Inventor unveils airbag jeans to protect motorcyclists in crashes

A designer of safety equipment for motorcyclists unveiled his latest invention: jeans fitted with airbags to prevent leg injuries in crashes.

Moses Shahrivar, who has been designing motorcycle safety jeans since partnering with Harley-Davidson Sweden 16 years ago, said his latest invention uses similar technology to airbag-equipped vests that are currently on the market for protecting a rider's chest, back and neck in a crash. ...

The jeans, which Shahrivar demonstrated in a YouTube video posted to the official account of his Mo'Cycle brand, are tethered to the rider's motorcycle, and when the tether is pulled airbags deploy up and down the wearer's legs to cushion an impact.

Only one prototype of the Airbag Inside Sweden AB jeans currently exists, but Shahrivar is in the process of getting the jeans certified to European Union health and safety standards and hopes to bring them to market in 2022.

Virginia dad invents spittle-free way to blow out birthday candles

A Virginia man said his free time during the COVID-19 pandemic allowed him time to work on an invention that coincidentally involved stopping germs -- a device that allows birthday candles to be blown out without spittle flying.

Mark Apelt, 44, a University of Virginia graduate and a current resident of Richmond, said he came up with the idea for the Blowzee birthday cake candle extinguisher while at a child's birthday party before the pandemic. ...

Apelt said he was chatting with other parents and they wondered whether there was a consumer product designed to stop birthday cake candle blowers from getting their saliva on the cake.

"I thought there had to be something, some device already on the market, but there really wasn't" ...

Apelt designed the Blowzee, which allows children to still use their own lungs to blow, but the air that travels over the cake doesn't come from their lungs.

"There's a little electric sensor in there, so when you blow into it, you're activating the sensor, and it switches on the fan, and that creates enough clean air flow to blow out the candle. Meanwhile, the air you blow circles around and comes back toward you," Apelt said.

Apelt said the Blowzee was such a hit with kids and parents at local birthday parties that he is now selling his invention online. ...

Where does the expelled air come out of the device?
The air that's blown into the mouthpiece is simply circulated back out in the direction of the user. As long as the user blows it triggers a sensor that activates a battery-powered propeller. It's the breeze from the propeller that extinguishes the candles.

Simpler and cheaper to fan the flames with a piece of card.

Aimee Fuller: Olympian tests 'flying surfboard' on Thames

Efoil surfing is one of the newest extreme sports, taking surfers above the waves on a motorised hydrofoil.

Two-time British Olympic snowboarder Aimee Fuller took to the River Thames to test one of the boards, which can reach speeds of up to 35mph.

“I think crazy and cool is the best way to describe it. It's like something from Back to the Future," she said.

In Milwaukee most of the buses (at least in my area) have little TVs in them, I think something like 4 per bus. Now, at the same time as selling a little ad space (trying to keep fares low), and apart from displaying nice trivia games which do help to pass the time, in the far left a column displays a list of stops and they get highlighted when the bus gets close.

Had to quote me old post here. Update: the company that installed the TV's went bust after a few short years (I think they were called "Transit TV" or something). The transit service had to pay to remove all the TV's installed. What a shame.

Hastings party company makes impression on social media with giant phallus bouncy castle

Hastings party firm The Madd Fun Company has had more than 800,000 views on social media of its newest bouncy castle, which features giant inflatable male genitalia.

Owner Dean Jamieson designed the castle over a few drinks two years ago.

“We’d get asked frequently what we have available for adults, for hens parties, or stag dos,” he said. ...

But Jamieson was terrified to advertise the bouncy castle because of the 3.25 metre high phalluses - so only advertised it on the company’s website. ...

It had been rented out about 13 times, but on Wednesday, he decided to post a photo of the bouncy castle on the company's Facebook page.

“We haven’t done any marketing for it specifically, because I haven’t really figured out how to market it,” he said.

But two days later the post been viewed more the 800,000 times and amassed more than 27,000 comments from people wanting to get their hands on the inflatable.

Jamieson has also been inundated with bookings and queries for the castle, with even people in Australia and as far away as Canada, wanting to have a bounce. ...

Franky has an accident.

The French inventor Franky Zapata has been injured after his homemade jetpack, called a flyboard, crashed into a lake in the town of Biscarrosse.

Mr Zapata was taking part in an exhibition event when he appeared to lose control of his invention and fell about 15 meters into Lake Biscarosse. He was taken to hospital and officials said he was recovering well.

The former jet-ski champion rose to fame after crossing the English channel on his device in 2019.

In video footage posted to social media, Mr Zapata can be seen rising in a spin onboard his invention, before seemingly losing control of the flyboard and spiralling into the lake.

How about a robotic "spider" night light to lead you to the bathroom at night?

Japanese Inventor Creates Creepy Spider Night Lamp, Freaks Out the Internet

A Japanese IT engineer has created a creepy nigh lamp that crawls on robotic spider legs and leads you to the toilet in the middle of the night.

Don’t you hate when you have to answer nature’s call in the middle of the night? ... Wouldn’t it be nice if a smart night lamp could light up the way from your bed to the toilet? Well, be careful what you wish for ... Case in point, this robotic spider lamp created by a Japanese IT engineer as a side project that has been freaking out Twitter for the past couple of days. ...

On June 5th, Twitter user Ianius shared a short clip featuring his newest wacky creation, a walking nightlamp powered by motorized robot spider legs. The lamp itself is commercially available, but the legs it stands on were created and assembled by Ianius, who sort of has a thing for robotics. ...

Here's a VR accessory designed to prevent your voice / speech being heard by people around you in the "real" environment.

Mutalk.jpg
Bizarre Muzzle Microphone Keeps Your Mouth in the Metaverse

Headphones with active noise cancelling are a useful way to tune out unwanted noises, but what if you instead wanted to silence unwanted sounds at the source? Say you’re on a sensitive phone call, or you’re unleashing a tirade of expletives while gaming? There’s a device for that too, although it doesn’t look quite as comfortable to wear as headphones.

Depending on how you spend your free time, the mutalk, from a company called Shiftall (which belongs to Panasonic), either looks like a miniature virtual reality headset or a sadomasochism accessory—but it’s neither. ...

Unlike VR headsets, which strap to the head and cover a user’s eyes, the mutalk straps to the head and sits over the user’s mouth. Inside the mutalk is a microphone and Bluetooth hardware which picks up the user’s voice and transmits it wirelessly to other devices like a smartphone or a gaming console. What differentiates it from other wireless microphones is that the mutalk traps and contains all of the sounds coming out of the user’s mouth, or at least most of them, as it’s promised to reduce the intensity of high-frequency sounds (voices) by about 30-decibels. ...

Although initially revealed earlier this year along with a handful of other accessories designed to improve VR experiences, the mutalk still isn’t officially available yet ...
