Witchdoctors

Another crackdown by police. But like many before it probably won;t end the killinfs.

Police in Tanzania have arrested 65 "witchdoctors", or traditional healers, in connection with the ritual killing of at least 10 children.

The children were killed in January and many had body parts removed. There is a belief among some people in Tanzania, and neighbouring countries, that using human body parts in rituals can bring wealth and good luck.

The inspector general of police, Simon Sirro, has ordered that every traditional healer obtain a licence. "We have also requested other institutions like religious leaders and politicians to help us," he added.

Ten children were murdered in the south-western Njombe region and an unknown number in the northern Simuyu region.

What's the difference between a witchdoctor and a fetish priest?

A witch doctor (aka witchdoctor; witch-doctor) is a healer who uses magical / shamanic practices toward alleviating physical / medical issues. In its earliest sense, witch doctor mainly denoted a person who "healed" someone suffering from a malign or negative magical influence. The label has evolved into a general term for any traditional (as opposed to scientific) healer. A witch doctor is not a maker of spells, though in the earlier sense he may heal by working to alleviate a spell that has medical consequences.

The term "fetish priest" is specific to West Africa, and it denotes someone who serves to mediate between certain spirits / gods and humans. A fetish priest worships and seeks benefit from the associated gods / spirits in a particular shrine location. These benefits may include interventions or spells. Healing is not the fetish priest's focus, and healing / medicine is not typically considered part of the fetish priest's job description.
