This could be fuel for some very way-out conspiracy theories, I'm thinking...

"A former Pakistani diplomat has told the BBC that the US was planning military action against Osama Bin Laden and the Taleban even before last week's attacks."

Possibilities:
* Just a coincidence (?)
* Pakistani diplomat quoted is making the whole thing up for political reasons (to stir up resistance to American military stationing in Pakistan)
* Bin Laden got wind of the operation and decided to launch a preemptive strike

More lunatic possibilities(!):
* The US knew about the attacks but there was a deliberate policy decision to let them happen (see the other story I posted)
* Some faction of the US government was behind the attacks(!)

I'm sure the likes of David Icke could have a field day with this.
 
But didn't Clinton try and bomb him too and he just hid?

There's some stuff on ABC's News pages about the FBI investigating suspicious domain registrations in the months before the attacks. Names like http://www.pearlharborinmanhattan.com, and so forth. It's been suggested they might have been used after for propaganda purposes, etc.

Seems to me more likely that they're innocent 'though misguided registrations. Still, I wouldn't want the FBI to come knocking in the current climate...

As noted elsewhere, there is no evidence for the domain names story. The FBI officially denies it, and so do Network Solutions, who would be the logical choice to subpoena data from.
 
In case anybody is still following this thread, I read yesterday in the Daily Hate Mail that GW Bush's first job after Harvard business school (if you believe he got through that on his wits alone, you'll believe anything) was to team up with a certain Salem bin Laden in the creation of a texan oil company. Yes, that's Salem bin Laden! Older brother of Osama, also heir to a small fortune after the death of their father (in a plane crash in 1968 or 66), Salem died in a plane crash in 1983.

Keep it in the family? Who knows, but if he knew Salem (presumable very well) he knew of Osama (if only by name) and presumably, so did Daddy!

Strangely, I'm finding it hard to find an on-line article about it, but it gets a brief mention in the Guardian. http://www.guardian.co.uk search for 'Salem bin Laden'
