As the Reverend Tony Hancock might have said, "The Church of England has believers all over the World! None in England, but all over the World!"

A Pint!!!! Thats nearly an armfull!

I will probably be converting many hancocks into sound files on my comp. Could probably be sent through email.

What about the goons?

"Kindly stop washing your overcoat in this fountain in trafalgar square, you might have at least waited until I finished my bath"
"Dont you have a bath where you are staying?"
"yes"
"Where are you staying?"
"Here!!"
"Why are you bathing in a fountain in Trafalgar Square?"
"..............do you like pidgeon pie?"

I love it!

As for God. His wife believes in him.

She believes that one day he will earn the bucks and look after the kids while she gets her hair done on thursday. Thats if he stops waching the fooball and drinking beer.

Re: I AM A CHRISTIAN ...

Exorcistate said:
The Light of the World for me is Jesus Christ and I am unashamedly one of His followers. I accept the divinity of Jesus Christ who lived as God made flesh and died for our sins upon the cross before being physically resurrected. I believe that by grace we are saved through faith as a gift of God; that Holy Scripture is God's revelation to man who is made in God's image but has gone his own way rather than God's, thus having a bias towards evil. Because of this predilection, man cannot know God except through Christ who died for our sins. Salvation is available to all who choose the way of God. And that way is by Jesus Christ alone.

How do you know all this?

If I only "knew" it, I would be a gnostic, a philisopher, or something other than what I am.

I experience it within my life and believe it with all my being. I have faith in what I feel, know and believe to be true.

But how can you state something like that with such affirmation then have to admit you dont 'know' it?

Knowledge is the domain of philosophy, not faith. Buddhism is a philosophy. Christianity, like Judaism and Islam, is a faith.

If you "knew" you would hardly need have any faith, would you?

Spot on.

But how can you put faith into one philosophy and not another? What guides you to Christianity. I know you'll probably say the holy spirit but then how come its mainly white westerners that are guided towards Christianity, while mainly arabic people put faith in Islam. An outsider may well point out that people tend to conform to what there peers do with regards to religion.

the divine right...

ah, the divine right to convert others. this is one of the things in school that pissed me off. they were always preaching to us to convince as many none-catholics as we could to save their souls from damnation. i asked questions the other kids weren't even aware of...like: "so is the Dalai Lhama going to hell?" and the teacher would unconvincinglay say "maybe, if God saw that it was exceptional enough, then maybe the Dalai Lhama would be let into heaven."

BULLOCKS! BULLOCKS! BULLOCKS!

i was also told that scientists go straight to hell.

thank God i wasn't arrogant and ignorant like my teachers were.

In this month's New Scientist , Professor Stephen Hawkin explains why scientifically there can be no God . I'll read the whole article at work tomorrow and report back!

Please do!

There was a TV documentary a while ago that suggested that the Prof had got religion and was a regular church-goer

- or did I misread it?

No, his ex is apparently a raging Jesus-Jockey, and presumably used to drag him to Church in an effort to convert him away from atheism and save him from The Lake of Fire.

So, it's revenge? How very human.

Well to be fair after spending large amounts of time with people like that I myself have found my self hoping that there isnt a god for the sakes of most of the people on this planet.

That aside I dont think revenge was a high priority for him. Hes a scientist, science and religion often conflict so its only logical that one would try and explain the other.

Scientist's are people too.

I think the existence of God is one of those numinous qualities of the universe which Kant said were intrinsically unprovable by scientific method. Still, I wish Professor Hawkins luck.

The article was in UFO mag , not New Scientist ( I read them both ) I have photocopied it - if anyone want me to copy it out here I will .

According to the poll (above) there are no Jewish or Hindu votes. Do Jews, or indeed Hindus, posts messages on this MB, and, if not, I wonder why?

Do the questions that arise on a forum such as this intrigue them less than others, or are they quietly contributing and do not wish to be counted?

Rabbi Moshe Yess used to post fairly regularly, but then other commitments took him elsewhere: he did say he may return. There are Jewish board members, and probably Hindus (out of 2,000 plus members, many of them UK based, law of averages would suggest so), but I imagine most members of any creed are here for more mainstream Fortean discussion rather than examination of their own particular religious beliefs: the overall theme of this thread is basically whether or not people believe in a supreme being/higher intelligence or whatever you wish to label it, and if so what they think the nature thereof may be.

Obviously individual belief systems would influence such impressions, so if any Jewish or Hindu members would like to contribute to how their faith views divine principles their input would be valued greatly.

Remember: this thread is about comparing how religions and individuals view "God", not a comparison of relative values or virtues of the religions themselves. All are regarded as of equal merit for the purpose of this thread. We must respect one another's personal beliefs, even if we do not share them.

So the results are in, and there are some interesting things you could take away from this relatively small cross-section of FTers:

Firstly, there’s a near 50/50 split between those who are agnostics or atheists, and those who have some kind of a belief system.

Of those who do have a belief system, less than half belong to any of the mainstream religions, choosing either paganism or to be just “spiritual” in some sense (or “other” religion). It would be interesting to know exactly what those who would describe themselves as “spiritual” but not religious believe – I guess some kind of very personal belief system which they’ve grown comfortable with.

I was personally quite surprised at the number of pagans who voted, coming in at near 10% of the total.

But the majority shareholders are the atheists – closely followed by the agnostics – which is surprising as I would have thought the agnostic viewpoint was more Fortean……?

But no Hindus and only one Satanist.

I was sad that the Satanist didn't 'come out' but then there was a furious reaction agenst their belief system on this thread so I'm not suprised.

If the unnamed Satanist wants to PM me then I would be happy to learn more about what they beleve, how they think and how it afects their day to day life and interaction with others.

Come on, PM me I'm honestly interested and noone need know your identity.

On the Agnostic/ Athiast debate: I have often wanted to be an agnostic as it's a far more flexable and groovy belief system than athiasim but alas I am positive that god does not exist. It's a bit like bisexuality: it would be far more groovy to be bisexual but I'm alas gay so I have to live with it. Oh well...

I'm actualy suprised that there are so few Christians but not suprised that there are so meny people who view themselfs as simply spiritual or pagan. I have always felt that there is a element of magic in Christianity (please don't damn me for saying that) and as such it would be tempting for the type of person who posts on this board. Perhaps it is indicitive of the free thinking nature of all you lovely forteans that you's getisened the religion than meny of yous where brought up with.

Perhaps I should start a thread to see how meny of yous have getisened the religion of your youth?

Now that's unfair James, there wasn't a reaction against Satanists. Only against the fact that most self proclaimed Satanists are just sad Goths and Vampire wannabies who want to rebel against a percieved authority figure and lack originality (as well as a sense of humour)...

I absolutely believe in me, that's why I don't have to believe in a god.

:hello: And if there are any Hindus reading this message board can I just say a very happy new year to you all....(A little early I know but I don't know if I'll be on tomorrow)

Just to back up for a minute (sorry; I know this was covered; flame me if you wish), but this relates to the discussion of "Is a non-practining Christian a Christian ?". I think the answer is yes. For example, lets take Jews. A jew is a jew for life. Regardless of wether they convert to another religion, regardless of wether they keep kosher, or follow Shabbos.
The point is, A person can hold a belief in g-d, or can hold a belief in the world, with feeling the need to broad-cast this to the world, or without all the "fuss" (for want of a better word) that goes with many an organised religion (rituals, can/can't do's, racist remarks, etc...).
A religion is a personal affair, and should be based upon an individual's understanding, and an individuals interpretation of the information or knowleadge they hold. If that person wishs to be Christen, so be it. If that person wishs to me Jewish, so be it. Pressing another's belief's or understanding onto somebody else is wrong. Questioning a person about their beliefs, with the focus on learning about the why's and what's of their beliefs is what matters. If people don't understand, that's when the intolorance thing comes in.

Does anyone here agree with me, or am I simply talking out of my arse, and re-typing what's already been typed ?

Right on Mr. Intestines!

I've banged this drum before and I'll bang it again: what right do we have to slander satanism and satanists and think we're clever. Your not, your just bigitoted.

[climbs down from high horse]

I'm wondering how many people on here think that I'm the satanist. Go on, admit it, some of you do.
