Yup, when I worked in schools a lot of the staff believed that. I was in position to check and it didn't seem the case to me.
LOL It did to me - was first told it by my husband who did teacher training years before me, and later saw it in action for myself - but the worst thing that made them absolutely bonkers was when certain dinner ladies had them if it was a wet break lunchtime. We always knew when the ones who couldn't control them had had them even for just the half hour whatever it was. Would have to calm them right down but their nuts behaviour might last all afternoon. Wasn't true of all the dinner ladies just certain ones that were scared of them, I think. (no real need, it wasn't often the kids were armed...)

What I found when working in education/care/psychiatric/secure environments was that challenging behaviour was retrofitted to the weather or moon phase and given as an explanation after the event.

Happened to me on a relatively large & empty freeway a long time ago... Sunny day, very bright and white-ish concrete road. Suddenly: Dishwasher. In the middle of my lane (of 4), standing straight up, no obvious damage. I swerved to avoid it, thankfully.

Reddit solved my search for a lost website.
https://www.reddit.com/r/lostmedia/comments/rs5tql/lost_online_diary_only_one_fragment_left/

Enjoy the mysterious stories and experiences here:

This one is very good. I edited out some of the more saucy bits to focus attention on the coincidence and the use of Burroughsian magick:
  • The Guy In The Movie

In 1974-07 I received a brochure advertising an 8 mm porn movie. This was not unusual. I was active in gay lib and as a result was on all manner of junk mail lists. The movie featured a handsome, spectacularly well hung black guy. I showed the picture to my lover Jimmy L.. He too was quite turned on by the picture. I said, I am going away for a business trip in Calgary. If you get a chance to have sex with a well hung black guy while I am away, do it. ... When I got back, Jim said, I think you are going to be mad. I had sex a well hung black guy. Not only that, he is the guy in the movie. It turned out Jim was not pulling my leg. ... I was struck by the statistical impossibility of the co-incidence, not only a black guy but the black guy in the movie showing up literally on our doorstep.
  • Jim claimed he had created the event by taking LSD then focusing on Don’s picture. That sounded pretty far fetched, but Don showing up on our doorstep seemed even stranger. .... I suppose you could interpret this as answered prayer, by some god other than Yahweh, one not quite so prudish.
Was it an ad brochure or an "I know you're active in gay lib, hey this guy is going to be in town, I gave him your address" ? I'd suspect it was the latter.

It does have a rather suspect feel to it. Remembering the exact date of Reagan's inauguration is rather unlikely. (I probably wouldn't have noticed the difference between 1980s clothes and the present, and the cars wouldn't have looked that out of date to me either.)
Inauguration of presidents in USA are always on January 20th the year after election.

Just started in on this one and this grabbed my attention. How mundane but totally weird!

Many years ago when the DC were babies, their tiny socks would go missing in the washing machine - usually one of a pair. We were moving house 7 years later and I was doing one last load of laundry. When I was taking the wet clothes out of the machine, there were the missing baby socks! At first I thought they had gotten stuck somewhere in the machine for 7 years, then I remembered we got rid of the old washer and bought a new one the year before.

Working my way through the mumsnet thread and I've just found this:

"I was in holiday a number of years ago. Sitting outside people watching. A very distinctive man was sitting opposite. His face literally turned into pieces, all scaly reptile like and then changed into a completely different human face.

Nothing like this has ever happened to me before or after. It was so weird and I had such a horrible feeling that I grabbed my things and ran.

I think about it sometimes and try and think of a sensible explanation but I just can't explain it"

It sounds bit like Resident Alien, which funnily enough I googled before to find out whether there's going to be a second series (there is!)

This reminds me of a Reddit glitch case:

I can’t remember if it was the mumsnet or Reddit link but the UFO one that was ‘a police helicopter’ with no sound that there was no publicity about, was very interesting.
Yes it was the Mumsnet thread:

"
Not a glitch but a weird UFO one.
1990, the early morning before an A level exam, my mum came into my bedroom and woke me up really urgently telling me to come outside. I went down and most of the residents of our street were all staring up at this bright, spinning rugby ball-shaped thing in the sky above our houses. It was massive and covering half the houses. I completely crapped myself and ran back inside while they all just stood there open -mouthed for ages.
Next day, my mum told me a police man had knocked on our door at lunchtime to tell her not to worry about what we’d seen - it was a police helicopter exercise.
I have never seen an enormous, spinning police helicopter before. It was totally silent too.

It was the talk of the street - neighbours phoned our local radio station and one called the newspaper but there was never anything written about it. Not so much as a jokey mention of local yokels getting themselves confused with ‘copters and UFOs.

I have trawled the internet to see if anything has been written about it - can’t find one single mention.

Still intrigues me today."

Great find, do you have a link…?

Edit: found the link. Ant female members of this form members of Mumsnet? If so, could you ask for more information eg time/date…?

This reminds me of the Q-anon tale that reptilian beings from another planet have taken over Earth and the Democratic party, and are responsible for a secret cannibalistic pedophile ring. This is how it's been described to me anyway. I consider it Sci Fi posing as "what's really going on." Laughable except too many people actually believe it, or something like it.
Sincere first-hand accounts are accounts of memories of subjective experience, not objective reality.

Me again. Some Shining shit from that mumsnet thread ...
To be honest, so many kids look so VERY alike that I'd very much doubt anyone could even recognise themselves. I saw a picture on my mum's living room wall once, it was my son but wearing clothes I'd never seen before and in a place we'd never even been to.

It was his cousin, my brother's son, who, in photographs was a dead ringer for my eldest. Not in real life though, so we never really noticed until I saw that picture.

Yup, I have a photo of a family wedding group that includes me, a babe in arms, and my father who looks the IMAGE of Escet. If I drew specs and ginger hair on Dad it'd be Escet to the life. :)

We have mention elsewhere of striking family resemblances. I once saw my own face moving towards me and stared in shock. It was Escet.
I also kept seeing my own face from the corner of my eye at work. It was actually a snap of my cousin. I hadn't even noticed the photo until I became so puzzled I just had to track the image down.

Yes there's another one in that thread where the poster thought her brother had a photo of her and her sister on his fridge, but it turned out to be the brother's wife and *her* sister.

Someone is searching for this Reddit thread :) The question is probably better than the answer!

Open[TOMT] Reddit post about a floating head in the woods (self.tipofmytongue)
I just remembered a very good creepy reddit story I read a while ago, possibly on r/nosleep or r/creepyencounters about a ghostly floating head in the woods / in a tree. It's been bugging me since. I would love to find it again!

Enjoyable little read but doubtless completely fictitious, """actual""" Fortean phenomena are seldom so Horror film-esque.

I once gave my eldest a photo of my Grandmother and my mother at an early age.
When she took it home her girls wanted to know who the woman was with her in the photo.

Some of the posts on the 'glitch' mumsnet thread remind me of something that happened to me a few years ago.

I was standing near an open door in my parent's dining room. This led into the kitchen where my partner was standing, and we were probably only 1.5m apart from each other. I was going to pass a swizzel's double lolly to him and for some reason attempted to do an underarm throw, however I missed and so it bounced off him and we heard it hit the floor. We both looked on the floor and couldn't see it, however it was evening and the kitchen was dark so we turned the light on. Still no sign of it. I then started searching both the kitchen and dining room, literally a fingertip search and I still couldn't find it! This went on for about 10-15 mins and I was so puzzled, but I was determined to find it as I knew there had to be a logical explanation and we had both heard it hit the floor. I tried to determine possible trajectories and this led me to a tall floor to ceiling cupboard type unit next to where my partner had been standing. It was built into a gap, with kickboards between the unit, floor and skirting boards, and I discovered a small hole between the kickboard and wall which I'd never noticed before. I popped off the kickboard there it was, mystery solved!

The hole was just large enough for the lolly to fit through, however it required a certain angle and safe to say I could attempt to do that a thousand times and not manage it, it was just a fluke. Since that day I've always been a bit sceptical about missing objects. It's not to say there's no mystery, but I often wonder just how closely people have looked, and once kids and pets are in the mix bets are off imo.

True but in some polt-type cases objects go missing from open places - work surfaces, shelves etc and aren't dropped by the witness etc That doesn't preclude them falling and doing something akin to your lolly of course. In some of those cases they turn up in odd places, again, sometimes open places where they would have been found previously if they had been there the whole time.

Others go missing from closed spaces - cupboards, drawers etc

Mods - should this thread be titled "Weird Tales from Around the Web/Other Sites"? As although the majority come from reddit, by no means all do.

Yep, I do agree with you on that :nods: although I think kids and pets may explain some events. I'm yet to experience anything like you describe but I shall report it here if I ever do. (Also agree re. renaming the thread)

Mystery solved... or was it...? Given the unlikelihood of the lolly ending up in that hole then perhaps there was some external 'trickster' agent at work. hiding it in the one location that it would just fit and be hidden from view...?

The poster has added this, in answer to someone who asked if her mum remembered it. I'm guessing really early in the morning if it was still dark and everyone was still in bed (A levels are usually May and June aren't they?)

"She remembered it. My dad was out there too and he would mention it now and again but they seemed to be happy enough to accept it was a police helicopter as did the rest of our neighbours.

They are long gone so I can’t ask but it does sometimes play on my mind, especially in light of the released videos last year from The Pentagon. At that time police helicopters were not common so I suppose they did not have a reference point to compare.

When I said it covered half the street, it was easily longer than 10 semi-detached houses. It was spinning on a horizontal axis. The light had woken the street up - it was incredibly bright but not blinding. I was honestly petrified and still cannot believe they were all standing watching it for so long while I hunkered down in my bedroom ready for Armageddon
grin
. My mum said it just disappeared … just like that.

In hindsight, I wish I had stayed out longer."
