Just a little bit terrifying...

Crust of Campi Flegrei volcano is weakening

9 June 2023
The Campi Flegrei volcano in southern Italy has become weaker and more prone to rupturing, according to a new study by researchers at UCL and Italy’s National Research Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV).

Lead author Professor Christopher Kilburn (UCL Earth Sciences) said: “Our new study confirms that Campi Flegrei is moving closer to rupture. However, this does not mean an eruption is guaranteed. The rupture may open a crack through the crust, but the magma still needs to be pushing up at the right location for an eruption to occur.

Looking at a map of the area, I am amazed and shocked that so much housing has been built right up to the edge of this volcano.
People there should start relocating right now, if they can.

If there is a bulk failure here, they would have to relocate pretty damn far. But as for general activity, it's been 400 years. People have really short memories.

They do that. they actually forgot where Pompeii and Herculaneum were or if they ever existed they were only found by accident and Herculaneum is mostly built upon mores the pity because there is whole swaths of the Town still to be excavated but probably never will be
