don't really know if this is the right forum but i found quite a disterbing one at http://www.yahho.co.uk.
very obvious attempt to get traffic from yahoo.
it's changed from a list of problems wish 'liberal media' (or do those nazi's mean jews) to an out and out BNP advert.
any other websites that try and pick up traffic through a slight misspelling?

when we were doing a pitch for a company who make boats, as research one of our guys looked on http://www.thelondonboatshow.com (or something like that) only to find it was a website for an escort girl! BLATANTLY ripping off traffic for the London Boat Show!

EDIT!!! oops, just noticed that that web address still does go to the escort girl...erm...not sure of the legalities of that one...hehem...

she is merely offering the services of a secretary with beauty and obedience. she occasion misspells it sexretary so i don't think that'll be a good sign of her office temping skills:yeay:

hee hee

There's a company based in Oxford (whos name escapes me) who register domain names for the UK, and try to stop that sort of thing. I spent a day in their legal department once, and heard many stories about how cheeky (to put it mildly) websites sneek in registrations for names similar to existing companies, etc, or likely to be wanted by companies in the future. One or two in particular seem to make a decent living out of selling the names in the end.
But (typically) I fail to remember any of them.

I seem to remember that around the time of the general elections in the UK (1997) or maybe it was local elections - anyhow there was campaigning going down, and it was found that there were web addies similar to those of both labour the conservatives, pointing in the opposite directions.

I think it was Hague, there was a nudist who's site was williamhague.org or something like;)

probably would have got more votes if it was him:D

A friend was taking part in an adult computer class, when the tutor asked them to type in HOT BOT ,( a search engine I believe...)

However, my learned friend typed in HOT BOX by mistake!

It made for interesting reading!:D

I was trying to find a friend's site on the origins of Siamese cats and got lots of sites featuring 'Thai Pussies' :D

When I first got online, my bro. told me to go to hotmail to get an account there. I mis-heard and mis-spelt it and typed in hotmale.com.
LoL

How embarassing!!
LoL

A while ago I typed in http://www.ggogle.com and there USED to be a link there saying "how did I get here?" and the explanation saying "maybe you wanted to go to (google.com logo here), but you really typed in (ggogle.com in parody of google.com's logo)." Found it quite hilarious at the time...which could be explained by the fact that it was 2am.

It appears that the best way to find these pseudo-sites is to implement a Freudian slip!

By the way... A pal of mine who had a grievance with the Parcelforce company started a pseudo-site called "parcelfarce" (now sadly defuct due to threats of legal action) It provided a great forum for like-minded people with an axe to grind!

Funnily enough when I was at university we were given an assignment to look at the whitehouse's website and rate it for ease of navigation, how good it was etc and all that kind of HTML webpage thing. http://www.whitehouse.com was the address they gave us *laughs* well it amused us having to rate a porn site for University, lol

Re: www.whitehose [.gov|.com|.org]

I always found it somewhat irritating that the great unwashed masses are so ignorant of the domain naming scheme that they assume that http://www.whitehouse.COM would be the correct address for the US executive branch.

True, looking at the current administration and how it came into possession of the office, it seems reasonable that it would be a commercial site. But that's just wrong on general principle.

([*] I also find it irritating that the forum software assumes that I want http://www.whitehouse to be a URL, and automagically converts it for me!)

The company I work for makes, amongst other things, bikes with electric motors, they have a web site called http://www.estelle.de. Unfortunately, some would-be customers who tried to access the site keyed in http://www.estelle.com and reached the website of a very friendly, er, lady in France who wanted to sell her wares. A bike, of a very different type to the electric one! :eek!!!!:

I've just checked the estelle.com site and the address has now been taken over by a far more respectable lady in San Francisco who appears to be into painting.

Radio

I tried typing in http://www.msn.com once for some boring reason and ended up at the most excellent site http://www.smn.com which is of course Radio Free Maui!

Top cds this week includes the amazing Crazy Fingers and their album Legalize Happiness.

Only $15.99 on Audio CD, MP3 CD or CD-ROM, Your Choice!

Yep, it's a nasty little program that weasels its way in no matter how high your internet security settings are. Thankfully it's harmless (if annoying); the problem is if you're using IE5 or 6 the address bar will have remembered the URL, so until you realise the misspelling, each time you try to go to the properly-spelled site you'll keep going back to the pop-up page again and again...

hmm...tricky little bugger...

(not YOU! the pop up thang....)

I misspelled "canada.com" the other night and got "canda.com" which was...different.

(Infant Caskets? Ham Stuff?)

Very slightly off topic but my favourite site messes with your head. Go to Google then type in elgoog and hit the 'I'm feeling lucky' button and prepare to be baffled :D

Isn't that the site Chinese|esenihC websurfers were using to get through the State firewalls?

elgoog: tnemnrevog esenihc:
http://elgoog.rb-hosting.de/index.c...enihc+&ie=ISO-8859-1&hl=en&btnG=hcraeS+elgooG

Don't know about that , I just like trying to type stuff backwards :D

Looks like Yahoo have now claimed the original misspelt domain that started this thread. There's a redirection page there now.

anyone remember when the fortean times website was hijacked by a page that said "f*ck the US government" in big letters?

All I wanted was a nice picture of a thorougbred stallion from Google Image, to use , how can you go so wrong just typing in Stallion?
