was no sound like a helicopter would make, and no way was it a fixed wing plane as it was clearly stationary in, or rather over the layby.

My first thought was "helicopter", but then you said you couldn't hear any aircraft noise. On the other hand, could the noise of a helicopter be drowned out by the sound of your engine?

Alternatively, if it was windy, could the noise be taken away by a strong breeze? Or maybe a combination of the two?

Hello,i am interested in this, got one very much alike to your sighting, tell me what your gut feeling was at the moment you saw the lights what you thought it was at first all the thoughts you had how long this event took and where did it go what happened to lights how big where they time and date etc.e-mail me if you want to talk more,or just post it here.

Hey friend never looked at like that,we are from Scotland and it was a offer to help in anyway we can,not every one wants to talk openly on the forms and if he wanted us to do a investigation then the option is there.

If it was a helicopter, and was flying that low, would there be enough downdraft to be felt? I know I have been near a relatively small air ambulance helicopter when it landed on the road near the scene of a serious accident I attended at. Even in the car and at a distance of 25 to 30 metres, the noise alone was impressive.

Then there's the trees. If this thing is a chopper, would they want to fly that close to trees and at night? I know they use night vision, but trees and helicopters are a bad mix. I'd be very curious to know the location as I drive this road on an almost daily basis. The RAF bases referred to will be Kinloss and Lossiemouth. Kinloss has Nimrods, plus a few associated fixed wing trainers so not much chance of them being that low, while Lossie is currently Tornados and Search & Rescue squadron whose helicopters would be a possibility. However as they use Sea Kings, I can't imagine one of them being that low and not being heard. The noise they make is really impressive when at low altitude or when landing/taking off.

I also found this from the nearly local media. This is a bit to the south, maybe 25 miles? Not too far though. Can you say date? I presume you have worksheet etc

and this

This is an older sighting

http://www.northern-times.co.uk/news/fu ... laims.html

Unfortunately there is also a local supplier of damned lanterns. I got caught out with them one night when a birthday party at a nearby hotel ended with the release of a couple of dozen lanterns. It looked like an armada sailing across the sky.

Could we get any pictures uploaded from the spot the lights where.

I checked my worksheet and I booked the van out at 10pm on the 22nd April, so it was just about 1am on the 23rd. I've no idea when I'll be next up there. Plus if I have work buddies with me, theirs no way I'll stop for photos. I'd get slaughtered at work if I even mentioned this. Sorry. But if I was alone I would stop no worries.
Ginando. I see what you mean about helicopters. I see them all the time at heliport at Aberdeen when I was going offshore. If it was a chopper, I'd have heard it, and they have str obe lights. This just had 2 lights maybe 10 feet apart, but hard to say cause I wasn't waiting. The more I think about it, your right about the downdraft. That wind would knock you off youre feet and I would've heard something. The vans a Mercedes and its not even a year old so its not noisey.
I took this off google map. it shows the place http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&q=a ... 9&t=h&z=16 and this is a closeup
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&q=a ... 5&t=h&z=18

Theres a white van in a parking bay in the picture and thats where the lights were. As I come from the east I saw the lights as I passed the trees to the east of where that parked van is and the lights showing white nearest me and red furthest. But as I start to turn in I can see the lights facing me and the red lights at the left white at right. so if its the same lights the things turned. I'm slowing down and watching and they were moving. No doubt about it, so I did a quick Carlos fandango and went back onto the main road. I must've checked my mirrors till they were worn out. Better go. Girlfriend shouting for dinner. Not sure what else to tell you. Thats it.

Ok i like this sighting, could you tell us the size of the lights, like at arms lenth holding in your hand would they be 10p 50p tennis ball football or bigger in size,or smaller than 10p.
