"(Hitler was a vegetarian) "

No he sodding well wasn't!

Whilst he occasionally avoided meat on his doctor's advice, the vegetarian myth was Nazi propaganda to depict Der Fuhrer as devoting himself entirely to matters of state and having no time for the pleasures of gourmet food.
According to witnesses though, he loved sausages, Bavarian game and his favourite dish was Leberklosse (meatballs made from beef liver).
The propaganda about his alleged vegetarianism was, however, eagerly latched onto by the Meat Marketing Board, in a rather shabby attempt to discredit vegetarianism.

I should just add that, the hiving off of these posts from another thread, makes it look like I started this discussion.
I would like to make it clear that I certainly did not wish to give this Nazi propaganda lie the air of publicity, but I did feel obliged to respond to a forumist who had trotted out this old myth.

Sadly, some people prefer to believe myths rather than facts (the same can be said for many Fortean topics here!), as the polarised reviews of the following book on Amazon amply demonstrate:

Both Hitler and Himmler were food faddists and hypochondriacs rather than committed to any particular food philosophy. Either or both of them may well have gone through periods of avoiding meat - if so they will have done it through advice from the various quack medical advisors they had.

It was Himmler that was the fanatical anti-smoker, or at least more so than Hitler.

I am a definite omnivore, possibly what you might in the current climate label an anti-vegetarian, but I certainly wouldn't associate genocide with diet.

What I saw was that he ate vegetarian for stomach problems occasionally.

Tbf that kind of makes Hitler an average vegetarian... survey shows 60% of vegetarians ate meat yesterday...
https://www.businessinsider.com/survey-60-of-self-proclaimed-vegetarians-ate-meat-yesterday-2013-6

"A poll conducted by CNN surveyed 10,000 Americans about their eating habits, and roughly 6% of the respondents self-identified as vegetarians. The researchers then asked individuals to describe their eating habits, and 60% of the "vegetarians" reported having eaten meat within the last 24 hours."

I do think that pretending that Hitler was some sort of monster is a huge mistake. He wasn't. He did and advocated and implemented monstrous things, but he was as human as you or I. Only if we understand relatively ordinary human beings with a 'cause' can do that sort of thing will we learn that we always have to be on our guard against those who want to be dictators over us.

Stalin the same.

Sad to say, you're probably right in a lot of cases. It doesn't take much to breed the monstrous in even the most even-tempered personality, and there are always those who will use that to their advantage.

Yes, although it is a difficult thing to express without someone somewhere choosing to misinterpret what you are saying. Hitler himself was "just another despot" and his personal behaviour was comparable to any other despot. He went to the toilet in the morning, he had a favourite food and there were things he didn't like to eat.

The atrocities of the Nazi regime were committed by thousands of ordinary people when society suddenly "gave them permission" to behave badly. The tortures, murders, rapes, and all of the horrors of the holocaust were not committed by one nutter in a bunker, or even on his personal orders, but were committed under his auspices by ordinary people.

If we forget that this potential for violence and hatred lies just beneath the surface of any 'civilised" society, we are doomed to repeat it.

As for "was Hitler a vegetarian?" the only thing we can say for certain is that he was not a vegan, because if he had been, he would have mentioned it.

I know ... of the myth about Hitler (whose biographer recorded his favourite foods as "Turtle soup, Pigeon and Bavarian Wurst") being vegetarian. This nonsense originated with the National Socialist Party wanting to give the impression that Der Führer was a noble Aryan ascetic who eschewed all carnal pleasures to devote himself entirely to the Third Reich. The propaganda was a godsend for those who promote meat consumption though and persists to this day to discredit vegetarianism and veganism.
I do believe he defereffered from alcohol with the rare exception of champagne and never smoked.

What about the theory that meth overuse in the population contributed? It was a very common drug in Germany at the time (and legal). Normal people on meth...

Hitler's private physical Theodor Gilbert Morell was responsible for treating hitler wit a cocktail of drugs. Speed (meth) to get going and to prepare for meeting. Sedative's so after all the meth and other concoctions so he could sleep. These were just 2 of the drugs Morell used to supposedly treat Hitler which in all likely hood just drove him further off the edge..
