According to this familiar site:
http://www.randi.org/jr/101201.html
There really was a World Contact Day in the fifities, as celebrated in the song "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft", sung first by Klaatu, then made famous by The Carpenters.

Anyone know anything more? All the hits I get on Google are for the song.

And do you think it's about time the world was brought together to forget their differences and stage another World Contact Day? I don't even remember the seventies one, if it existed.

I can't find anything on a global world contact day either, but it's possible that a group of people got together in a field one night :D However, SETI started in 1959 so maybe what was it?

SETI is still going strong, and is more of an international operation now as as it's no longer run by NASA.

Jane.

I doubt there would be much interest in it. Back in the 1950's the concept of imminent alien contact was fresh and new. And although very few people really took it seriously, most of those that did seem to expect the aliens to be peaceful hippies from Venus, who would share the secrets of Utopia with us. (Check out the Giant Rock Convention for example.)

Nowadays most people are sick of hearing about aliens, and those who still take them seriously tend to believe that they're little grey rapists from Zeta Reticuli bent on world domination. Hardly the sort of beings you'd invite down for a barbecue.

Well, I'm shocked at your cynicism. Nah, you're probably right.

Sounds fun though! I'm all for meetings of cranks, weirdos and curious bystanders. If an alien, demon, or whatever decides to join the party so much the better! :D

Yes well, as long as they behave themselves they're welcome to a beer, and some salad.
:p

I thought they only ate cow rectum, the tongue and sometimes the eyes, basically what you can find in any burger from Macdonalds.

Does World UFO Day fit here or is it mentioned elsewhere?

As far as World Contact Day is concerned ...

As far as I know, World Contact Day is still observed.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Contact_Day

However, the World Contact Day website became defunct sometime soon after the 60th anniversary observance in 2013. The last version of the site can be accessed via the Wayback Machine:

https://web.archive.org/web/20140106022946/http://worldcontactday.com/

From that point onward the World Contact Day folks migrated over to Facebook as their primary platform. I don't know whether they're still active on Facebook.
