Weddings: Weird, Woes & Disasters

No one saw this coming
Rachel Hosie

It’s the moment in a wedding ceremony where everyone holds their breath: when the minister asks whether anyone has any objections as to why the couple should be wed.
On the majority of occasions though - in real life rather than rom-coms, anyway - no one says anything.

But that wasn’t the case for the wedding of Lancashire couple Mark Whiteley and Joanne Green though.
With 100 friends and family members assembled to watch them tie the knot, guests were left gobsmacked when a woman stood up to object, saying Whiteley and Green were already married.

It was a dramatic moment when, as the congregation gasped, the best man stormed over to the woman to have words.
Only then was it revealed that the people Whiteley and Green were married to were in fact each other, and the whole scene was one big stunt - they’d married in secret months earlier and hadn’t told anyone.

Whiteley is a theatre boss, and the officiant, objector and best man were all actors playing roles.

He and GP receptionist and nurse Green had had a shotgun wedding whilst on holiday in Nashville, Tennessee in March - they said their vows in the Rhinestone Wedding Chapel.
The objection scene was all rehearsed to distract their guests’ attention before a video of their legal wedding ceremony was played, revealing the truth.

“We didn’t set out to do anything different but once the seed was sown we had the recipe for an amazing (possibly terrible) day,” 50-year-old Whiteley told Rossendale Free Press.
“We hedged our bets that it would work out. We just wanted to do something a bit theatrical, we’ve got a flair for a drama. We were worried about people being upset because it’s extremely sneaky to have been married three months and not even told our children.

“We hadn’t worn rings until the ceremony and we thought that was really important. But it has taught us how important marriage is and how important the sharing of your love with your family and friends is, and it was amazing to exchange rings.”
After all had been revealed, Green and Whiteley went on to celebrate with their guests.

I know this lovely couple who married in a shark tank in 1999. Weird wedding, but a great traditional reception party :)

The ghost of a Haitian pirate proposed marriage to a Co. Louth woman after she told the spirit she was no longer content with casual sex.

A 45-year-old woman from Co. Louth married the ghost of an 18th-century Haitian pirate after the couple met when she felt his presence laying beside her in bed in 2014. Amanda Teague, from Drogheda, Co. Louth, traveled to international waters to marry her pirate partner Jack through the means of a medium after telling the spirit that she was no longer happy to just have casual sex.

Teague, who has five children from a previous marriage with a living man, believes she has found her “soulmate” in Jack, who was executed over 300 years ago for theft at sea. ...

At least this couple has a really good story to tell about how they got married ...

Couple weds in courthouse bathroom after mom falls ill
A New Jersey couple recently changed their wedding venue from a judge’s chambers to a courthouse bathroom after a relative had an asthma attack.

Brian and Maria Schulz were set to tie the knot on Jan. 2 when the groom’s mother had difficulty breathing. She was taken to a women’s room at the Monmouth County Courthouse, where sheriff’s officers administered oxygen and called EMT’s.

If they had postponed the wedding, they would have had to wait 45 days for a new marriage license. So one of the officers suggested holding the ceremony in the bathroom.

In a video posted on the sheriff’s office Facebook page, Judge Katie Gummer performed the ceremony. ...

The weirdness came after the wedding but was related to it.

A vindictive bride has been ordered to pay $115,000 ($89,000; £65,000) in damages after unleashing an online attack against a wedding photographer.

Canadian bride Emily Liao spent almost a year posting disparaging comments about the services provided by photography company Amara Wedding.

The judge found Ms Liao attacked the business owner's integrity "with all her might" and was motivated by malice.

Ms Liao was disappointed with the quality of her pre-wedding pictures.

She also said she felt that she had not been fairly treated.

British Columbia Supreme Court Justice Gordon Weatherill said in his 22 February ruling that she "failed to prove that her displeasure was justified".

He said there was "no coincidence" business for Amara Wedding began to suffer financially after Ms Liao launched her online campaign. The owners closed the business in January 2017.

The arrest prevented the wedding. Or did it?

PHOENIX — A woman photographed by police wearing what appeared to be a wedding dress during her arrest on a charge of impaired driving in southern Arizona is disputing police claims that she was taken into custody as she was headed to her wedding.

The image of Amber Young being put into a police cruiser late Monday morning while in handcuffs and wearing a white open-back full-length dress made its rounds on social media. The 32-year-old Young was arrested in Marana, 30 miles north of Tucson, after she became involved in a three-vehicle crash in which one person suffered minor injuries.

Attorney Michelle Behan said her client was arrested on her way to meet a friend for lunch, not to a wedding. She said Young isn't engaged and insisted she was wearing a sun dress, not a wedding gown.

Sgt. Chriswell Scott, a spokesman for Marana police, said body-camera video from the arrest shows Young telling officers that she was on her way to get married and confirming that she was wearing a wedding dress. Scott said Young even gave the time and location of the ceremony.

Hold on - the daughter got a harsher sentence than the mother!
That can't be right.
No she didn't, she got a longer probation period but that was presumably to match up with the probation period plus the two year jail sentence of the mother.

A seriously WTF case though..

And to think we laughed at Jeremy Irons!
I had to look that up.

In 2013, he caused controversy for an interview with the HuffPost, in which he said he “doesn’t have a strong feeling either way” on gay marriage but expressed fears that it could "debase" marital law, suggesting it could be manipulated to allow fathers to pass on their estates to their sons without being taxed, because he supposed incest laws would not apply to men.[43][44] He later clarified his comments, saying he was providing an example of a situation that could cause a "legal quagmire" under the laws that allow same-sex marriage, and that he had been misinterpreted. He added that some gay relationships are "healthier" than their straight counterparts.[45]He said in a BBC interview that he wished he’d “buttoned” his lip before asking if its legalization would see fathers marry sons.[46][47]

It was supposed to be the icing on the wedding cake - a majestic owl swooping in to deliver the all-important rings.

But fairytale nuptials ended with a best man set upon and floored - and guests erupting in laughter.

The scenes at Wrexham couple Jeni Arrowsmith and Mark Wood's wedding in Tarporley, Cheshire, were captured on camera and video.

"It was one of those moments I'll never forget," said wedding photographer Stacey Oliver.

She caught the moment the owl was released to fly to the waiting best man to retrieve the rings.

Bwahaha! :rollingw:

I want to defend the owl though - it didn't attack him, he held his arm out and the owl tried to fly to him, he whipped his arm away leaving the owl with nowhere to go.

That has the ring of truth about it. A bird on the hand is worth two rings on the floor.

Here's a new approach - being delivered before the officiator hanging from a motorcycle on a tightrope.

Vows in the air: German couple married in tightrope wedding

... A couple in eastern Germany have gotten married in a swing dangling from a motorcycle atop a tightrope, 14 meters (46 feet) above the ground.

The German news agency dpa reported that a pastor standing in a cage atop a fire service ladder presided over the wedding of Nicole Backhaus and Jens Knorr in the town of Stassfurt on Saturday. The couple exchanged rings in the air but, for safety’s sake, waited until they were back on the ground to kiss.

More than 3,000 people watched the wedding in the sky, which took place during a local festival.

The tightrope was stretched between the town wall and a tower, and the motorbike was ridden by Falko Traber, a member of a family of artists.

Makes your wedding an out of the world experience.

A Japanese company is offering newlyweds a novel way of showing that their love is eternal: by blasting wedding plaques with their names on into space.

According to the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper, the Warpspace start-up in the city of Tsukuba is working with Kibo, Japan's orbital science module, to launch wedding plaques from the International Space Station.

The company, which is largely staffed by faculty members from the University of Tsubuka, says that it will engrave couples' names, messages, and other information on titanium plaques, measuring some 16 millimetres by eight millimetres.
