Who Killed The Electric Car?

Or you can pull out the headrest from one of the front seats and use its metal struts to smash a window.

The Fisker prestige EV company founded by Danish entrepreneur Henrik Fisker eight years ago, has gone bankrupt, leaving UK drivers with no support for their dangerously faulty electric cars.

Because we're heading off to France on Wednesday, we were a bit concerned about the French farmers blockading roads and possibly ports in protest at Macron's trade deal with South America. So I fired up the VPN to watch the French news just now. On France 2, after a report that was fairly sympathetic to the farmers and which told us which areas were the most affected (thankfully up until now primarily in the South of France), the second news story was about the collapse in sales of electric cars in France.
So, even though France's EV infrastructure is slightly more advanced than the UK's, French motorists seem also to be rejecting EVs, in favour of hybrids or second-hand petrol cars.

Ford to cut 800 UK jobs as electric car sales stall

The move is part of a major restructuring programme, which will see 4,000 posts closed across Europe as a whole.

The company said it had to act because of difficult trading conditions, including intense competition and weak demand for electric vehicles.

As Jaguar seemingly reluctantly hammers its ageing range into shape to face obligatory EV legislation, the once proud brand has come up with a cringeworthy arty-farty advert featuring no cars whatsoever and which will likely put off many prospective buyers:

Even the Guardian found it a bit too much and declared that it was so "inclusive" that people of all backgrounds won’t buy its cars any more!

Looks like the ruling council of a planet on a bad STNG episode.

Not all bald people look the same.

A study on the US indicates that it is possible to obtain large amounts of rare-earth metals from coal ashes. That might make battery production a bit easier.

That means mining and burning coal, which they're trying to stop.

Too overloaded. Unrestrained pets. Baby as airbag....Nope.

(Dont they have a lot of Li in Cornwall? And theres all those AAs Dad forgets to put in recycling?)

Shame we did away with the coal industry in favour of importing wood chips here in the UK.
Mind you, if things keep going the way they are, we’ll all be driving one of these

It’s better than the new Capri though
Rather than being set in the old Stone Age, I reckon The Flintstones, whose song refers to the modern Stone Age, were always meant to represent post-apocalyptic civilisation anyway. They even keep the tradition of celebrating Christmas for crying out loud!

As for the new all-electric Ford Crapi - sorry Capri, I definitely prefer the original:

The new Ford isn't as utterly ghastly as the new Citroën Ami EV though.

This charming old thing is a real Citroën Ami.

Whereas this is an abomination:

I'm with you on the capri but, pedant alert, isn't that the mk11 (The hatchback)? The Mk 1 had a small boot.

Also there was a consul capri.

Electric car targets could be eased as demand flags

Rules on electric vehicle (EV) sales could change as part of a "fast track" consultation from the government.

Carmakers with factories in the UK have been urging the government to alter the rules, which they say set sales targets too high, because EV demand is not strong enough.

EVs must make up 22% of a firm's car sales and 10% of their van sales this year. For every car sale that pushes it outside of that mandate, they must pay a £15,000 fine.

Manufacturers argue that demand for electric cars has not been as high as was expected when the rules were drawn up.

As a result, to avoid fines, they say they are having to discount new vehicles heavily, or subsidise rivals that build electric cars only, none of whom have a manufacturing base in the UK.

Sales of electric cars have been increasing. In October, they made up nearly one out of every four cars registered. However, industry sources insist this is largely down to unsustainable discounting.

... I didn't think you could stall an electric car...??

All the targets the government have put on car manufactures to sell x% of electric cars has failed because x% of the public don't want one.
They can't force the market to hit certain targets. The market determines what is to happen.

No, but they can manipulate the market. Such as raising taxes on fossil fuels to painful levels.

That's true, but the net effect would be a dead economy. Unless that is the primary objective behind all this nonsense.

Not going well, is it?

Revolt at Volkswagen: Electric car crisis spreads to Germany as it plans to close factories for the first time in its HISTORY and 66,000 workers go on strike

In addition to Wolfsburg and Hanover, which employs a further 14,000 staff, plants affected include Zwickau, VW's EV-only plant, where workers will strike today and tomorrow.

It is the first time the company has threatened to close factories in Germany in its 87-year history as European manufacturers battle foreign competition, high production costs and slow uptake of electric vehicles on the continent.

Sales of VW cars have plummeted in Europe as demand stalls and consumers return to petrol. Globally, sales in the first three months of the year dropped by three per cent as the sales of petrol motors rose by four per cent.

The industry has argued consumer appetite for electric vehicles is still too low.

A load of unsold electric cars can bankrupt a car manufacturer very easily.
Governments made them do this, governments should bail them out.
Unfortunately, we will all have to pay for this nonsense.

The car makers need to sell petrol cars (what people want) to fund the research of electric vehicles until they are good enough and cheap enough for people to WANT!

The electric car was a joke right from the start.

A few years back I was stuck in a 4 hour traffic jam on an icy freezing cold day on the M25 which is London's outer orbital ring road which is more often more like a car park. Chris Rhea wrote the song Road to Hell while stuck in a traffic jam on the M25.

I was fine. Over a half full tank and a diesel engine. I was nice and warm though very bored.

The traffic jam was in the middle of winter. After the obstruction had been cleared a further worse traffic jam was caused by electric cars with flat batteries. The batteries had gone flat due to the drivers having the heating on whilst stuck in the original traffic jam. I watched one electric car being dragged up onto the recovery vehicle. It's wheels wouldn't turn as there's no neutral gear. It took ages.

Electric cars are a complete joke for long journeys. For trips around town, I'm all for them.
