I thought it was excellent. I'm look forward to watching the animated prequel, Seoul Station.

Seoul Station was pretty good, not as good as the film it's a prequel to, but bleakly entertaining. Don't read too much about it beforehand, there's a big twist I noticed at least one reviewer giving away.

I'll track it down without reviews then.

Talking of Art House Apocalypse, (see Horror film thread), here's another one but with a zombie twist.

Here Alone

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4814760/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Here_Alone_(film)

A young women alone in the woods, struggles for survival. Why can't she just head to the nearest Burger King? Well it's because of the deadly human to zombie mutating virus that's why.

It's slow paced and focused on her battle with finding food and staying safe. The Z's are minimal but used well and there's a few frights. Predictably it's human involvement that screws things up, (but it wouldn't be a proper Z film without that would it?)

Lucy Walters, (Get Shorty), is excellent - Bear Grylls meets Ash Williams.

7 out of 10.

George Romero's Son has made RISE OF THE LIVING DEAD, a prequel to his Dad' seminal Night OF THE LIVING DEAD apparently...

View attachment 6957

.. so far this tots up to NIGHT, DAWN, DAY, SURVIVAL, DIARY, .. as well as LAND OF THE DEAD, the dreadful DAY remake, the not too bad at all DAWN remake, the even more dreadful CHILDREN OF THE LIVING DEAD that I wouldn't wish on my own worst enemy even if Tom Savini had a small part in it and RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, 1 to 5, number 1 being the best and great fun to watch, and now RISE .. have I missed any out? (Romero and Russo ones only please) ...

Robert Kurtzman's name is the only one I recognise in this below link, the K of KNB F/X, the N being Greg Nicotero the driving force behind THE WALKING DEAD so that's hopefully going to count for something ..

Why Return of the Living Dead? The series has no link to Romero and Russo's story was so reworked it has no resemblance to the original story, (I've not read it btw). The only thing used was his title. He was given a small screen credit, basically a finders fee for the project.

I think Fulci's Zombi 2 is probably closer to Romero's vision than Dan O' Bannon's.

I included Return of the Living Dead because Russo who worked with Romero on Night was behind it, Night of the Living Dead was also name checked in it in an early scene but yeah, the stories were wildly different after that .. it's been ages since I've watched Zombi 2 but I remember enjoying it.

edit: and please correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Return the first zombie to show zombies running btw? .. Danny Boyle sort of got away with doing the same thing in 28 Days Later because his hoard were 'infected', not zombies according to him, I remember the Dawn Of The Dead remake upset a few hardcore fans when that decided to include running zombies .. thee's nothing worse than a zombie with the runs ..

Yeah I think so. I can't think of any "living dead" that ran around before. Omega Man had its mutants. Race with the Devil had it's unkillable Satanists. Evil Dead?

I liked the remake of DoftD.

Cor! .. an Evil Dead fan would clip your ears for saying that there's any zombies in The Evil Dead, they get very touchy about that, it's been the subject of arguments ... according to them, it's deadites but I say they're all WRONG and they've seen Army of Darkness too many times, it's Kandarian demons .. which can make life awkward because I'm a mod on deadites online so I don't labour that point .. Omega Man was ace ..

Always thought it was the weakest of the original dead films. We will see what the remake is like.
It can't be any worse than that other Day Of The Dead remake, that was shockingly crap although not as crap as Children Of The Living Dead ... I'm a zombie film collector and I wont let that DVD into my house.

Day Of The Dead is on Horror Channel tonight.

Hi. I'm new.
Have this book. Fantastic read for any zombie fan, but really for anyone with basic survival interests!
Being a fan of zombie films doesn't matter, this is a basic, commence sense, disaster survival manual,
which is both thought provoking and entertaining.
Cheers,JonsG

Hi John, would that be The Zombie Survival Handbook or are you talking about a different one ?

I've been a zombie film fan since I saw Night Of The Living Dead when I was young. Seen a good one the other night Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead. It's very entertaining, Australian and certainly funny.

Finally watched Wyrmwood a brilliant low budget Aussie film that looks like it should have cost a hell of a lot more. Great cast and a script thats its the right balance of horror and humour. For a budget debut its amazing really. Looking forward to the tv series coming soon based on the film. 7.5 out of 10.

I've since learned that not everybody liked Return Of The Living Dead when it was released, I say 'since' because the internet wasn't a factor in the UK in '85 and everyone I knew who liked the same crap I liked loved it ... seriously .. punks breathing toxic fumes with zombie butterflies and half dogs still panting ... topless dancing ... tHe CRaMps on the soundtrack .. major MAJOR gore scenes, the film was great fun in the way that Allan Ormsby's earlier living dead film, Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things was, camp and over the top .. it was also the first running zombies film, I think that's what pissed off the Romero die hards at the time ? .. I owned an ex rental VHS tape of it that year and talked school teachers who were escorting us on a coach trip through London to put it on the (then novelty) VHS in coach player set up with TV screens running down the aisles ..

Nice reminiscence! I saw it on VHS too, but in the 90s, what most impressed me was the quirk that knocking the zombies' blocks off didn't kill them, their body parts remained reanimated no matter what you did to them. The Romero "shoot 'em in the head" idea caught on whereas that didn't. Might be worth exploring, future zombie movie makers?

I've always preferred shuffling zombies only because you'd be in a sort of quick sand scenario .. the fact that no matter how much you struggle and how fast you can run, there's no escape so it's a slower more frightening way to die ... and as cool as the first series of The Walking Dead was, when Rick road into that town on a horse, holed up in that abandoned tank and then the zombies ate his horse ? .. for some reason, that really pissed me off more than running zombies .. I almost cheered when 'Chips' the dog was able to smuggle food to Andy in the Dawn Of The Dead remake with the zombies ignoring him .. daft I know because why wouldn't zombies try to eat animals as well as humans ? .. zombies eating animals was a first on that level unless you count whatsherface who ate the bug on the tree in Night Of The Living Dead.

I think you're forgetting a certain shark vs zombie battle in Fulci's Zombie Flesh Eaters!

Shit .. I had forgotten that .... does the shark munch still count because it was Fulci and not Argento though? .. (yeah, probably) ..

.. so in that bit in Land Of The Dead, I reckon a few underwater zombies approaching Dennis Hopper might have grabbed a few fish ..

I've always found the shuffling zombies more believable than the fast-moving ones.
They're dead and they're rotting - of course they've got low energy levels and sluggish thinking processes.

I thought Romero seemed to change his mind when it came to Z's eating animals? Wasn't it in Survival of the Dead? (only seen it once and was a bit pissed and have no desire to see it again)

You might be right? .. I own it (and 'Diary') .. I've only watched the both of them once myself and I was probably also pissed ... I remember the one with the old Irish man at a farm being very boring ..

Quite agree. l do, however, find the fast-moving ones as in World War Z more terrifying.

Romero-type shambling groaners just seem like more of an annoying nuisance than a terrifying apocalypse.

The 'swarming ants' zombies in World War Z were so terrifying that humanity would have ended so quickly, there wouldn't have even been enough story line to make a film about it so I zoned out of the film on that level. If World War Z had been a 10 minute film then yeah, that would have worked .. the one thing I did like was our hero's choice of taping basic paper telephone directories around his arms, a brilliant self defence tactic that would work in any zombie invasion scenario ..

The flaw in that tactic would be the non-availability of such directories. The ones I've got are really thin. No good for zombie defence scenarios.

I'd imagine your average zombie would lunge at you for that bite attack, your instinct would be to raise your arms in self defence, the zombie's instincts (or what's left of them) would be to bite the nearest thing to them (your arms in this instance) and they wouldn't be able to puncture human flesh with their teeth through an even very thin telephone directory .. in fact, thinner would probably be better for a person wanting to be able to continue to use their arms in between attacks for other practical purposes.

I've always wondered why in zombie flicks no one ever wears some form of armor. Even long sleeves seem to be a rarity.
