I've just watched this and it is a very odd film indeed - basically the spiral (uzumaki is Japanese for spiral) starts taking over this town with some very strange deaths and weirdness unfolding. The implication being that some terrible evil force is stirring and warping people's minds and reality itself (although nothing is ever explicitly explained or resolved which is a nice touch). All beautifully shot in that washed out grey/green you often see in Japanese films.

I don't think I'll ever look at a spiral in quite the same way ;)

The comments on it do seem to vary and a consistent theme seems to be that if you've read the manga it was based on then the film is a disappointment but if you watch the film first then you enjoy it.

Anyone else seen it?

Don't know how I managed to miss this thread before - was listening to Do As Infinity this morning on my jambox and Raven, the credits track to Uzumaki turned up so I thought I 'd do a search.

It really is a wicked film and stands up to repeat viewings. I love all the subliminal spirals that turn up right from the start in the sky, grass etc. Plus it's got a weird kind of naivety to it - one knows it isn't a stunningly well made movie and as such it ends up being oddly endearing. I love the end (and the DAI song, even if they sound like j-pop channelling the Deep Blue Somethines).
